On March 9th I’m helping launch AI Foundations for Educators, a 5-week online course that goes beyond workshop-level knowledge to guide teachers and school staff in developing a personalized framework for adapting classrooms to AI.
It’s a pilot module for a planned online certificate on generative AI; would count as credit toward that graduate credential. Open to anyone with a BA.

#Teaching Learners for the Long Tail of Time
https://tedcurran.net/2026/01/teaching-learners-for-the-long-tail-of-time/
I've long believed a teacher’s goal is not only to implant knowledge into learners’ brains, but to help them develop their own digital #secondbrain - an enduring repository of their best #learning to build on and refer back to over time. This post describes some projects I've built with this philosophy in mind. #pkm #instructionaldesign #elearning

Detailed research can sometimes be an impediment to classroom planning. Effective frameworks must find a balance: using language complex enough for scholars but clear enough for practitioners to guide instruction design. #InstructionalDesign #K12

Prof. Dr. Felix Schönbrodt (@nicebread), LMU Open Science Center’s Managing Director, joined a workshop on “Instructional Design”, held by Antje Manske at the Leibniz Institute for Psychology (@zpid.bsky.social).
Here were some of the key topics:
- ADDIE, a framework for instructional design that stands for these five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation.
- Agile Instructional Design, an iterative and learner-centered approach to creating materials that emphasize collaboration and continuous feedback.
- Bloom’s taxonomy, a framework that classifies observable knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, and abilities into categories of learning goals. These skills and themes will be applied to an agile course on Research Data Management 📊.
Workshops like this help us continuously improve how we teach Open Science and empower researchers through better learning design.

If teaching online results in faculty burnout… we’re doing it wrong.
Online Faculty Burnout isn’t about the modality, it’s about design, infrastructure, and support.
When institutions invest in instructional design(ers) & frameworks like #OSCQR, online teaching becomes sustainable, not exhausting.
💬 What supports make online teaching sustainable where you work?

Will AI in the classroom mean students asking ChatGPT for help with algebra homework, or strapping on a headband that streams their brainwaves to teachers and parents? In China, teachers are already policing attention with the latter

Roguelite Games and Motivation in Online Learning
I recently fell in love with #Returnal, a video game from a genre I never knew about -- #roguelikes -- and I was surprised by the powerful effects it had on my #motivation and persistence through its high difficulty and frequent failure experiences. Here I analyze what lessons #roguelites have for #elearning #instructionaldesign pros who want to make #onlinelearning more compelling.

Using your own voice and face in e-learning is brave. Nothing says 'professional training' like a 720p webcam and the emotional energy of a Zoom goodbye wave. | #AI #edtech #instructionaldesign 🚀

I’m just gonna say right now that whatever the benefits of #AI powered avatars and narrators in #elearning (speed of dev, low cost vs. using real humans, easier revisions) is not enough to overcome their persistent drawbacks (unnatural voice inflections, “uncanny valley” visual artifacts that look strangely unnatural). I would rather use my own voice and face (imperfect as they are) because I can control my tone and expressions in a way that’s natural and human-looking. #instructionaldesign 1/2

I recall high school teachers being described as "activity" teachers or "outcomes" teachers. The difference is whether instruction is teacher-centered or learner-centered. I still see these two approaches at odds in corporate #instructionaldesign. This post addresses the distinction.

@polygon has [a good series going this week](https://www.polygon.com/why-roguelikes-are-fun/) on #roguelike games. Unfortunately almost all the games they discuss are actually #roguelite games. 🤦
The dividing line between #roguelites and #roguelikes is fuzzy but real, and the fan bases for those two genres are two distinct groups that tend not to overlap as much as their names would imply.
I’m a new convert to the genre, working on a guide to integrating roguish elements in #instructionaldesign .

"I don't think AI can do your job (but I do think an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job)."

One example in #instructionaldesign is my idea of "pseudo-adaptive feedback".
https://tedcurran.net/2024/07/adaptive-and-pseudo-adaptive-lms-feedback/
Even though most #LMS systems offer #multiplechoice #quiz questions with #feedback fields, instructors don't go to the effort of writing detailed re-teaching feedback for each wrong answer choice.
An #AI can generate this feedback for you, dramatically raising the usefulness of MCQs as a self-directed diagnostic and study aid.
It's good pedagogy that *was* too much work, but now is not.
