  1. I bought a broken early 80s Sony Betamax player off eBay to use as a #jellyfin server case after buying a little used Dell USFF machine to run it on I plan to hide inside. A Blu-Ray player will hide behind the cassette slot. This all started with a chance visit to #FreeGeek #Portland, the OG FreeGeek, who seem to have gotten a lot of these little Dell boxes, probably from a hospital. Already has Debian on it, just waiting for the case to come from some guy's basement.

  2. My first day volunteering at #FreeGeek, in the #RetroComputing section! Boy are those people nerdy. I'll fit right in

In related news: TIL that Compaq used to weld the CMOS batter on the motherboard. How strange

  7. @nixCraft well I'll just say that the default operating system installed on donated computers by #FreeGeek is Linux #Mint and they find homes for gazillions of them.

  10. well, word's gotten out, so i can spread it around

the board and management of Free Geek Twin Cities are deliberately ruining it

  11. UPDATE: This laptop has been claimed.

I offered it to a rather prominent Mastodon user who frequently posts #mutualaid requests but they didn't respond, so now I will offer it to you: I have a HP Spectre x360 convertible netbook which won't run Windows 11, but will run #Linux great. If you need it more than I do, it's yours, especially if you're in the #Portland area. I will ship it though if you're really in need and out of the area. If no one claims it it will eventually go to #FreeGeek.

  12. @goblingua @generationX @Cyclist @PCsfueralle In #Portland and I think #Minneapolis you can donate unused computers to #FreeGeek, who will find good homes for them.

  13. @arstechnica I used FreeDOS just a few years ago to update my Dell PC's firmware. So clutch! @freedosproject Awesome project.

  14. @synkr3tyk

Not that I know of. I've always wished there was something like #FreeGeek in central Indiana. I know a lot of geeks, self included, who would love to pitch in some skills to help people get access to low/no-cost refurbed electronics.

  15. Just sent a donation to my local Free Geek twin cities - a batch of BlueSCSI's for their vintage restorations!

  16. @Quinn9282 I visited a #FreeGeek in #Vancouver ages ago. I imagine it's still there. (not that this helps, I too wish there was one near me in #montreal ).

  17. Man, I wish there were more places like #FreeGeek in #Canada. It looks like such a cool place to go to, and I would totally consider volunteering there if one existed and wasn't located too far away from where I live.

(The only Free Geek location in Canada is in Toronto, and I live several hours away in the #YEG area. Unless I want to spend a bunch of money and hours on a flight + other accommodations in Toronto just to visit Free Geek, not worth it...)

  18. We filled out a build sheet for freegeek, for a Chromebook.
Windows 11 possible, but hard. @jaiden

  19. Got a pride shirt from Free Geek twin cities for being a volunteer:)

  20. Dear #Linux, If I'm installing a Linux distro on a laptop for the purpose of selling it on #ebay which Linux distro do you think would have the most interest? #Ubuntu because it's common? Mint? Or is the typical Linux buyer more likely to wipe and re-install anyway for good measure?

I checked a few recent Linux laptop sales, and they mostly had Linux Mint Cinnamon, sold by #FreeGeek Maybe I should follow their lead here.

  21. Doing some updates to a computer I got at #freegeek this thing rocks an i7 2600, a gt1030 (added after the fact) and 16 gigabytes of ram across two sticks with two slots open. On the software side of things it runs a Linux mint and I believe it’s the latest version!

  22. This is great news!

"Portland technology nonprofit Free Geek has landed a $2 million grant from Portland’s cable regulatory commission, a big one-time infusion that will boost the tech organization’s outreach mission in the Portland area."

  23. @[email protected] honestly, my only opinion is that reused laptops from your own family or a trusted provider (like #FreeGeek) are really great options for reducing spending and e-waste. Personally, no experience with Framework devices.

  24. @cosullivan
    >I learned that the #FreeGeek organization no longer operates in #Vancouver. I must find a reputable vendor of rehabbed laptops

@chaslinux Do you have any Vancouver contacts in your #ComputerRecycling network?
