#OTD in 1931, the Vietnam Communist Youth Union was founded, now the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. Several publications were begun within the union, and it fostered the reading of communist literature and engagement in revolutionary political activities, including armed warfare. The union continues to promote civic engagement, including the planting of millions of trees in 2023.

After two previous marches marked by assaults and other obstacles, civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., complete a 4-day 50-mile march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, under the protection of federally-mandated troops #OTD in 1965. These marches greatly increased the political pressure that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

The first teach-in occurred #OTD in 1965 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During the teach-in, movies, lectures, debates, and music were used to challenge the Vietnam War and its causes. The event faced conservative protests and 3 bomb threats, which forced participants outside into freezing weather, where they resolutely continued their activities.

Happy Birthday to Walter Rodney, who was born #OTD in Guyana in 1942! After becoming a professor in Jamaica, he was barred from the country for his communist views, a decision which caused riots in his support. He later taught and lectured around the world, especially in Tanzania. His book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” made him a towering figure in anti-colonial circles.

M. N. Roy was born #OTD in 1887. After arousing the suspicion of British authorities for his work in support of Indian independence, he sought refuge first in the US, and then in México, where he co-founded the first Communist Party outside of the USSR. After moving to the USSR to work with Lenin, Roy returned to India to help found the Communist Party there.

Fred Rogers, the creator and host of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood”, was born #OTD in 1928. Rogers realized early on that his greatest potential impact would likely be through television, a new technology at the time. Over the years, Rogers’ show helped provide consistency and guidance for countless children whose parents’ capacity to raise them was increasingly strained by capitalist demands.

Grace Llewellyn was born #OTD in 1964. After teaching at a private school for 2 years, and being fed up with traditional education, she wrote “The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education." The book was a cult success, and has inspired countless people to explore unschooling and learning at all life stages.

Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the US Civil Rights movement, was born #OTD in 1912. Because he was gay, he was often relegated to support roles, but he helped organize Freedom Rides and the March on Washington, among many other activities. However, later in life he also took up an anticommunist stance and supported Israel and US imperialism, which we feel shouldn’t escape scrutiny.

Today we’re uplifting the work of Dr. Connie Pinkerton-Uri, of Choctaw/Cherokee descent, who in 1974 released a paper showing that the US government sterilized thousands of Indigenous women through the 1970s without their informed consent. William Wells Brown was born into slavery #OTD in 1815. He managed to escape when he was roughly 19 years old, learned to read and write, and within 15 years of freedom was touring Europe and the US extolling abolition, as well as writing prolifically, including his memoir. He also worked on a steamboat on Lake Erie, with which he helped dozens of former slaves find freedom.

Today we’re celebrating the life of Micaela Bastidas, who in 1780 started an Inca uprising against the Spanish with her husband, Túpac Amaru II. One of her goals was to reestablish Indigenous women in social life and politics, which the Spanish had prevented. Among other roles, she was a key figure in supplying troops with the necessary money, food, clothing, and weapons.

The People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) was proclaimed in Grenada #OTD in 1979, led by the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement. This turned the country into the only communist state within the British Commonwealth. Under the PRG’s guidance, employment was greatly reduced, mothers were granted increased maternity leave, cooperatives were established, and many other measures were enacted.

Osama bin Laden was born #OTD in 1957. His 9/11 attack targeted the core of US imperialism; finance and military leadership; yet the US state was able to seduce a willing population into feeling personally attacked, leading to a cancerous and potentially terminal growth of the military industrial complex, which might ultimately fulfill bin Laden’s objectives.

Bobby Sands was born #OTD in 1954. After numerous instances of Protestant intimidation towards his Catholic Irish family in British-occupied Northern Ireland, Sands became a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). He was jailed for his activities but became internationally known for his hunger strike in response to jail conditions, and for being elected MP while jailed.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (aka Bangabandhu) addressed a crowd of over 2 million future Bangladeshis #OTD in 1971, calling for them to prepare for civil disobedience against West Pakistan as a result of that government’s failure to respect the population of East Pakistan. Bangabandhu went on to eventually become Bangladesh’s first (and only socialist) president.

The photo “Guerrillero Heroico,” showing an implacable Che Guevera, was captured by photographer Alberto Korda #OTD in 1960. The photo went on to become one of the most reproduced and repurposed photos in history. After Guevara’s murder in 1967, an enlarged poster of the photo hung behind Fidel Castro as he eulogized Guevara in front of a crowd of over a million people.
