  5. The Waterloo police are all over social media saying how they have an orange squad car to spread awareness about truth and reconciliation. Truth is, I did not go to the event today because their presence disturbs me.

Last year, when I did go, the cops were the very first people thanked for being there. It felt like a gut punch. This is not ok. The police do not make me feel safe. They make me go into high-alert mode.

A few years ago, I stopped three Waterloo police officers from abusing a disabled woman. I heard screams for help and came running only to find them dragging her across the parking lot of the police station. She was not violent. She was not resisting. She was being assaulted. Her shirt was half off and her shoulder was dislocated. I didn't know what to do, but got out my phone to record. They let go of her as soon as they saw me with my phone. I stayed there until the woman got away. I made sure she was safe, and then I left, never turning my back on them.

The same year, an elder I know at Six Nations texted me in a panic because police were shooting at her and other Indigenous women with baton rounds.

Police presence at Indigenous events is not reconciliation. It is a threat dressed up as a photo op. It is a reminder of how police were integral to Indigenous children being stolen and placed in residential "schools."

"From the early 1800s through the mid-20th century, the U.S. Indian boarding school system sought to erase Native identity by forcibly removing children from their homes, languages, and cultures. Many endured neglect, abuse, and deep loss; thousands never made it back to their families. The generational trauma caused by these institutions continues to impact Native Nations today."

  25. What was beautiful is that our prayer gathering place and time coincided with an #OrangeShirtDay motorcycle ride and we had about 20 indigenous motorcycle riders join our circle of 20 church goers for reflection and sharing as we ended our gathering. And we prayed a blessing over their ride.

And to one-up this already unexpected addition to our humble prayer gathering - among us was also a national celebrity. Phyllis, a residential school survivor who started Orange Shirt day in 2013 joined our circle. An unexpected family situation brought her to Kamloops (instead of her planned Manitoba event) and she heard about the motorcycle ride and came to their pre-gathering.

So our prayer meeting was crashed by motorcycle riders, and then crashed by the woman who started this whole day of memorial.

Connections were made. #Reconciliation at work.

  27. Wearing orange today for #OrangeShirtDay but sitting out in the yellows, green, oranges of the willow and tall grass we are letting grow back and take over the spot of land we call home. It’s taking over the old settler fences, still visible. Let the land do what it wants to.

  28. "Forced child labour was not an accident of the system—it was its foundation. For over seventy-five years, Youville relied on the unpaid labour of Indigenous children. They scrubbed floors, hauled water, wrung laundry through heavy mangles, farmed, carried honey buckets, and cooked. [...] The work was also meant to teach obedience and enforce control."
