  1. CW: Gut feeling

  3. Gluten sensitivity: It’s not actually about gluten
    unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/news/2

Lead researcher, University of Melbourne Associate Professor Jessica Biesiekierski, says there's a popular belief that most people with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity are reacting to gluten when it's far more likely they have a sensitivity to FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols). She also highlights the importance of the gut-brain axis.

Associate Professor Jason Tye-Din, Director of the Snow Centre for Immune Health and a gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said: "This review supports a more personalised, evidence-based approach to gut health and avoids unnecessary dietary restriction."

IMHO, it would be a more helpful and accurate representation of the article if whoever wrote the headline stated that gut sensitivity is not always about gluten. Putting aside my concern about clickbaitism, the article itself is excellent, and very much in line with my own reading/research and personal experience with food intolerance that leads to gastrointestinal problems.

  12. A conversation: someone describing all the ways in which #fibromyalgia changed their life, and someone else responding with a cheery "Have you tried giving up all #FODMAPs† yet?" My reply was as follows.

"A friend with fibromyalgia calls this the 'cucumber water' question, as in 'have you tried cucumber water?' Anyone with any #chronic #illness has most likely tried anything you're likely to suggest. Unless they ask you for ideas, sympathy and support are all you should offer."

That was as civil as I could possibly be, and probably more than they deserved. I think there's at least the *possibility* of getting through in this case, which is why I didn't immediately turn green and rip my shirt off.

But having observed in detail the effects of #fibro and other #chronic #diseases on the lives of people I love—

    NO. DO NOT.

†Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols ... one or more of which occur in most of the meals most people eat every day. But sure, you should just drastically limit your diet because some stranger on the internet says so.

  16. @caity @stufromoz except that i eat lots of foods high on the #fodmaps and don’t get indigestion from them 🤷🏻‍♀️

  19. @magslhalliday Ouch, that sounds like a tough constraint. I have never seen such a product (but I'm also not based in UK.) Out of curiosity, on which kinds of protein(s) was the product you mentioned based? Was it kind of non-soy, non-pea TVP?

I have one idea for the case that you want to go the DIY route: You probably know that sprouting reduces #FODMAPs in some pulses and beans, so maybe you could make some kind of sprouted (non-soy) tofu? (Which I'd assume would be much lower in FODMAPs than regular tofu)
