  1. Oooh, kickstarter for a new PNW wild dye book by a very cool dyer I have followed for several years. She does some beautiful and rare dye techniques-- purples and blues from lichens and fungus, dyes that change colour in sunlight, etc. (Book has a big ole ethics section, as you should expect with foraging and especially lichens.)

  2. 🧵 People often ask me, how they could test, if they like #stitching without having learnt #embroidery. I recommend #intuitiveStitching, it's like #doodles with a needle and you see quick success. If you like it, you then can start to learn simple stitches. Just be wild and play like a child!

  4. I just had a series of conversations where I learned Home Economics classes are apparently not a universal experience for my peers. I think maybe it's part of why I've had such a hard time living with folks, because I thought we all had the same education on basic life-skills, and I was the only one who gave enough of a rip to wash the dishes the right way.

I also didn't know it was considered regressive (when it was considered at all), as I thought it was part of an initiative to make sure folks knew how to do basic life-skills, regardless of gender.

This video definitely was educational for me:

  9. New to me and discovered via MetaFilter (what, y’all don’t read MetaFilter?): The Sampler Archive. From the front page: “The Sampler Archive database has been designed to share detailed information and high-resolution images of American girlhood samplers and pictorial embroideries from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.”

  10. Quilt top nearly done! The colours feel very seasonally appropriate, though I started it in May when they definitely weren’t. I’m calling this Exploding Pineapple Pizza (it’s a pineapple block pattern, & homage to #CBC ).

I’m always amazed that a bunch of frenetic blocks calm right down in a plain border.

I’m going to use an old bedsheet as filling, both bc #ZeroWaste & for spring/fall when the duvet is too much.

  12. I hated homework in #needlework at school. Now I have to #embroider my name until our International #Embroidery Festival. Our embroidery club displays a big board with the first names of all members. Almost all of them embroider traditional patterns in cross stitch. I have to be stubborn again and immortalise myself in #moss. The preparations for #stitching #moss. (order of steps in AltText) @embroidery #textileArts #FrenchKnots #inspiredByNature

  17. Book haul out of the Museum Shop #lenbachhaus . I'm still kind of mad at me & the German #feuilleton for missing their #RosemaryMayer exhibition last year. Or more exactly at me for still depending too much on legacy media for organising my cultural interests.
So I bought everything they had on Mayer in the shop.

  19. #introduction #introductions #reintroductions updated October 2024, sorry about all the hashtags.

Hi, I’m Deborah (Debbie, Deb). I live in #Melbourne, #Australia on Wurundjeri land. I am a white Gen X parent to 3 #cats and 2 #dogs. I am the #sysadmin at a plastics company; follow the saga at #SysadminLife (or mute if you’re just here for the pets).

    Interests: #TextileArts and #FiberArts, especially #quilting, #crochet, #embroidery; #VintageTech, #electronics, #maps, #WordPuzzles, #BoardGames, #sf; #songwriting, #music, especially #synthesizers; #pets. I am trаns but this account isn't about that.

I always CW these topics: alcohol, food, medical, politics, eye contact, racism, violence. I always describe images. I may add image descriptions to your posts so that I can boost them.
I have a long list of muted terms; thank you for using them consistently and CWing your posts. No flirting, please.

Racists, misogynists, ableists, queerphobes, antivaxxers, and sovcits can get lost. If you evangelize AI, cryptocurrency, open-source-above-all or tech owned by arseholes, I will say things that make you unhappy.

    I joined the Fediverse in 2018. I admin old.mermaid.town, operating since 2022.
