The problems with linear representations of things that have complex nonlinear feedback mechanisms.

Here is gold price as an example. It has a very complex relationship with the whole global economy, hence many effects that have exponential relationships (like inflation and nonlinear market trends) tend to show up in it.

Linear chart looks like a hockey stick, but logarithmic is more representative of the relative value of what you can actually buy with it.
