Like imagine your good innocent and hardworking dad bought you a LG TV and assembled it in your room by himself when you were 10 years old back in 2016 as a monitor for your gaming rig, xbos, ps4/5, sometimes for watching Netflix and you still use it today connected to the net this whole entire time, literally half of your life is in LG datacenters. Eughh !
Even if they didn't do it back then, that's still gross.

LG has now "strongly denied recent claims that its smart TVs constantly log and upload data". However, no such claims were made by #GamersNexus - at least in the video I saw.
It seems that some people reporting and commenting on the video jumped to hasty conclusions. If you watch the video carefully, GN doesn't claim that the TVs would be recording or performing speech-to-text constantly. The recording only occurs when you prompt the device to do so (however, the device stays in this mode for a long while, it seems, and the microphone is super sensitive and capable of capturing audio from quite a distance away).
What likely confused people was the fact that the video also covered the topic of compromising the device and then using it for recording or surveillance. In this situation, the normal operation of the device is maliciously modified in order to use the device as a listening device. When this is successfully done, all restrictions or limitations are naturally bypassed. Apparently some of the LG TVs also have vulnerabilities that allow taking over the devices remotely, over the network. Notably LG didn't comment on the existence of such vulnerabilities.

If the microphone is "off," you have to be closer - but they can still do it.
It's all demonstrated in the documentary. They do this _on camera_.
So "don't plug it in hur hur" doesn't work. It only cuts out one node of _tens of millions_.
This isn't a problem that can be solved by being smarter than everyone else, because even if you _are_ smarter than everyone else, you're still smarter than _everyone else_, and _they're_ all plugging _their_ sets into the network. That is, after all, most likely _why_ they bought a smart TV. To do exactly that.
Like it or not, this requires _collective_ action.

I'm getting too many "hur hur hur don't plug it into the network" responses that miss the point.
That's fine for your set.
It's not fine for all the other tens of millions of sets around you, _which also listen to you_.
These sets spy on every network they can sense, wifi and LAN, including yours to one degree or another if you live next door. They build profiles and geolocate, even if you never owned one, even if you never shared a network with one.
And if you _did_ share a network with one of these sets, they have IDed every network device you have and started building profiles around them.

LG TVs watch, analyze, and report on what’s on your screen. They record and report on conversations in range of the microphone, even without a wake word (technically, after a false positive or after an unreasonable delay after the wake word, or 60 ft away across a building). They scan and report on other devices on your network, and other networks in your vicinity. And unplugging them from your network may not be enough to stop them.
LG does exactly what you’d expect with all that data, and more you may not have imagined yet if you haven’t watched enough Black Mirror episodes.

Oddly enough they’re not yet on the #Fediverse but #GamersNexus is doing an interesting series on the Data Dragnet and how technology you supposedly ‘bought’ is spying on you. Starting off with LG tvs, but supposedly none of the big brands are safe.
Perhaps some EU laws are preventing some of the worst transgressions to happen here, but my advise would be to treat your TV and possibly other consumer hardware as suspect.
