From a conversation with a friend on a recent Facebook post. A memory of a memory, #academic ghosts haunting the dusty rooms of my brain.
I once spent a very enjoyable afternoon in the #University of #Minnesota #Biostatistics department library reading through century-old bound volumes of #Biometrika, which is now a somewhat obscure #journal, but was in its day instrumental to the development of #statistics. All the great names were there—#Yule, #Pearson, #Fisher, et al.—and it was a clubby little world back then. Everybody who was anybody in statistics knew everybody else.
Just like today, they used a lot of space in their papers refuting each other’s papers. But the writing style was completely different, much more personal: many of the papers read more like conversations than the structured, pedantic language of modern journal articles in practically every field. “First I tried this, but it didn’t work, so next I …” “Like I said to so-and-so in a recent letter …” “According to whosit, such-and-such is true, but frankly, whosit is an idiot.”
Well, I recognized what they were doing: forming #cliques and having slow-motion #flamewars. Everything old is new again. Sometimes I wonder if we wouldn’t be better off stripping out the modern pretense of detachment.

Nie wiem na jakim poziomie zaawansowania jest Twa znajomść z Linuksem i jak mocny lub słaby masz sprzęt, na którym chcesz go używać.
Zasadniczo polecam „rodzinę” Debiana, chętniej jego „syna” Ubuntu, a najchętniej „wnuka”, czyli Linux Mint.Pierwsza, uniwersalna zasada dotycząca użytkowania wszystkich dystrybucji to adekwatna wydolność sprzętu.
Środowiska KDE Plasma, GNOME Shell i Cinnamon wymagają mocniejszej maszynerii. Nie ma sensu instalować którejkolwiek z dystrybucji z jedym z w/w środowisk na sprzęcie z minionej dekady, mając na nim do dyspozycji, np. tylko dwurdzeniowy procesor o mocy 2x1,5 GHz i (co z tego, że aż) 8 GB RAM-u oraz 500 GB HDD. Chyba, że tyko po, to by udowodnić, że: „To nie miało prawa się udać”. Niżej podpisana, z pełną świadomością popełnianego czynu wykonała taki zbrodniczy eksperyment informatyczny na laptopicy, na której pisze te słowa. Gdyby istniał Międzynarodowy Trybunał ds Zbrodni Przeciw Komputerom niechybnie stanęłabym przed jego obliczem. Otóż zainstalowałam na niej ni mniej, ni więcej, tylko Ubuntu Studio 22.04 obciążone nie dość, że KDE Plasma, to jeszcze sporą ilością programów do obróbki grafiki, muzyki i filmów. Oszczędzę Wam opisu przebiegu „agonalnego” działania sprzętu z takim „garbem”. Byłam zdumiona tym, że po zainstalowaniu czegoś „na skalę jej możliwości” w ramach odwetu za zadane jej tortury nie poraziła mnie prądem. To tak w ramach znajdowania jednej z przyczyn „bieszenia się” i „krowiastego” działania Ubuntu, na co narzekałeś @grzesiunio
Na bazie m.in. takich doświadczeń uważam, że wyjściowym środowiskaiem graficznym „uciągalnym” dla (prawie) każdego komputera jest Xfce, dostępne w (prawie wszystkich) dystrybucjach, czyli ograniczając sie do omawianego „poletka” – Linuksie Mincie i Debianie oraz Xubuntu. Na stare „słabizny” polecam LXQt, np. Lubuntu.

Zgadadzam się z Tobą. Uwaga dla nowicjuszek, nowicjuszy i „nowicjatu” niebinarnego – po zainstalowaniu „neonki”, aby była zdatna do użytkowania, należy doinstalować sobie np. LibreOffice i inne niezbędne programy, gdyż twórcy dostarczają jedynie lekki „szkielecik” do samodzielnego „obudowania” pożądanymi „narządami” i „tkankami”.@grzesiunio „jest jeszcze wersja debian edition z kde.”
Nie ma LMDE, czyli Linux Mint Debian Edition z KDE. Ta dystrybucja ma tylko Cinnamon, chyba że KDE doinstalujesz sobie „ręcznie” we własnym zakresie.

A coby wyjść poza plemienne wojny „Fedora czy Ubuntu?” osobom nawet mało zaawansowanym i nie „grzebiącym” w „bebechach” systemu za pomocą „zaklęć” rzucanych w otchłań terminala oraz dysponujących w miarę mocnym sprzętem (z min. czterordzeniowym lub choćby czterowątkowym procesorem na czele) polecam dwie dystrybucje przystępne i miłe dla oka swymi licznymi zestawami „szat” środowisk graficznych: Arch w wersji „dla ludzi”, czyli Manjaro https://manjaro.org/ i niezwiązany z głównymi „rodzinami” Linuksa (czyli Debianem lub Archem/Fedorą) „samotnik” Solus https://getsol.us/

In all cases, the #mostimportant thing I've learned over the years of managing a couple of large #online #communities is to resist the #temptation to get drawn into #flamewars and to instead remain #focused on the positive.
I may (or may not) agree with the opinions stated, but generally find it more positive to just let these die out rather than fanning the #flames in question. Because not much of it really mattered in the end.

Newbies mixing with old timers has always caused friction. Everyone has to be a little thick skinned while we learn, especially at inflection points.

What might have been lost from the Usenet days could described as a “productive innocence”. Sure, #FlameWars could get vicious and toxic behaviours were present (unacknowledged). It’s just that people behaved as though we assumed that the stakes of engaging were low given a level of homogeneity among actors. Hackers attack other hackers in a specific way.
