  1. Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim.

The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below.

And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers...

It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds.

I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan.

    Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze!

So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...)

  2. Massively enjoyed the @Level1Techs DGX Spark GB10 review, in particular because of the showcase of how you actually use the Spark software platform; youtube.com/watch?v=Lqd2EuJwOuw #AI #Nvidia #Level1Techs

  3. I’ve been trying to clean up my desk cabling. I have an #LG 5k Ultrawide going to a #Level1Techs #DisplayPort 1.4 KVM which in turn plugs into a Mac mini and a #CalDigit TS4 dock for a MacBook Pro. TS4 sits on top of the KVM, so it only needs a very short cable. IN THEORY!

I’ve tried 3 brands of 6 1.5ft DP 2.1 cables and none of them work. Some will not provide any video despite the laptop seeing the monitor connected. Some give a few seconds of video before either blanking or giving static.

  4. What a time to be alive! Relatively painless #SRIOV with the latest opt-in kernel 6.17 for #Proxmox! There's slight wonkiness here and there with the #intel drivers (on the Windows side), but from what I can see in the #level1techs video and thread, they are working diligently. Right now it's just #homelab shenanigans, but this will be useful for the last 2 Windows use cases I have once it's a little smoother.

  5. ICYMI: #GamersNexus, in a video with #Level1Techs 's Wendell, has 'announced', ~3 days ago, that they will or intend to include #Linux in their #gaming/hardware performance benchmarks (in some capacity, at least) in the future. As it is, the distro they plan to be targeting seems to be #Bazzite.

Motivation behind this being Steve/GN's concern with
#Microsoft 's continuous enshittification of #Windows, such as the bullshit, spyware feature they've been pushing lately - Windows Recall. GN's hoping that benchmark coverage of Linux would help offer some 'value' and insight in terms of performance for those considering making the move, in addition to existing Linux users.

Any 'professional', 'outside' perspective, coverage of Linux will always be a positive thing, honestly. Apparently GN themselves have uncovered some (serious?) flaws in terms of benchmarking a Linux system using something like
#MangoHUD in the past, so, it'd be nice if they commit to benchmarking Linux going forward and maybe we'd get to see meaningful improvements to these tools and utilities that Windows users often take for granted. Maybe even see them shame 'industry players' like #NVIDIA too for any shortcomings of their drivers on Linux.

  6. I bring this up, as #GamersNexus & #Level1Techs started the conversation of transitioning out of the #Microsoft ecosystem, due to #Recall and wanted a baseline OS for not only Testing purposes, but for an audience that is primarily #Windows users that are connected to that ecosystem in one form or another. Is either #Bazzite or #CachyOS #Linux ready for prime time? What is your #distro of choice? Respond below.

  8. I don't always post on #Level1Techs forum, but when I do it's because I've become interested in #DataCooperative.

As I mention in this post, blind trust towards your hosting vendor is one thing, but how does one set up a #kubernetes cluster where the admin can't just access volumes and memory willy nilly.

Anyone know of an alternative? Is it even possible?

  9. In case you're, like me, always jamming out to the #Level1Techs intro music and wished there was a longer version of it: There is!

It's actually just a track from YouTube's music library for creators, and you can find it here:

  10. im moment würde ich definitiv keine #intel desktop #CPU der 13. und 14. generation verbauen, vorallem nicht für #gaming

  11. I permanently switched away from #intel CPUs back when I had a C2000 board self-destruct due to CPU degradation fault (*) - now 13900K/14900K CPUs are developing issues en masse. Intel has acknowledged the issue but has been unable to give proper explanation for it. So far these issues has mostly been raised by individual end users but it seems this is likely to change as it appears that large hosting companies using these CPUs are affected as well. #Level1Techs and #GamersNexus are hinting on the issue being far more widespread than initially believed and not a result of running the chips near or over the recommended power limits. 12. Absolutely brilliant how a trillion-dollar megacorp can't help but fuck up their own launch, by doing irrational things to their monopolistic operating system they have forced generations of people to depend on.
