Data Center in Denmark shows how to turn a cooling problem into a heating solution for thousands of households.

Water from the city’s district heating network is run through the data center’s cooling units, where it is warmed. The water then goes to a nearby plant full of heat pumps, which boosts the temperature before the water goes out to heat homes.

Here is the KEY to making this work. The tech involved is simple.

It's a split heat pump water heater, with the compressor outdoors. It uses #CO2 #refrigerant and therefore has a GWP of exactly 1.

Pros:
* Can use less indoor space, house is small
* Does not cool house in winter
* No need for resistance heat

Cons:
* Uses outdoor space, yard is also small
* More expensive, outdoor unit needs 240v
* Outdoor water lines could freeze
