  1. Hmmm - this data center pushes out a lot of heat. I wonder what it could be used for? How about heating homes!

Data Center in Denmark shows how to turn a cooling problem into a heating solution for thousands of households.

Water from the city’s district heating network is run through the data center’s cooling units, where it is warmed. The water then goes to a nearby plant full of heat pumps, which boosts the temperature before the water goes out to heat homes.

Here is the KEY to making this work. The tech involved is simple.

The hard part is having a pipe network already in the ground and being relatively close to the houses to be heated. scienceblog.com/m-a-data-cente

  7. Questions:

Do you have a heat pump water heater? I'm especially interested in either of these models (Geospring or Voltex X), of course, but they're relatively new and I assume not widely deployed yet. I'm curious to hear anyone's experience with a heat pump water heater, what went well or not. Has anyone seen these split heat pump water heaters (with outdoor compressors) in the wild?

How would you choose between these two models, aside from price? /🧵

  8. Second, A. O. Smith's Voltex X:

It's a split heat pump water heater, with the compressor outdoors. It uses #CO2 #refrigerant and therefore has a GWP of exactly 1.

    Pros:
    * Can use less indoor space, house is small
    * Does not cool house in winter
    * No need for resistance heat

    Cons:
    * Uses outdoor space, yard is also small
    * More expensive, outdoor unit needs 240v
    * Outdoor water lines could freeze

  10. Heat pumps, solar and wind could cut EU gas use by a quarter and blunt a next energy shock, a study finds.

Hitting EU targets for heat pumps, solar and wind could slash gas demand by roughly a quarter by 2030 — a saving twice the size of the LNG volumes Qatar could potentially supply to Europe by then, according to new analysis by the think-tank Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

  11. @dmoser Interesting PR campaign to discourage #heatpumps in UK. Home heating/cooling costs are borne by residents while UK government enables #gas promoted technologies including #hydrogen. Effect of #Brexit?

  12. It was always the #FossilFuel industry pushing for hydrogen even in places where it makes no sense. Now #DeSmog has the receipts.

"An intensive two-year #lobbying effort by a key #gas boiler industry organisation has been critical of #HeatPumps, and promoted #hydrogen for #HomeHeating to government and opposition parties, despite strong evidence of its unsuitability."

  13. "In states across the country, from Florida to Michigan to California, #HeatPumps reduce #emissions across their lifetime by up to 93 percent compared with gas furnaces.

Field tests carried out by the Electric Power Field Institute found that #VariableSpeed heat pumps were able to meet 100 percent of #HomeHeating needs in 0°F conditions."

And: heat pumps give home heating and cooling in one system.

  14. Fossil #gas people lobbying the #EU very hard for the opportunity to keep on making profits while contributing to the #ClimateCrisis

"Gas companies want to keep gas boilers in operation to protect their current market, and to enable them to adapt into what they see as potential new “green” gas markets, in #biofuels and #hydrogen, despite serious concerns over their viability."
