  1. Now we’re seeing Japan doing something incredibly stupid: pursuing xenophobic policies to sate nationalists, net-uyoku, and racists.

Prediction: the number of foreign workers will crater and cause economic harm. The worst measures will be walked back eventually when the business class realizes they would rather have workers

But incoming foreigners will only partially recover, because Japan’s economy will be even worse off than it would’ve been and trust has been damaged

  2. If you do it right, I may give you a pass in my anti-copyright rhetoric. Sue them.

  3. #JPpol : 27,000 people gathered in front of the National Diet on Friday, for demonstrating against the ruling party and the government which are in the process of enacting Nazis-like authoritarian laws. The rhythmic chant "Protect the Constitution!" is repeated in the video accompanying the article below.
Demonstrations were traditionally dominated by labor unions and middle-aged to older individuals, but citizens in their twenties to forties have increasingly become the driving force recently. Waving glow sticks is also a new style.

  5. #Japan 🇯🇵 finally got their first female PM! Unfortunately, I don’t like most of her far-right political views, such as opposition to same-sex marriage, desire to amend Japan’s pacifist constitution, support for anti-immigration policies, and downplaying of Japanese war crimes.

Since I am visiting Japan for the first time in over a decade, I am trying to read a bit more and catch up on news. I used to do it regularly many years ago, but most of the news sites went paywall so I stopped. I usually like to read the 社会ニュース society news rather than politics and business sections, but I broke that this week reading political news.

In any case it has been interesting to read about the recent political ambitions of Takaichi. She was all set to become the first woman prime minister as the current leader of the conservative/traditional 自民党 Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP). Today...
