Focus on these six disciplines to change behavior and drive down emissions. A required set of disciplines for everyone concerned about climate change. Are you having trouble with any of the six?

Many other countries must ramp up not just deployment but also manufacturing of these technologies for faster uptake while creating jobs and reducing risks of over-dependence.

A 4.2 TWh annual reduction concentrated in peak periods has disproportionate value for grid capacity planning: proposal would reduce electricity demand, contributing to the Clean Power 2030 mission by reducing pressure on grid
And saving land use.
At about 165 MWh/acre, 4.2 TWh represents about 25,500 acres of solar panels — comparable to the entire built-up area of Leicester or Coventry

At current electricity prices (~24.67p/kWh), that's roughly £1 billion per year in aggregate household savings — not a government benefit, but money staying in consumers' pockets.
4.2 TWh reduction translates to roughly 0.6–0.7 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. Against total UK emissions of 370–400 Mt, that's modest — about 0.17%
The value isn't purely in total kWh though. Dryers are typically run in the morning and evening — precisely when grid demand peaks

Additional context at national level:
Government's consultation document, published last July, provides basline figures:
17 million household tumble dryers in use in UK, consuming 8 TWh electricity per annum — roughly 9% of all domestic electricity consumption
If all 17 million were heat pump models, total consumption would fall to roughly 3.8 TWh — saving approximately 4.2 TWh per year
That's 4.5% of all domestic electricity use, or ~ 1.3% total UK electricity demand

However: government could pair mandate with means-tested £150 top-up for e.g. bottom quintile of households with dryer (perhaps 1.5–2 million eligible in any given replacement cycle)
That's £225–300 million total exposure, but:
1. *Spread over a decade of natural replacement cycles*, annual liability is modest
2. Comparing to aggregate energy savings accruing to those same households and *it likely pays for itself in reduced fuel poverty support costs*

For typical UK household doing laundry 3+ times/week, payback is probably in 2–3 year range — after which you're simply banking the saving. For occasional users, it stretches to 4–5 years, but even then well ahead over a 10+ year appliance lifetime.
But: £150 is non-trivial additional sum for large number (probably 2.7–3.6 million) of low-income households.
-> Example of the “Sam Vimes theory of socioeconomic unfairness“ — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boots_theory.

“Labour bans traditional tumble dryers to impose Brussels Net Zero madness on Britain”
Unsurprising Daily Express characterisation of what’s *in principle* actually good policy.
#HeatPump dryers are far more efficient than "traditional" (in UK, typically condenser) dryers, so save money over long term.
The *practical* problem for many is the additional up-front cost (about £150).
The government could probably itself save money by providing financial assistance…

The benefits of electrification compound…
The more a home electrifies the bigger the savings. Adding rooftop solar saves an Australian household $1,000s a year. Adding electric hot water saves $1,000s more. Adding a battery, an induction cooker, reverse cycle heating and removing gas saves $1,000s more. Adding an EV is the icing on the cake. Adding maintenance and servicing savings, total automotive savings can reach over $4,000 annually. If a household does this strategically, replacing old appliances as they wear out, the upfront […]https://envirocomms5.wordpress.com/2026/06/05/the-benefits-of-electrification-compound/

The increase in Energy use for cooling in the Summer will be largely compensated by the reduction in Energy use for #heating in the winter.

@BryanGreyson UK houses are built to retain heat not for cooling air flow :/ We need to start painting our roofs white and also more trees on the street will provide shade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dfCG2jAr50
Also heat pumps are an energy efficient way to do air conditioning, TechnologyConnections on youtube has a good video about those

It's all done. Benefits include much improved water pressure and hugely more efficient radiators. We have a bit of painting to do and the equipment needs boxing in but that's all just cosmetic.
Ironic to have it ready to go just in time for the heatwave 🌞
Octopus were great to deal with and the whole thing took just three days. Look out for a proper report on our website in coming weeks.

Ah, not all these Japanese fridge/freezer sized external domestic #HotWater units are #Heatpump #ASHP based - the “Ene Farm” with two massive units is #FuelCell based! See eg https://www.daigasgroup.com/en/rd/topic/1768549_56103.html

#Air-conditioning is always a #heatpump.
Usually they can run in heating mode.
So very efficient each way. That one room refuge or citadel is an idea I applied a while back, but it is also the #refuge against unusually cold days, losses of the usual heating mode, and failure of grid supplies. Doing that for the whole house is excessive, but one room is manageable.

Spotted a few upright fridge/feeezer size units outside houses in Japan but plumbed in, often next to the outdoor heatpump fan unit. They’re for hot water as I suspected, using CO2 as the refrigerant for high temps - the Eco Cute CO2 heatpumps (from multiple manufacturers) has sold over 10 million units in its first 24 years on sale!

Just to get to this point we had a suitability assessment for #CavityWallInsulation last autumn followed by the filling (see the blog post https://www.thepetflap.com/2025/12/16/cavity-wall-insulation/). Then we had the level of insulation assessed again and found suitable for a #HeatPump. We're lucky to be having it fitted so soon. All in it will have taken about six months to get it all done.

Our air source heat pump is being installed this coming week! At the moment our garage looks like this, as the kit is delivered a few days ahead of work starting.
As part of the installation we're having 10 radiators replaced as ours are very elderly and inefficient. This was identified during the survey.
So far we've cleared the area around our gas boiler to allow access. I'm fascinated to see what Day 1 brings.

@kennergf @clickhere @stancarey @helvick Battery as option, I'd say (for the moment, till battery prices come down). Please write to your local TDs and Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien asking for this! ☀️ Our best April yet! We're thrilled to share our solar generation report. Record April production (610 kWh!) covered 91% of our house usage and resulted in huge savings compared to the new price cap. The West/North facing panels are now coming more and more into play.
