  1. Making some new cleaning cloths from extremely well-used cotton jersey scraps that have already been part of at least two garments. This is the fabric’s last stop — when these cloths wear out, they go in the bin.

Method: Make a 23cm by 23cm pattern piece. Overlay scraps on each other to form a rough square that covers the entire pattern piece, and glue-baste to each other (not to the pattern piece!). Secure the overlaps on each side with zigzag stitching, then spray with water and press (or just press with steam) to make flat again (the jersey will have stretched out of shape during the sewing). Cut three pattern pieces for each cloth, and sew together along all edges, leaving a gap to turn through. Turn through, close the gap with hand or machine stitching, then topstitch around all edges. Optionally, topstitch a pleasing pattern across the now-turned-out square.

  2. I didn’t ask for this catalogue.
    I didn’t subscribe to it.
I even tried to unsubscribe - more than once.

Most of us just drop it straight into recycling, and then forget about it.

    Let’s stop normalizing silent waste.

  3. Made a post to share some green Canadian brands that I've been using for years! Specifically:

    🧼 Pure Soap Works soap*
    🦫 Green Beaver face cream
🪥 Nelson Naturals Crush & Brush zero waste toothpaste tablets
    🌾 Nature's Path cereals*
    🤗 Treehugger Cloth Pads

    * I highlight a few of my go-tos/favourites too!

  4. Experimental strip-piecing with the contents of my “too small even for patchwork squares” scrap box. The backing (not visible) is made from partly-cut-up polycotton pyjamas that had been sitting in a carrier bag in a friend’s house for more than 20 years.

Not sure what (if anything) I’m going to do with the neutral+neutral+colour pieces. If all else fails I’ll join them onto my unfinished-but-already-in-use gazebo curtain. The “purples” square is going to become part of a bag.

  5. I discovered a new low-waste shop in Mt. Airy along Germantown, from the list of shops in this article: phillymag.com/be-well-philly/r

It's called Perennial Refill Hub and it's in a tiny old schoolhouse from the 1740s. Their website: perennialrefillhub.com/

It's a bit smaller than some of the other options in the city, but it's much closer and more convenient for me :)

  6. Buying high quality footwear means needing high quality care for it.

In Guelph we are lucky to have a 20+ year old shop for shoe repair and maintenance.

Check out this great spotlight on Dimar Shoe Repair.

They do amazing work keeping my Blundstones looking brand new after years of wear!

I hope more people are coming back around to repairing things instead of throwing them out.

  8. @servelan This is something similar I do with utopified goals.

The goal is defined pretty high, so that it can't be reached directly, but the difference is, it is possible to reach it at some day.

A normal goal would be to go jogging for 8 minutes without a break. I utopify this goal and say 30 minutes without a break. If you're not fit, you will not be able to jog for 30 minutes directly, only if you are sporty you will reach this goal.

After following the utopified goal, you could jog for 10-15 minutes after a while, even if you didn't reach it. This is still better than the realistic goal (8 min), but it isn't a lie in terms of "You can't reach it ever!"

If I would say the utopified goal is to jog for 24 hours straight, the motivation would vaporize and many people might not even start to jog.

And this is why I think people don't start with #zerowaste at all, but if we would call it #lowwaste, people might be more interested to start with it, because it sounds more like an improvement and a reachable goal and not like a renunciation or they might think you have to live like a monk.

I would even say because it is imprecise to call it low waste, it is much better, because people would reach goals not even faster, but at all.

Reaching goals or milestones is really important to keep up the motivation and it is really good for your mind.

It could be even possible to get depression if you never reach a goal, which is dangerous.

  9. I saw a billboard for an intriguing new shop in my area so I went with my best bud to check it out.

They sell their own handmade soaps, lotions, lip balms, deodorant, bathbombs, and other body care stuff like that - all of which were in glass, aluminum, paperboard or other non-plastic packaging! They also sell some local-made jams, jellies, and art work and they resale products from some brands I already know and love like Enviroscent and Marley's Monsters. Best of all, they had a nice refill station for laundry soap, dish soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap. I've been yearning for a local place like this so I am so excited and I hope they thrive!

  10. I recommend checking out this video about #recycling, it's really good and has info I wish more people understood. If you like the video you may want to check out her channel to, sadly she is pretty liberal still politically but she has a lot of good info about #ZeroWaste / #LowWaste living, and the environment. I've learned a lot from her videos, and think y'all might too.

  11. I'm cutting up plant milk cartons to weave baskets out of them.
this is a lot of work actually, the weaving itself is fun, but the preparation is not!

  12. CW: food, veganism + low waste

I think I'll never be fully vegan, (I'm not even fully vegetarian) but I'd like to be predominantly vegan, with everything else = exception.

which is harder with my #lowWaste efforts because those tasty plant milks are all in those plastic layered drink cartons.

there used to be soy milk in glass bottles which were returned and refilled, back in die 90ies..

  13. CW: food, canning

ok so I boiled the beans, and it was quite a failure, because some are already falling apart now and others are still firm. So I couldn't can the beans anyway.

I'm making some baked beans with tomato for today and put the other beans in the freezer and use them in the coming weeks.

which is still pretty good #lowWaste praxis!

I also made a box to reduce the volume of my trashbin, so now I have a bin in a bin. I just don't produce so much waste any more.

  14. CW: low waste stuff, food

the next step in my #lowWaste "journey" is trying to make non-sugary preserved food myself.

I think it's so convenient to have canned beans or chickpeas, but when I don't want to waste the cans, I have to cook the beans myself and sterilize them in clean jars.

in german it's called "Einkochen" and I'm going to attempt it tomorrow.

  15. CW: low waste

today I learned that some people believe that "tetrapak" packages are made of cardboard. they aren't. here's a link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetra_Pa

it's a multi layered package, made of cardboard, plastic, and aluminium. its layers cannot be separated without a lot of processing, and nobody is going to put in so much work, and it doesn't pay off so it's actually
    - not plastic free
    - shitty for the environment
    - not recycleable despite what the manufacturer says

    #zerowaste #LowWaste

  16. CW: low waste

today we bought our first tetra pak since november, because it's a holiday here and we are out of milk and we got it at a "Späti" (berlin late shop that is open on sundays and holidays).

strange feeling! but it shows how far we've come :) #lowwaste (not #zerowaste )

  17. #lowWaste handcream update: I am using the "climb on" lotion bar very often and it has shrunk considerably.

I would still prefer the fluid handcreams, but they are all packaged in plastic. I'm trying to stick to this now. climb on is not cheap at all, but the scent is really nice. I'll make my own after this is used up..

  18. CW: food

I have got tasty Indian food and the guy at the restaurant filled it in my Tiffin box and was super nice about it. #lowWaste
