  3. The many uses of Broomcorn (Sorghum): "..In Nigeria, the pulverized red leaf-sheaths of sorghum have been used to dye leather, while in Algeria, sorghum has been used to dye wool. In India, the panicle stalks are used as bristles for brooms."

  8. Anyone in Lower Hutt/Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai in the market for natural dyestuffs? I've got a hoard of onion skins and walnut shells which are going free to a good home.

  9. Final wash of cochineal dyed cotton in extremely hot water, rinsed clean. This is the fabric wet. Will be close to the final color (will be lighter when it dries). But the cochineal definitely bonded to the fabric! From cochineal which colonized my cactus, with a bonus of using California sumac growing next to the cactus for tannins!! (Plus rusty nails I had in the shed, thrown in a glass jar). #dye #dyeing #backyard #garden #diy

  10. Batch#2 now drying. Batch#1 needs to be rinsed and hung, but apparently possibility of thunderstorms and sudden downbursts later... so just putting them in a container and will do that tomorrow when there is less chance they blow down the block while drying. (Update: fixed color on photo of batch#1) #dye #dyeing #fabrics

  11. Batch 2. Wrapped the cochineal in some scrap fabric from the dog Hawaiian shirt I should have done it this way, like beer brewing. Still have random dead bugs floating in the water. I have my doubts that the cotton/poly blend sheet will absorb any color, it did not seem to absorb the tannins on the earlier step. #dye #dyeing

  12. Boiled for an hour. HOLEY SHEET, it worked! (Actually not any holes in these sheets). Now to dry, then apparently you wash it and see how much color actually stays in there. I guess I will do that outside so no one gets pink colored clothing on the next load, LOL. #dye #dyeing #fabric #cochineal

  13. Mmmmm garage sale cotton sheet and a brick stew, my favorite. Way overshot target temp of 110F, turned off the burner and will just let it sit. Only needs to go for an hour per the random websites, and only 10 min per the manufacturer of the soap. Synthrapol plus soda ash. #stew #dyeing #flir

  14. #Dyeing with Acorns and Walnuts: From Forest to Fiber

"Natural dyeing with acorns and walnuts produces lovely tans, browns, grays, and blacks. Join me as I take you through the process. My property is filled with oak trees, so acorns are not hard for me to find. They are one of the first natural dyes I learned to extract.

"Walnuts produce a very similar dye to acorns, when pigment is extracted from the green outer hull. Both nuts create brown, with acorns leaning more tan, and walnuts leaning more red, in my experience. In this project, I combined acorns and walnuts, both leftover from previous dye pots. These nuts contain a lot of pigment! I used leftovers, but you can get beautiful results with freshly foraged nuts."

  15. taking advantage of waking up BEFORE EIGHT 🙃 by doing a ton of laundry while working on a #dye project I've been meaning to get to for a couple weeks now

I've been needing new sheets forever; Midna loves digging in the sheets with her little claws and now there's a BUNCH of tears and holes in the fabric. I've thought about mending them, but they're knit (T-shirt fabric) instead of woven, so I may just tear the sheets up for yarn or use them for another project, idk

BUT I bought two sets of pale purple (woven) sheets with the intention of dumping them into a #dyebath to make them dark purple. however, since they arrived, I've been reading a lot about #shibori, so I'm attempting some shibori-like dye resists

Midna is very interested in the damp bedding on the suddenly cleared off kitchen island, so bonus kitty photo!

  16. Hand-dyeing post 3 of 3: We still had some skeins left, so I blanched madder chips and dyed cotton in the blanching liquid (left, top); then made a dye bath (left, bottom).
Image 2 shows the difference between blanching liquid (orangey, left) and dye bath (red, right). Image 3 shows a closeup of madder on 4ply - I love this colour!

  17. I know I've been posting a lot about #yarn, #handspinning, and #dyeing #wool. It's #winter right now.

Rest assured I will turn back to #GardeningMastodon soon! It's almost time to sow #seeds!

And #lambing is coming up mid-March, too. So, I will be talking more about that as it gets closer. #SheepOfMastodon

  18. Works of (questionable) art:
    My big dyeing adventure

Dyeing two lots of linen today without a proper dye bath. Hello fiber reactive dyes (courtesy of @dharmatrading)!

I haven't had to create a database yet, but... I might be heading in that direction...

  20. Steven @drstevenwooding ·

Spent time carefully testing different mixes of dye to find the colour I wanted.

When I was ready with the shirt I found the dyes had a 'sludge' at the bottom and the bottle said:

    'SHAKE WELL before use’

    Important lessons:
    Personally:
    1) Read the instructions more carefully
    Professionally:
    2) Make sure your experiments are like the real world
    Reassuringly:
    3) I like most shades of purple…

  21. So my trouser leg I #dyed to cover up blood (now think might actually be ink) kinda failed.

In-person looks better but these have not been machine washed yet, so ya bet they will be super faded.

Believe it look this bad because A) the jeans to the eye are kinda dark anyways and B) I only used enough to dye 125g of fabric.

Disappointed and my day is ruined. My *character-full*? Jeans dyed much better.

“Japan is home the original #art of #braiding known as #kumihimo that got its start in the Asuka and Nara Periods (538-794CE) and continues to be in use to the present day. With the use of multicolored #threads, a single kumihimo cord takes quite some time to produce, yet it has never played a leading role in the world of traditional #handicrafts. Rather it served as an essential decoration, an accessory which has always served to add a splash of color to #Japanese culture.”
