  1. Waiting in running gear at pedestrian lights near the city square, I noticed someone in running gear waiting on the other side. I was hefting an ironing board picked up on the way home. He held a bag of potting soil. Beside me, a young couple in wedding-guest finery carried a giant pack of toilet rolls. It struck me as a sign of a livable, walkable city. The things people casually have in their hands in the shadow of a cathedral show if a city is home to ordinary people.

  2. Hit me up, #urbanism #cycling, #liveableCities, #walking, #planning people - what are the best books I should read in my new role as #Lewisham executive member for #Environment, #Nature, #Transport & #Climate Action

Things in the vein of Charles Montgomery's Happy City or Janette Sadik-Khan's Street Fight

  3. There are so many cities in the United States that could do this! Largely what is lacking is the will to provide safe infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians. I lost one daughter, Robyn, and nearly the other, Rachel, three weeks later, both while they were bicycling. #LiveableCities

  4. Mopeds allowed for weekday commuting, but not at the weekend when it's a purely recreational space.

Cycling allowed, but not right here, please walk your bike through.

Every time I see a common-sense rule for using shared space, I’m reminded of how simple it can be. We can easily work with and around one other in our shared public spaces, once you take cars out of the equation.

  5. "By the Law of Jutland of 1241, you may fill your hat with whatever you can harvest.”

"Everyone looks better with a pocket full of apples.”

    “Pickle me.”

    "Now's the time!"

A lovely annual tradition. The Smag På Aarhus ('Taste Aarhus') campaign that literally signposts wild edibles around the city and invites us to pluck away.

  6. City hammocks always make me smile. Rare to get a photo of them, because there's always someone swinging in one. I notice more of them around the place these days, like these ones I passed in the docklands. Hammocks in busy mid-city green spaces for locals and passers-by - nice urban planning.

  7. The UrbanLifeCircles biodiversity initiative in Marselisborg forest. A council project that feels a bit magical. A bit ethereal. The light, the stumps, the silence, the sounds, the green.

  8. Closed shops as a sign of a healthy city. I like seeing the home-made ’we’re on holidays, back in a month’ signs on small businesses at this time of year. I take it as a sign that the city centre is truly mixed-use with room for one-person and family businesses. And with room for a local community of ordinary residents who just think ’ah, well I hope Inger has a nice holiday, my dry-cleaning can easily wait.’

  11. The lovely huts along the lively Aarhus Ø docklands promenade are an eclectic mix: cafés, galleries, a church hall, a holiday bedsit, offices. Every business that rents one from the council is required to keep the curtains open when the property is closed (for openness; to avoid a shut-down feeling in the area) and must host 10 free community activities a year (e.g. one held a pottery workshop). Fair play to the council for human-centred, radical policy thinking.

  12. A visitor from abroad was surprised to discover that you can borrow an electric cargo bike at the hardware store if you need to carry bulky stuff home.

The first two hours are free. After that, you pay 99 kr. (about €13) per hour. Another nice sign, I think, of the advantages of walkable, bikable cities.

  14. Babies left outside cafés to sleep peacefully in their prams in the fresh air while their parents are inside. Small businesses that leave their wares out on the street all night so people can use the honour system to pay digitally, then take what they want.

A visitor from abroad was surprised to see this way of living, especially mid-city, which has reminded me to be grateful to live in a country and a city where this is not surprising.

  15. My morning commute today. Except I need a better word than ‘commute’ for when you cycle or walk to work, so there’s time to enjoy the sunrise.

  16. Free public fitness equipment in local parks – simple, beneficial, nice.

There are 25 of these workout playgrounds in Aarhus now. Some are in big parks, some are in small customised urban spaces mid-city. I don’t know if this is an Aarhus thing or a Danish thing or a worldwide thing. I do know it’s a good thing, so I hope it’s common everywhere.
