This #firstreadfriday we have a guest blog from Claire Walker at #univesityoflincoln on why our bodies cannot always tell the difference between parasite and food.
As someone whose body seems to get confused about why I would want to eat and enjoy all kinds of food, understanding more about intolerance and allergy is always so helpful.
Thank you Claire for writing this one.

"The test requires no involvement from doctors, dieticians, or holistic healers. It is never recommended by them ...
The test is an extreme elimination diet. In short, you eat only a very few things, ones that are unlikely to cause food intolerance, for a few weeks. If your chronic crud ends, you know that something you normally eat is the cause."

Perhaps this is a difference between the US and NZ health systems?

Sitting in Inclusive Eating in Palmy eating a lovely cheese scone along with a flat white. I asked about the name of the place and was told that it's about offering options for those who have to avoid certain ingredients. Their approach is that, no matter what #allergy or #foodintolerance someone might have, they'll have something that they can eat and enjoy safely (and even sit down with a diner to understand how they can accommodate their needs.

It's great to see an in-depth article that uses real science to call time on the pseudo-science peddled by intolerance testing companies to worried parents and others.
Well worth reading of you are considering getting tested for food allergies or intolerance. -

Gluten sensitivity: It’s not actually about gluten
https://www.unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/news/2025/october/gluten-sensitivity-its-not-actually-about-glutenLead researcher, University of Melbourne Associate Professor Jessica Biesiekierski, says there's a popular belief that most people with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity are reacting to gluten when it's far more likely they have a sensitivity to FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols). She also highlights the importance of the gut-brain axis.
Associate Professor Jason Tye-Din, Director of the Snow Centre for Immune Health and a gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said: "This review supports a more personalised, evidence-based approach to gut health and avoids unnecessary dietary restriction."
IMHO, it would be a more helpful and accurate representation of the article if whoever wrote the headline stated that gut sensitivity is not always about gluten. Putting aside my concern about clickbaitism, the article itself is excellent, and very much in line with my own reading/research and personal experience with food intolerance that leads to gastrointestinal problems.

I had the last slice earlier of an accidental/experimental loaf.
For some years I've noticed that bread but not other wheat products (pasta, pancakes, munker etc.) seems to cause my heart to pound uncomfortably and blood pressure to spike. But being so unmemorable (if I can put it like that), I occasionally make bread without salt, and I began to notice in the last year that this (rather than, e.g., no yeast) seemed not to have that association.

On my analysis, #Waitrose vend just 16 #ReadyMeals that are safe for me to eat, i.e. not containing known #allergens nor ingredients that would cause a flare of a #FoodIntolerance. Full spreadsheet included within the blog-post.

Found a great corn allergy resource by someone on Reddit who goes by 'CornAllergyLibrary'

Anyone with Celiac and/or allergies - have you found any food information apps useful (e.g., Spoonful, Find Me Gluten Free)?

One of the worst things about #FoodIntolerance and a restricted diet (for me, anyway) is trying to remember to consume enough oil.
It's pretty unsettling when your body's not able to sweat. :ablobsweats:

CW: personal medical stuff
Bleeding time also improved after giving up walnuts, and the mouth sores went away, too.
This article on 'hit & run' autoimmunity triggered by walnut antigen causing pemphigus vulgaris was interesting - though in my case, symptoms resolved w/ discontinuation, so I guess I'm lucky -
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jaci.2019.04.020But I miss walnuts. I wonder if pecans would be okay?

FOOD INTOLERANCES
Food Intolerances are caused by problems with the metabolic system which usually means there is an enzyme deficiency causing certain chemicals to build up in the body as they are not being processed, digested or removed properly.
If you want to read more about food intolerances this page cover histamine, sulphites, salicylates, lectins and lactose. We also look at FODMAP foods and Non Coeliac Gluten Intolerance.

I am cooking lunch, rice with mushrooms, and mackerel in tomato sauce.
We are out all day tomorrow for a #RepairCafe followed by delivering a training session. It means that there won't be any lunch I can eat so have to take my own.

I am tired and fed up and feeling low and miserable.
I am hoping it is just because I have had gluten free bread when I should really be avoiding the yeast in it.
-
Hmmm, now wondering if my food intolerances are adjusting the severity of their impact on me.
There was soya in the gluten and dairy free biscuits I was eating.
Along with the pains I also developed a bad tummy. That has now cleared and the aches are reduced.
