  1. In Ohio, there seemed to be broad support for Issue 1
    – the proposal to create an independent redistricting commission.

The measure had the endorsement of the state’s major newspapers.

Supporters heavily outraised opponents by a nearly eight-to-one ratio.

The most prominent public figure behind the amendment was the recently retired chief justice of the Ohio supreme court, a Republican.

And in the weeks leading up to the election, 69% of voters said they opposed gerrymandering.

⚠️ But it was opponents of the measure who had the biggest advantage of all.

🔥In August, the Republican-controlled Ohio ballot board crafted extremely misleading language that voters would see when they read their ballots.

Even though the ballot measure would have barred drawing districts
“that favor one political party and disfavor others”,
👉 the board-approved wording told voters the panel would be
“required to gerrymander the boundaries of state legislative and congressional districts to favor the two largest political parties in the state of Ohio”.

The language was later upheld by the Republican-controlled Ohio supreme court.

💥Proponents of the amendment said the effort was a thinly veiled attempt to confuse voters
    – and it worked.

Voters told the radio station WOSU and the news site Bolts that they voted no on the amendment thinking they were casting a vote to outlaw gerrymandering.

Jen Miller, the executive director of the Ohio chapter of the League of Women Voters, said the ballot language was so misleading that she wasn’t sure one could even compare the failure of the amendment in the state to other measures that came up short.

“You could functionally argue that every person who voted on Issue 1 was voting to end gerrymandering.
But that the disinformation campaign of the opposition, as well as the shockingly false descriptions that voters saw on their ballots, is what made our reform lose,” she said.

“I am completely sure that this does not reflect the will of the voters in Ohio. Absent disinformation and terribly misleading ballot language, Issue 1 would have won.”

Matt Dole, a spokesperson for the campaign against the Ohio ballot measure, said that when the opposition campaign began polling, it looked like the measure was going to pass easily.
“It was ahead by leaps and bounds,” he said.

He pointed to the language written by the ballot board as a key reason why the measure failed.

“You have the ‘yes on 1’ side that had
‘ban gerrymandering’ on their yard signs, and the ‘no on 1’ side had
‘stop gerrymandering’ on their yard signs,” he said in an interview.

He added he didn’t think his campaign’s messaging was misleading because the term was somewhat subjective.

  8. @chrisgeidner

#Ohio here. It is disheartening the way the gerrymandered GOP treats us voters. From passing the no special elections, then having a special election to try to strip ballot issues from Ohioans, to now, dismissing the overwhelming will of the voters as it comes to #OhioIssue1 and #OhioIssue2. It's disgusting. #USpol #OhPol

These ads were some of the most misleading, fear mongering ads on TV

If religion is going to get into politics, such as overtly paying for tv ads and political PACs, etc, then it's time to stop with the charade of separation of church and state and #TaxTheChurch

  15. Dear people doing GOTV for Ohio Issue 1,

Early in-person voting in Ohio has been going on for a few weeks now. You have access to voter data on who voted and who has not yet voted.

Please stop wasting your valuable time and effort on people who have already voted.

  16. Remember to vote if you’re in #Ohio!

In-person 11/7, or vote early (check your county’s BOE website).

YES on ISSUE 1 protects abortion rights, in a very reasonable and widely popular way.

The gerrymandered extremist minority in power in Ohio knows that, and has been putting out massive disinformation about this amendment. They even changed the wording on both the ballot and the Ohio government website to LESS accurately describe the amendment.

    So… turnout will matter! #OhioIssue1

  17. These are the last words at the bottom of a 42-graph story abt anti-choice messaging in OH:

“Despite coaching the students under her to take a moderate view while out campaigning, she is not for legislative compromise.

“We still have a lot of work to be done. We will not stop fighting until #abortion is inaccessible everywhere,” she said.

  19. ohiocapitaljournal.com/briefs/ #LegalizeIt The Ohio Ballot Board unanimously voted Thursday to solidify the language for the proposed recreational marijuana law in the November election.

The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol is backing the ballot proposal to legalize & regulate cultivation, manufacturing, testing & the sale of marijuana to Ohioans 21 & up. It would also legalize home grow for Ohioans 21 & up with a limit of six plants per person & 12 plants per residence #ohioissue1

  20. Hey #Ohio. This guy, Frank LaRose, is a delusional MAGA Moron. Sharrod Brown has only been a part of the federal government since 1993. That’s 30 years. Not 50. No wonder LaRose supported #ohioissue1. He also thinks government should stay out of education but be smack in the middle of it. 🤦‍♂️ Typical Repub-I-Can’t.

  21. This week seems to be racking up political Ws, from Issue 1 being defeated in Ohio (which I did some phonebanking for), to a pro-trans ruling (also in Ohio), Trump potentially being indicted AGAIN, and VFX artists forming a union in Hollywood. If you like how any of that sounds or if you like Mario Kart Wii, come watch!

  22. The final result of Ohio Issue 1 continues the trend of urban areas leaning more progressive and rural areas leaning more conservative. Looking at the map I can easily imagine conservative provocateurs and grifters saying "Only a few counties voted No! There must be massive fraud in these big cities!", while knowing they are lying to their audience. MAGA supporters will nod and fume right along with them because they will agree with anything that fits what they want to hear.

A reminder to all: Land doesn't vote — people do.

I'm proud of Ohio for the first time in a long time.

  28. If you know anyone in Ohio, make sure they know that the special election for Issue 1 is today from 6:30am until 7:30pm, and urge them to vote No. If it passes, it will raise the threshold for passing ballot issues from 50% to 60%, allowing a 40% minority to veto ballot issues.

The GOP spent a ton of donor and taxpayer money to set up a special election, just for this one issue, hoping it will pass with low turnout, because it would remove one of the few remaining checks on a heavily gerrymandered statehouse.

  30. Props to Progressive Action Fund for making the (NSFW and steamy) best political ad I've ever seen, "Republicans in your bedroom".

After overturning Roe in the Dobbs decision, many Republicans want to restrict reproductive rights even further — including birth control! I'm not exaggerating. In his concurrence with the Dobbs decision, Clearance Thomas wrote:

In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold [which ruled that the Constitution provides the right to contraception], Lawrence [which ruled that the Constitution provides a right to privacy in most private, consensual adult sexual activity, including between those of the same sex], and Obergefell [which ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution]. Because any substantive due process decision is “demonstrably erroneous,” we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents.

Ohio Republicans spent a ton of doner and taxpayer money to set up a special election on August 8th, just for one issue, hoping it would pass with low turnout. If it passes, it will raise the threshold for passing ballot issues from 50% to 60%, allowing a 40% minority to veto future ballot issues, such as a ballot issue to amend the Ohio constitution to protect reproductive rights. It would also remove one of the few remaining checks on a heavily gerrymandered statehouse.
