  1. Are you joining me for a paddle? #Dunster #Beach on Bank Holiday Monday. It's a long walk to the #sea when the #tide is out. These two car transporter ships, one anchored, use the Bristol Channel to visit Royal Portbury Docks. Wales is just visible the other side of the Channel.

Needed a long lens to capture the moment. Despite appearances, the beach area where I was sitting is very sandy.

  6. This awesome lady was named Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895). An Anglo-Irish writer, her famous hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful was partly inspired by walks around Grabbist Hill in Dunster, Somerset.

She also wrote Once in Royal David's City.

  8. #OnePlaceAdvent: hobby. A photo of #Dunster Association football team, winners of the junior league in 1908! Do you recognise anyone? It would be great if we could put names to faces

  12. #OnePlaceAdvent: grand house. This is Northanger, #Dunster, c1969. I haven’t yet researched this house or its historical inhabitants. It’s unusual to find a photo of a specific house, so I was pleased to find this one! #OnePlaceStudies

  13. #OnePlaceAdvent: healthcare. #Dunster had its own hospital which was open from 1867-1920. It didn’t just serve Dunster, but surrounding villages too. Read more about it here dunsterancestors.co.uk/dunster

  14. #OnePlaceAdvent: painting. Did you know that for several years, #Dunster was home to the artist Edward Bearne? His wife Catherine was an accomplished author. Below is a selection of Edward Bearne’s work. He painted in watercolours and oil, and exhibited at the Royal Academy on several occasions, winning the Turner medal. Bearne died in Dunster on 16 April 1913.

  15. #OnePlaceAdvent: winter tradition. Learn more about #Dunster’s celebration of this tradition in my blog post - The Burning of the Ashen Faggot dunsterancestors.co.uk/2021/12

  16. #OnePlaceAdvent: food…apples & cider! The word “wassail” is said to come from ‘Waes hael’, a Saxon expression meaning good health. Wassailers sing & make noise in orchards to scare away evil spirits & awaken the apple trees to ensure a plentiful harvest. Article is from 1938 #Dunster

  17. Throwback to visiting St George’s Church in #Dunster and seeing this amazing model church and information on the history of the church and St George #OnePlaceAdvent #OnePlaceStudies

  18. #OnePlaceAdvent: occupations. Flashback to some analysis I did on occupations in #Dunster in the 1841 census. I was interested to see how many female employees occupations were recorded. Most men were employed in agriculture & most employed women were servants #OnePlaceWednesday

  19. #AdventCalendar Day 3: water. As part of a scheme of improvements to #Dunster Castle made by (then) owner George Fownes Luttrell, in 1870 an underground reservoir was built which held 40,000 gallons (182,000 litres) of water #OnePlaceStudy #OnePlaceAdvent #OnePlaceWednesday

  20. Day 2 of the #OnePlaceStudy #AdventCalendar is landmark. I’ve chosen Conygar Tower. It was built as a folly to improve the view from #Dunster Castle but I didn’t know until I researched it for my blog that there were other features on the hill too dunsterancestors.co.uk/2021/01 #OnePlaceAdvent

  21. I’ve decided to do a #OnePlaceStudies #AdventCalendar - feel free to join in! Home: cottage on the top was my 3x great grandparents’ home, I was told it was the cottage below but 1910 Valuation Act & censuses proved otherwise. #OnePlaceAdvent #OnePlaceWednesday #Dunster

  25. West Street - Dunster. I went for a wander around Dunster in West Somerset early this morning. With Christmas and the bad weather it's been a couple of weeks since I've been able to do one of my early morning trips. Felt good to be out again with my camera in the nice quiet streets. #night #photography #nikon #d850 #dunster #somerset #somersetlife

    Dunster Castle.
“Dunster Castle is a former motte and bailey castle, now a country house, in the village of Dunster, Somerset, England. The castle lies on the top of a steep hill called the Tor, and has been fortified since the late Anglo-Saxon period.” (Wikipedia)
The Castle, now run by the National Trust, has dramatic vistas and subtropical gardens.
