The problem is (apart from anything else, mentioned in the article), that #renewable #energy = renewable #electricity, & electricity is only 21% of global final energy #consumption (https://yearbook.enerdata.net/electricity/share-electricity-final-consumption.html), with 61.3% of that generated by "unabated #fossilfuels" as of 2021 (https://www.iea.org/fuels-and-technologies/electricity/). That situation will need to improve considerably, to say the least.

@TechCrunch I'd be curious how they've worked out the diminishing returns of a given bore hole.
For heating/cooling, geothermal is effectively unlimited b/c it recharges itself as the seasons turn over. In Summer it moves heat into rock to cool the home, in winter it removes heat for use.
Power generation is 100% one direction drawing out heat and rock doesn't transmit heat efficiently to replenish faster than it's pulled out.
One solution is drilling extra bore holes but that's the $$$ part of geothermal. If recharge happens over, say, 2 years of idle, you drill 3x the number of bore holes you need for your capacity. If it's 3 years to recharge you need 4x your capacity drilled, etc.

@agatesfrommexico Indeed so. The idea that #renewable #energy, & the #minerals that go with it, is environmentally & socially cost-free, is a complete nonsense. That said, #renewables are still vastly preferable to #fossilfuels & #nuclear - so we just have to find a way of making them compatible, somehow, with #social & #environmental #justice. Clearly, we MUST reduce energy #consumption & #waste.

If you ever have free or cheap electricity, that is the time to run a cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, etc) mining machine (an ASIC, a machine with lots of GPUs, etc). It doesn't need a fast Internet connection, and it can earn you a lot of easy money in mining fees.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — "The war in Iran is exposing the world’s reliance on fragile #FossilFuel routes, lending urgency to calls for hastening the shift to renewable energy.
Fighting has all but halted oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that carries about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, or LNG. The disruption has jolted energy markets, pushing up prices and straining import-dependent economies.
Asia, where most of the oil was headed, has been hit hardest, but the disruptions also are a strain for Europe, where policymakers are looking for ways to cut energy demand, and for Africa, which is bracing for rising fuel costs and inflation.
Unlike during previous oil shocks, renewable power is now competitive with fossil fuels in many places. More than 90% of new renewable power projects worldwide in 2024 were cheaper than fossil-fuel alternatives, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency."

#Transport for #London has appointed SSE Energy Solutions to develop #solar installations that will supply #renewable #electricity directly to the Tube via a private wire network. The scheme could generate up to 65,000MWh a year — around two-thirds of the Victoria line’s annual demand — cutting reliance on the National Grid and helping stabilise energy costs. The solar sites, likely to include ground-mounted arrays and rooftop panels near the network, could save more than 27,000 tonnes of carbon over 25 years. TfL, London’s largest electricity user, consumes about 1.6TWh annually and aims to run entirely on renewable electricity by 2030. The deal supports its wider energy purchasing strategy, including power purchase agreements, and forms part of efforts to #decarbonise operations, expand zero-emission #buses and improve #energy efficiency across the network.
