  1. Oooh, kickstarter for a new PNW wild dye book by a very cool dyer I have followed for several years. She does some beautiful and rare dye techniques-- purples and blues from lichens and fungus, dyes that change colour in sunlight, etc. (Book has a big ole ethics section, as you should expect with foraging and especially lichens.)

  2. Re: friendhole.social/@beandreams/

Finally got photographic evidence of Bombus californicus / California Bumblebee feeding in the great camas, just before the flowers finished for the year. Yay!

I think this is a male, because it is small and shaggy instead of huge and velvety like the one I saw before, but I do NOT know what i am talking about

  3. I think silk tassel bush (Garrya elliptica) is hard to photograph because at least this year the catkins are so plentiful they look more like grayish strings tossed on the shrubs. However, a close up of the male plant's catkins shows a profusion of anthers entangled with each other on a long chain of gray to pink flowers.

  4. #PacificRhododendron aka #CaliforniaRosebay, is native to coastal #PacificNorthwest areas, from California to British Columbia. It's the #StateFlower of #WashingtonState. They usually produce pink to peach coloured flowers.

It's found growing in the wilds of coastal forest areas. It's been cultivated into gardens here too. You can grow them from cuttings, taken from wild or ask for cuttings from local cultivated gardens.

  5. Hey folks! A friend of mine is seeing a black discoloration on thimbleberry leaves in their yard. It doesn't match any of the few things I know. Can anyone help? #plantpathogens #pnwnativeplants #nativeplants

  6. #CowParsnip is the ONLY #Heracleum species that's native to #NorthAmerica. There's many look-a-likes including the very toxic giant hogweed. I don't recommend trying to #forage & harvest them unless you're very experienced with identifying differences because it's dangerous to do so.
