If you are in OH, or know someone there, and voting tomorrow, share this with them:

via @bolts, a clear explanation of how the language for issue 1 is deliberately confusing: make your voice count!

  3. I know a few Ohioans and seen this topic come up. The Republican legislature is, intentionally, making this confusing, making it sound like voting No will protect citizens from gerrymandering, when voting Yes is what will actually protect citizens by having citizens control redistricting.

So, Ohio, vote YES on Issue 1.

  5. In Ohio, we are voting in unconstitutional districts because Republicans ignored our last two anti-gerrymandering amendments.

Yes on #Issue1 would put districts in the hands of citizens, not politicians.

But the GOP supermajority is lying in the ballot language, lying that the amendment “creates a new board required to gerrymander…” blatantly false. Shame on the GOP for cheating and lying to citizens.

  6. Weeks after #Ohio overwhelmingly voted to enshrine a right to #abortion in the state Constitution, abortion rights have secured another important win:
On Friday, the state Supreme Court dismissed a demand from the state to be able to enforce its six-week #ban, which has been blocked by an injunction from a lower court in Hamilton County since September 2022.

Explaining their decision to dismiss the state’s appeal, the state Supreme Court justices cited “a change in the law,” apparently referring to the successful abortion rights ballot measure, #Issue1.

  7. After Ohio Supreme Court dismisses anti-abortion arguments due to passage of #Issue1, anti-abortion groups work with Ohio lawmakers to unveil total abortion ban by using the equal protection provision in the US Constitution and new laws defining personhood· Some say it could work., esp with conservative makeup of state & federal Supreme Courts. #Issue1 #Ohio #OHPol #USPol wcpo.com/news/state/state-ohio

  8. It’s the latest development in the struggle over abortion rights between Ohio’s Republican-dominated legislature and the majority of the voters, who passed the amendment by a margin of 57% to 43%:

“To prevent mischief by pro-abortion courts with [the amendment], Ohio legislators will consider removing jurisdiction from the judiciary over this ambiguous ballot initiative,” said the mix of fairly new and veteran lawmakers who are all vice-chairs of various house committees. “The Ohio legislature alone will consider what, if any, modifications to make to existing laws based on public hearings and input from legal experts on both sides.”

The statement also contained unsubstantiated references to “foreign election interference” by billionaires before voters enshrined abortion rights in Ohio’s constitution.

Abortion rights advocates plan to ask the courts to repeal any remaining abortion bans and restrictions on the books in Ohio, including a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before abortion seekers can have the procedure and a ban on abortions after a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome

  11. I’m very proud of what #Ohio did yesterday: Not only did #Issue1 pass, giving constitutional protection for abortion and women’s rights, but voters overall rejected the radical book burners in local elections. My local picks went 8-0!

  12. Hey, ho, way to go, Ohio.
For real, no snark for a change from me. 👍

  13. "Issue 1’s approval (56-44) will undo a 2019 state law passed by Republicans that bans most abortions after fetal cardiac activity is detected, with no exceptions for rape and incest. That law, currently on hold because of court challenges, is one of roughly two dozen restrictions on abortion the Ohio Legislature has passed in recent years."

Any respect, &there was barely a thread, I had of either of you is gone for the deliberate lying you did in those TV commercials against #issue1, cementing Woman's reproductive healthcare into the #Ohio constitution, including choice on abortion, contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care and continuing a pregnancy

  16. #Ohio voters reject #Issue1, a #BallotMeasure that would have made it harder to change the Ohio Constitution. A higher than expected number of Ohio's registered voters cast ballots in this special August #election that was set by supermajority Republican state lawmakers who oppose abortion.

  17. Props to Progressive Action Fund for making the (NSFW and steamy) best political ad I've ever seen, "Republicans in your bedroom".

After overturning Roe in the Dobbs decision, many Republicans want to restrict reproductive rights even further — including birth control! I'm not exaggerating. In his concurrence with the Dobbs decision, Clearance Thomas wrote:

In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold [which ruled that the Constitution provides the right to contraception], Lawrence [which ruled that the Constitution provides a right to privacy in most private, consensual adult sexual activity, including between those of the same sex], and Obergefell [which ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution]. Because any substantive due process decision is “demonstrably erroneous,” we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents.

Ohio Republicans spent a ton of doner and taxpayer money to set up a special election on August 8th, just for one issue, hoping it would pass with low turnout. If it passes, it will raise the threshold for passing ballot issues from 50% to 60%, allowing a 40% minority to veto future ballot issues, such as a ballot issue to amend the Ohio constitution to protect reproductive rights. It would also remove one of the few remaining checks on a heavily gerrymandered statehouse.

If you know anyone in Ohio, make sure they know about the special election for Issue 1 on August 8th, and urge them to vote No.

Early in-person and absentee voting has started.

Election Day is Tuesday, August 8. Polls will be open from 6:30am until 7:30pm.
