"The City of Burnsville’s sustainability pitch won first place at this year’s Childhood Obesity Prevention and #EnvironmentalSustainability Awards held by the United States Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.
"The $125,000 prize money set 'Grow Burnsville' into motion.
"'It’s just thrilling,' said Sue Bast, the city’s environmental specialist and sustainability coordinator.
"A 'food forest' planted at Civic Center Park this spring is one of Grow Burnsville’s pilot projects, Bast said.
"Once it’s matured, the food forest will be an open food resource to anyone looking for free access to fruits and other edible plants. Using the principals of #permaculture, no chemical #pesticides or #fertilizers will be used in maintaining the forest, according to Bast.
"David Woods, the conservation program director with Urban Roots, said Burnsville’s food forest is designed to be low-maintenance.
"The city enlisted #UrbanRoots, a St. Paul-based nonprofit, to help with the design and implementation of #GrowBurnsville initiatives.

Today is the 80th anniversary of operation Market Garden. Some 10 or 12 years ago a single elderly lady did a hell of a job to organize a commemoration in Kraków.

A new tool for the #marketgarden made mostly from workshop scraps: A wide #rake to mark drills for #sowing and #planting.
Originally, I wanted to use the metal rake in the first picture for this, but the angle of the pins was just not right.So I made one from two pieces of batten, a handle bought (as a hoe) from a discounter for 7€, some wood dowels and a bit of hose.
My beds are 80cm wide so the distance between the outer pins is 70cm. This way, I have 5cm to the edges on each side.
There is a total of nine pins. Depending on the number of pieces of hose I put on, I can mark up to nine rows on the bed in one go.
The bed has to be flat though, but here the metal rake comes handy.7€ and 1 1/4h work - I'm pretty chuffed.

But overall things are progressing nicely! We've streamlined our packing process for the vegetable boxes and expanded our platform to print labels that makes it easier to pack the customized boxes.
And the garden is producing better than ever! We currently have broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, onion, carrots, cabbage, Cavolo Nero, red russian kale, mizuna, cilantro, chard and lettuce.
Also getting permits to substantially increase our chicken headcount and working on permits for our field-to-bottle brewery.

I've been quiet here, but I can explain...
Last year we were lucky to buy a piece of land and old manor house near our farm. The place you see in my pictures is not our land, we have a lease.
So we were planning to expand to the second location, which is about 20 minutes away, while retaining the original place. Over the past few years we invested a lot of of time and money there, but in the end things worked out differently.One of the partners in the farm, whose land we were on, wanted to focus on other things so we decided it would be best to move the whole farm to the new location. On the one hand that means rebuilding all the basic infrastructure and a new market garden from scratch which means a lot of work and investment.
But on the other hand it'll be on our land and we can integrate all the lessons learned over the past 4 years, so that's exciting!Overall I'm very excited but also tired as you might imagine. Moving a farm is a lot of work... And we're not even halfway done. Luckily we have the lease on the original location for at least another year so we can maintain production while resetting.

They were queuing up at Wilmslow Community Market Gardens first ever stall at the town’s market last month! 🥕🍅🥦
Transition Wilmslow is working towards a ring of gardens around the town growing much of its fruit and veg, and this gave them a new outlet to get the fresh, local, organic food to people.
They also have a stall at their Oakenclough garden at a local children’s centre, and this month, they’re working with a local chef to run ‘plot to plate’ sessions with local families – harvesting straight from the allotment and cooking it up in tasty dishes on the day.
It’s funded by a Transition Together seed funding grant, made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
