  2. Commercial dye most certainly works. The other sheet also has a cool pattern. The only problem now is I feel like sheets are too fancy for their original use, which was in the garden to cover up plants on cold nights 🤣 I feel like I should make them into something now. #dyeing #diy

  3. After rinsing and then a hand wash in a mild detergent. Tbd how much of this will stick after an actual machine wash. This is the wet color, could be much lighter dry. #dyeing #diy

  4. Also had another sheet, yellow. Threw that in just for fun. #dyeing #diy

  5. In went the pole wrapped polyester shirt, and the dye baby monster. #dyeing #diy

  11. Shirt on a stick. But, need to get some dye. Will do that later. #dyeing #diy

  12. Since I am here, going to toss some other stuff in the dye. I have a couple of garage sale sheets I was using to cover plants in winter. Let's dye those too! #dyeing #diy

  13. Soaked the shirt overnight in Simple Green, and making polyester shirt stew with soda ash. It's whiter than it has been in years 🤔#dyeing #diy

  14. Okay, looks like I'me going to attempt a Japanese "Arashi" pattern, lol. The dye company claims you can do this with polyester, with their polyster-specific dye.

  15. The dyeing didn’t work out well in the end. I was hoping for a nice soft terracotta colour and got something like raw spaghetti. Doesn’t matter though, it was fun trying. #nixos #spinning #dyeing

  16. I like weekends where my hobbies include: 1) things that are thousands of years old and 2) things from this century. 1) was trying to dye my handspun yarn with eucalyptus leaves and 2) setting up a really nice kitty terminal config on NixOS.

  17. The internet tells me that there is a book called “Natural dyes for education and colour experimentation”, targeting educational and artistic users, that can be downloaded (licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) and looks quite interesting:

  18. Washed some #wool and now I'm doing some #dyeing experiments in my new ServIT...

  19. When I started my experiments in dyeing with Procion MX, I didn’t realise there was a pure purple available (Violet MX-G, aka Violet 14). It’s a pretty decent purple on its own, but also combines very nicely with cobalt blue in low-water immersion.

Aside for non-dyers: the pure dyes are those whose colour comes from a single molecule, so they won’t split into different colours like the dyes that are made by mixing different pure dyes. Sometimes you want this (e.g. it makes it easier to get a flat colour with no variation), sometimes you don’t (split colours look nice).

  20. So the past few days, I've taken to wearing a blanket around my shoulders to be a bit warmer. It's a old army cream-coloured wool one, and I've just found a penannular brooch to pin it with instead of relying on a bulldog clip.
So now I'm wondering about refining the thing into an actual woollen cloak. Does anyone within boost range know about dying, making-fast, and/or waterproofing wool? Quantities for a 64x80in wool sheet?

  21. Got some #wool going in a mixed dye pot. Can't wait to see what colors come out! 😆🤪 #Dyeing

  22. The many uses of Broomcorn (Sorghum): "..In Nigeria, the pulverized red leaf-sheaths of sorghum have been used to dye leather, while in Algeria, sorghum has been used to dye wool. In India, the panicle stalks are used as bristles for brooms."

  27. Anyone in Lower Hutt/Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai in the market for natural dyestuffs? I've got a hoard of onion skins and walnut shells which are going free to a good home.

  28. Let's try tie-dying this sheet with cochineal. Will attempt a mutli-day dye process on this and see how much we can color we can get into the sheet. (Soaked already in tannins dried, treated with alum mordant, dried, and then random segments of fabric rubber banded together). #dyeing #cochineal

  29. Not being productive today, so decided to make more tannins and attempt to tie die one of the partially dyed bedsheets again with the rest of my cochineal sauce. I believe there is a lot more color available for absorption in the bath on the right, and tannins are going to be the key. #dyeing #redux

  30. Cochineal dye, batch 2. The primary differences with batch 2 was 1. VERY little tannins. My tannin bath was almost exhausted by batch#1. And 2. The first piece of fabric is poly/cotton blend. Poly will not dye without special (toxic) dyes. It did absorb enough in the cotton to turn pink, however. The second is the Shroud of Turin...err... the sheet of weird splotchy spots. I attribute this to the lack of tannins and no stirring of the fabric in that bath. I may reserve that sheet for another try. #dyeing #cochineal

  31. LOL the menswear guy might be getting echoes of my feed somewhere third hand.

(we just discussed this in approximately this form -- figuring out fabrics... ending in poop)

    #fabrics #sewing #dyeing #fashion #style

  32. Final wash of cochineal dyed cotton in extremely hot water, rinsed clean. This is the fabric wet. Will be close to the final color (will be lighter when it dries). But the cochineal definitely bonded to the fabric! From cochineal which colonized my cactus, with a bonus of using California sumac growing next to the cactus for tannins!! (Plus rusty nails I had in the shed, thrown in a glass jar). #dye #dyeing #backyard #garden #diy

  33. Batch#2 now drying. Batch#1 needs to be rinsed and hung, but apparently possibility of thunderstorms and sudden downbursts later... so just putting them in a container and will do that tomorrow when there is less chance they blow down the block while drying. (Update: fixed color on photo of batch#1) #dye #dyeing #fabrics

  34. Well, that's unexpected. The "brown sheet" I dyed is on the left; it turned into an orange color after the dye with cochineal. I am unsure if the existing yellowish dye reacted with the cochineal red to produce orange, or if there is less available space in the fibers to absorb colors because it was already dyed. The one on the right (the dark colored/red/purple one) was a white sheet. The colors are a bit more muted now that they are dry (no photo yet). But, all the little bits of cochineal are falling off as they dry, and not leaving any color marks. #dyeing #cochineal

  35. Batch 2. Wrapped the cochineal in some scrap fabric from the dog Hawaiian shirt I should have done it this way, like beer brewing. Still have random dead bugs floating in the water. I have my doubts that the cotton/poly blend sheet will absorb any color, it did not seem to absorb the tannins on the earlier step. #dye #dyeing

  36. Boiled for an hour. HOLEY SHEET, it worked! (Actually not any holes in these sheets). Now to dry, then apparently you wash it and see how much color actually stays in there. I guess I will do that outside so no one gets pink colored clothing on the next load, LOL. #dye #dyeing #fabric #cochineal

  37. Your meme about dyeing (fabric) for the morning, via the Barbie movie. (which apparently is a plot point in that movie...) 🤪 #dyeing #fabric #cochineal
