  3. My threading is terrible, sorry everyone! At least my hashtagging went okay. Here's the citation:

Bruno Latour, Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory,
Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2005, digital rpt 2023).

  4. Latour's "new paradigm" cont:

"Who would be silly enough to deduct from the total sum of action the influence of pointing something out? The more influence, the better."

  6. Latour's "new paradigm":

"the more attachments the better! Is this not the most common experience? You watch a painting; a friend of yours points out a feature you had not noticed; you are thus made to see something.

Who is seeing it? You, of course. And yet, wouldn’t you freely acknowledge that you would have not seen it without your friend. So who has seen the delicate feature? Is it you or your friend? The question is absurd."

  7. Latour:

"Interactions do not resemble a picnic where all the food is gathered on the spot by the participants, but rather a reception given by some unknown sponsors who have staged everything down to the last detail—even the place to sit might be already pre-inscribed by some attentive keeper."

  8. Latour:

"To add in a messy way to a messy account of a messy world does not seem like a very grandiose activity. But we are not after grandeur: the goal is to produce a science of the social uniquely suited to the specificity of the social."

I may be from a different discipline, but yes, yes, yes: adding in a messy way to a messy account of a messy world: that's the thing we do!

  9. And again with Latour:

"when I say ‘read’, it does not mean ‘understood’, ‘put to use’, ‘acknowledged’, but rather ‘perused’, ‘glanced at’, ‘alluded to’, ‘quoted’, ‘shelved somewhere in a pile’."

So says Latour, but to my mind, reading can be fleeting indeed, and yet that's not what ultimately satiates the reader's desire. Even academic prose deserves immersive reading -- understood, yes, and used with or without agreement. As here. Quod erat demonstrandum,,,

  10. More Latour-isms:

"Groups are not silent things, but rather the provisional product of a constant uproar made by the millions of contradictory voices about what is a group and who pertains to what."

  15. STABAT MATER – La Tour (one-shot)

    Yes to all that.

Until a few months ago I could search "audiobook" on youtube and find all sorts of strange / worthwhile / potboiler / trash / romance fiction. Read by humans!

That has all been diluted to homeopathic levels by genAI read books with genAI cover-art.

We get to see just how adaptable the human brain is?

No we won't cause when things snap there'll be no observers or community to listen.

  29. NOTAS SOBRE A TEORIA DO ATOR-REDE: ORDENAMENTO,

    ESTRATÉGIA, E HETEROGENEIDADE

    John Law

  31. Reading Latour can feel like sorting through ideas the way you deal with laundry fresh out of the tumble dryer, sorting things out, reuniting pairs of socks, finding the inevitable singletons, creating some semblance of order and accepting loose ends. It all comes out in the wash. ideophone.org/living-with-lato #latour

(thanks to @andreasliesenfeld for convincing me to give it a try — I was perhaps unduly prejudiced against French theorists and their writing)
