Our old movie theatre got a new paint job! It used to be a Paramount, then Landmark bought it when it was updated to digital and big seats, now this year it was sold to a local non-profit as a social enterprise.
Renamed the Savoy Theatre. Still hosts new movies. It was sold out for Spider-Man on Thursday! https://www.savoytheatrepa.ca

“Watts said there is still racism in the Alberni Valley, but seeing how many people gathered today help him know that the people with bad intentions are the vast minority.
"Port Alberni's a place with a heart and this is an event that really showed that today.””

If you don't have Hashilthsa in your regular list of news sites to paruse, you should. It's the oldest indigenous-led news source in Canada.
Here's another great article, this one about yesterday’s march to mark #truthandreconciliationday. Tseshaht and Hupacasath and other Nuuchanulth nations have been doing these walks in #PortAlberni since 2017.
So many people have been deeply affected by the former Alberni Indian Residential School which closed in 1973.
Port Alberni was at the forefront of bringing people involved in residential schools to justice as well:
"In his 1995 sentencing of a former Alberni dormitory supervisor, Justice Douglas Hogarth called the residential school system “nothing less than a form of institutionalized pedophilia.””

check that. I think there may have actually been over 1000 people walking. They are still coming into the hall and they stretch all the way down road still

The marchers are almost here.
Lots of birds around. A seagull making more awake than he should lol. A bald eagle. And a Raven watching us from across the river#portalberni #ReconciliationDay #EveryChildMatters #tseshaht #Hupacasath #nuuchanulth

enjoying the rivers edge while we wait for the march. It started up river about 2km from here at the former site of the Alberni Indian Residential School.
The area across the Somass/Tsu'amaas River is a large estuary. Huge salmon habitat (chinook, coho, sockeye). It was also the location of the first settlers to get here (both Spanish and British)

Walked from my house to about the halfway point of the full march waiting for them to arrive. This is Victoria Quay, the Welcoming Figures and the Whaling Sculpture.
These are at the foot of Johnston Road / Highway 4 in #portalberni at the Tsu'amaas (Somass) River.
It smells of the ocean, and the end of the salmon run which might sound unpleasant, but it's not. :)

The Federal NDP are on Vancouver Island strategizing for the upcoming Parliament.
Interim leader Davies:
""There's an ebb and flow to politics and I view it as an opportunity for our party to regenerate, to reimagine what a bold, progressive NDP looks like on the federal scene.””
I loved Jack Layton too, but I think it is time to leave Jack to the past. They really need to find someone who is here, in this moment, and can present a real vision for Canadians to strive for and achieve that is the opposite of what the Conservatives and Red-Tory Liberals are trying to do.

Victoria gallery showcases Tseshaht artist George Clutesi
''Clutesi, who rose to national and international recognition through his art and writing, including his participation in Expo 67, remains a towering figure in the history of Indigenous cultural expression in Canada. Yet his most profound legacy, Walsh says, may lie in the personal connections and inspiration he sparked in others.''

‘It’s part of me’: Tseshaht player looks to future in rugby in wake of Olympic silver medal

Super proud of a local member of Tseshaht First Nation winning a silver medal with Canada’s Rugby Sevens team! She was a last minute call up in the reserve, didn't get to play on the field, but every team sport has those players and they are just as deserving as anyone else! The team can't exist without them!
CONGRATS OLYMPIAN SHALAYA!

Bourque Bearskin & Victoria Dick of #Tseshaht are currently working on creating a #curriculum, “from the ground up”, called the #Indigenous #Graduate #Education & #Nursing #IGEN program for #UVic.
For Bourque Bearskin and Dick, the work they’ve been doing over the last few years, including the development of the #MastersProgram, is better aligning #healthcare with the principles of #UNDRIP.

I have a recurring annual calendar appointment for March 16. Today is the 102nd anniversary of Comox-Alberni MP A.W. Neill's first speech in his 21 year career in the House of Commons (1921-45) where he called for a "white British Columbia”.
Neill was a white supremacist, anti-Asian racist, and one of the loudest voices for Japanese Internment. He was also an Indian Agent dealing with First Nations and Residential Schools on Vancouver Island's West Coast.
In 2021 his name was removed from a local school but he remains honoured with a street name.
I will continue reminding people of this until that honour is removed.
(A full report about him starts on page 82 of the City of Port Alberni Agenda from January 23, 2017)

Someone at the local museum found this map today and sent it to me. It's from 1892 of Stamp Harbour in #PortAlberni near the very beginning of the settlement by colonialists in the area.
The mark that sticks out for me is “Remains of old Indian Vil.” (about 1/4 up the river in the top right). I believe this is what is properly known as “Nuupts’ ikapis” by the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations.
That entire area became industrial in the past century with a large Paper Mill that employed thousands in the 1970s. It exists today. Other sawmills, the railway and government docks took over the Dry Creek land. Which is hoped to be restored to its pre-colonial natural state.
It is called “Stamp" Harbour because Royal Navy Captain Stamp literally threatened the First Nations who also had a settlement at "Dry Creek" and he “Alberni Deep Water Wharf” with the cannons on his ship if they didn't move up river to allow the settlements to be built.
So they named the Harbour after him…

I'm really proud that our community, the entire community, is taking action and proposing solutions to the toxic drug crisis. I feel very grateful that we have Tseshaht First Nation leading us in many ways in this effort.

Every once in awhile I go back to this map of local First Nation names for places and landmarks just to remind myself that they were here long before settlers came and renamed everything. These are from the map created by Hupacasath First Nation. One of two Nations that inhabit this part of Vancouver Island.
