@madgeface Are #textileArts typical women's work? No.
That change happened in 19th c with the industrialisation, when cheaper work was done in "home labor" by women and children. At that time, men took the better paid jobs, the ones with design, responsability, e.g. tailors. But before, it was different! ***
Therefore, modern women reclaim these arts. Watch #craftivism, or #collaborativeArt which is often very political.
Btw, most of our young learners for embroidery are ... boys! -
@madgeface For the #art: our museum and cultural heritage center organises two international festivals for #textileArts, a good mixture of quite serial craft and known artists.
I can tell you that our best artists have never seen an academy from inside! They are selfmade and learnt special skills from professional collegues. Some of the best embroiderers come from traditional-costumes making, the patchworkers or quilters from workshops with colleagues. Some were 60 when they started to learn. -

Oooh, kickstarter for a new PNW wild dye book by a very cool dyer I have followed for several years. She does some beautiful and rare dye techniques-- purples and blues from lichens and fungus, dyes that change colour in sunlight, etc. (Book has a big ole ethics section, as you should expect with foraging and especially lichens.)
