I did it! I migrated my Home Assistant from Docker to bare metal (another Raspberry Pi 4).

The incredible part is that the ZigBee migration was perfectly seamless. Backup was restored, the dongle moved, and it was done.

The hard part was dealing with Matter and ESPHome, but after a little bit of sweat it was done.

Let's see what new possibilities that will open.

Jailbreaking an #Amazon Echo Show 5 Gen 2 and installing #LineageOS:

Looks like a lot of steps but it went totally fine. Now I have a cheap ($30 on Woot recently), albeit low resolution, dashboard display for #HomeAssistant.

The article here is a bit out of date; the bootloader stuff is included with the jailbreak so you don't need to do steps 7+. Also, the buttons for selecting boot modes have changed.

Ich habe ein E-Bike von Riese und Müller mit einem Bosch Motor. Mich hat immer gestört, dass es dabei nicht möglich ist, den Akku nur bis 80% aufzuladen und dann den Ladevorgang zu stoppen.
Mit Hilfe von Home Assistant und sogenannter künstlichen Intelligenz habe ich mir hier eine Lösung geschaffen, bei der ich in HA den aktuellen und den gewünschten Akkustand sowie die Akkukapazität eingeben kann, um das Laden dann mittels einer smarten Steckdose über die gemessene Leistung zu starten und zu beenden. Einen definierten Starttermin kann ich zudem auch planen. Das funktioniert erstaunlich gut.
Außerdem war es das erste Projekt, dass ich mit KI Unterstützung gemacht und es hat erstaunlich gut funktioniert. "Allein" hätte ich das nicht geschafft.

Für mich war zb neu, das #homeassistant mit Notifications und Location Tracking Probleme haben soll, wobei Notifications sich über #UnifiedPush mit zb #ntfy lösen lässt.

central thesis: in the current #enshittified timeline, every vendor is a hostile supplier & needs to be treated as such 😡
 
 
this applies to software vendors, sure, but also vendors of any physical product that includes a chip, firmware, or software [1] – which is increasingly almost all of them 😩

#Philips released v6.0.0 of their #iOS #Hue app on 2026-09-03. I have v5.73.0 installed on my primary device. as of today (2026-09-13), the latest release note that Philips have published for the iOS app is v5.70 from 2026-06-23 [2]

I expect that v6.0.0 is likely to have breaking changes, both because of the version number & because Philips (like pretty-much every commercial vendor these days) has a history of breaking or removing useful functions from their “smart” products

and despite the fact that there’s a toggle in the app for “automatic software updates” for the bridge & connected devices (a mix of firmware for the “smart” devices and software & firmware for the bridge) that theoretically lets you choose when (and whether) to update them, they also periodically force you to update all devices by holding your app hostage, preventing you from doing any actions in the app until you apply the firmware and / or software updates (like, you can’t change the brightness of a light until you’ve completed the hostage exchange)
 
 
I’ve long since moved to using #HomeAssistant as my primary UI for controlling our lights, including moving replacing all the automations I initially set up in the Hue app to HA – both because I want to minimise the impact when Hue inevitably removes or modifies features, but also because the Hue bridge (or app, or both) regularly craps itself when attempting to execute actions even though it still seems to be able to execute those actions when triggered via the API by HA ¯⧹(ツ)⧸¯

I’m working towards replacing the Hue bridge with a different Zigbee controller, but my spoons are finite & I really shouldn’t need to be the sysadmin of my own whole-arse tech stack to defend myself against the vendors who I’ve thrown a significant amount of dollarydoos at 😩 [4]

Switched my #homeassistant alarm setup from the AppDaemon/MQTT integration to the pure HA integration as a #qolsys remote device. Took about 10 minutes (mostly remapping automations and helpers), and now I have battery state for the PowerG sensors and one less panel login! Yay!

I'm having trouble finding an outdoor #Zigbee switch. I have an outlet in the car port that I want to use home assistant to automate the turning on and off of holiday lights based on sun position.

My thoughts now: get a short NM cord, pull the wires into a IP resistance rated outdoor project box, and put a zigbee relay inline, and wire a plug output.

Anyone had to through this together before? I can find the relays easy, but assessing project boxes on the net is hard

Letzte Woche habe ich mich dazu durchgerungen einen #HomeAssistant Green anzuschaffen, um die virtuelle Lösung vom Homeserver zu trennen - und Energie zu sparen. Heute erfolgte der Umzug im laufenden Betrieb - nach 30 Minuten läuft alles wie gewohnt weiter… 😄

Unser Keller ist leider 6 Stockwerke weiter unten, da geht kein WLAN hin, Kabel kann ich auch keins legen. Powerline würde wohl klappen, ist aber hungrig.

Also habe ich mich am #LoRa AddOn für Shelly probiert.

Die Datenrate ist sehr klein, aber es scheint zu funktionieren: Innerhalb ±4s sehe ich, ob Bewegung im Keller ist und ob das Licht eingeschaltet ist. Temperatur und Feuchte auch. Ich kann alles normal via #HomeAssistant steuern. Jetzt teste ich das 2 Wochen, bevor ich es fest verbaue.

Smart home is when you buy a smart relay so that you can turn your smart light on and off with the light switch without cutting the power to the smart light.

But now i have shelly to tell my homeassistant that i want to toggle the lights and if my HA does not confirm that it did it, then the shelly will toggle the relay instead.

These 10 input modules are a bit odd to be honest - my son (@HomeIsWhereTheSmartIs) wanted them and insisted they would be useful. I'm interested to see how he does. I think he has things like door contact sensors and all sorts planned, all on PoE, and linked to #homeassistant

But I think a better idea may be the same size, but 5 inputs and 5 solid state relay outputs instead.

I may do that later or tomorrow.
