Day 12 of my first Japan trip in 2006 was spent in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. I went to Kiyomizu-dera at 6:30 AM, then explored more temples including Kodaiji and Nanzenji, with cherry blossoms still going strong.

Temple staff rushing to serve Green Tea and Japanese Sweets at Hosenin Temple (宝泉院) in the beautiful Ōhara area of Northern Kyoto, Japan.
I had the camera placed on the floor beside where I sat, and while having tea and sweets myself, was able to snap this shot without anyone noticing - well, almost. 😅

In the last part of our visit to Takao, one hour north of Kyoto, we reach Kosan-ji Temple (sometimes also written as Kozan-ji). Wrapping up our visit there, we notice that (a) buses back to Kyoto aren’t that frequent and (b) we’ve gotten quite hungry from all the climbing - so we find a local restaurant with a nice view of the Kiyotaki River, and have a bowl of noodles 🍜

On my first Japan trip 18 years ago, I ran into this surprising scene at Ninenzaka along the hills of Higashiyama in Kyoto. Three women (likely tourists) in Maiko attire are passing a more contemporarily-dressed young couple. There are services allowing people to rent a full “package experience” including make-up and wearing kimono and traditional accessories.

A set of photos taken at a few traditional old townhouses (Machiya) in the Nakagyō Ward of Kyoto. During a “Kyotographie” photo festival a couple years back, these buildings served as venues for some smaller exhibitions. A typical Kyoto machiya is a long wooden home with narrow street frontage, stretching deep into the city block and often containing one or more small courtyard gardens.
