SWANSEA: Two-thirds of your train journey to London has worse internet than the moon — where to sit to fix it
Anyone who has watched an email refuse to send somewhere past Port Talbot Parkway will not be surprised: for almost two-thirds of the train journey between Swansea and London, your mobile signal falls below the regulator’s minimum standard for usable internet.
The London–Swansea route ranks 18th of 24 UK rail journeys measured for mobile connectivity, according to analysis by business travel firm Good Business Travel — with what Ofcom defines as “good performance” for just 35% of the trip.
The analysis is based on Ofcom’s own connectivity-on-trains measurement study, which tested performance across all four major mobile networks.
And the firm found not a single UK train journey consistently meets the regulator’s 5Mbit/s benchmark for reliable internet.
Its most eye-catching claim: astronauts on the moon can achieve download speeds more than 100 times faster than that benchmark — making lunar internet comfortably quicker than anything available on a British train.
The worst route measured was Basingstoke to Coventry, with a reliable connection for just 6% of the journey, followed by Sheffield to Doncaster on 12% — around three minutes of usable signal.
Even the best performer, London Victoria to East Croydon, managed good performance for only 68% of the trip.
The Swansea line’s 35% puts it in the bottom third — behind London–Liverpool, London–Dover and London–Bristol, which topped the longer-distance routes at 43%.
With onboard wi-fi often patchy, most passengers fall back on mobile data — which is exactly what the study measured.
There are ways to improve your odds, according to the firm’s Natasha Inglis — starting with where you sit.
“Many people don’t realise that sitting on the side of the train facing nearby towns or major roads can improve your signal because you’re closer to mobile masts,” she said.
She also suggests switching your phone to 4G rather than letting it hunt for weak 5G signals, “which often makes connectivity even less reliable on moving trains”.
Satellite-enabled mobile services are beginning to roll out, she added, which could eventually cover the blackspots.
“Millions of people travel by train every week expecting to work, stream, message friends or simply stay connected,” she said. “Instead, they’re met with frozen video calls, emails that won’t send and endless buffering.”

SUMMER RAIL DISRUPTION: London trains from South and West Wales to take longer all summer as upgrade works begin
Rail passengers travelling from South and West Wales towards London face longer journeys for much of the summer, as a month of engineering works gets under way next week.
From Monday 6 July to Sunday 2 August — and again on the weekend of 8 and 9 August — trains between London Paddington and South Wales will be diverted, adding around 25 minutes to journey times.
Services will also run less often, with trains once an hour rather than more frequently while the work takes place.
The disruption affects anyone travelling the main line towards London from stations including Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Llanelli and Cardiff.
Great Western Railway and Network Rail say the works, between Swindon and Bristol Parkway, are needed to improve the long-term reliability of the route.
Network Rail will replace track and carry out structural work in Chipping Sodbury tunnel, alongside track renewals west of Swindon.
The companies say the investment will deliver a more resilient railway and help protect services against extreme weather in the future.
It follows a £23m upgrade to the overhead lines inside the Severn Tunnel, which Network Rail completed in early June after 16 days of works on the cross-border route.
No rail replacement buses are planned, and trains will continue to run throughout the works.
Some services will have altered stopping patterns to help keep trains moving along the route, GWR said.
To ease the disruption, extra trains will run between London Paddington and Swindon, giving passengers more options on that stretch.
GWR’s station manager for Swindon and Bristol Parkway, Marcus Deegan, said the work was an important investment in the route’s future.
“We know longer, less frequent journeys are an inconvenience in the short term, so we’re doing everything we can to help,” he said, urging passengers to plan ahead and check before they travel.
Michael Pinkerton, a portfolio manager at Network Rail, said teams would be working “day and night throughout the summer” to deliver the upgrades as efficiently as possible.
He said the work would make the railway more reliable for passengers “long into the future” while strengthening the route against extreme weather.
Passengers are being urged to allow extra time, especially for connections, and to reserve seats in advance where available. Free seat reservations are available.
GWR is encouraging travellers to check before they set off at gwr.com/upgrade and to sign up for journey alerts for real-time updates during the works.

I’m cautiously excited about this news. I’ve been using the Plymouth to London line for almost 20 years, and in that time it’s only gotten less reliable and more expensive.
So please, please let this result in better consistency, nicer trains, and generally better pricing.

FAIRIES LAND IN SWANSEA: Magical statue unveiled at station to bring Gower legend to life
The eye-catching installation, unveiled by Great Western Railway (GWR), brings to life the legendary Faeries of Pennard Castle — a haunting tale rooted deep in Gower folklore.
From Gower legend to city centre spectacle
The striking sculpture shows a winged faery perched among bright yellow flowers — a nod to the ancient story of how magical beings punished a cruel lord by burying his lands beneath sand dunes near Pennard.
Now, that legend has been transported from the windswept Gower coast straight into the heart of Swansea, as part of a wider campaign to get families exploring the stories behind the region.
GWR says the move is about turning everyday journeys into adventures — encouraging passengers to step off the train and discover the landscapes behind Wales’ most famous myths.
“Step into the stories”
The Swansea statue is part of a wider rollout linked to a new book, The Line to Legend Land, which retells traditional tales from across Wales and the South West.
A spokesperson for GWR said the aim is to “bring legends to life” and inspire a new generation to connect with the places around them.
And Swansea’s faery isn’t alone.
A giant red dragon has also appeared at Cardiff Central railway station — representing the iconic national symbol of Wales.

The installation could also prove a boost for the city centre, with the station acting as a gateway for visitors heading to Swansea and the Gower.
With its mix of local heritage, family appeal and Instagram-ready visuals, the statue is already drawing attention from passers-by and travellers alike.
More than just a statue
The campaign is also supporting a children’s charity founded by author Michael Morpurgo, with hundreds of books being distributed to schools across the rail network.
But for Swansea, the focus is firmly local — shining a spotlight on one of Gower’s most enduring legends and putting it right in front of thousands of commuters every day.
And if GWR gets its way, this could be just the start — with more people swapping routine journeys for myth-filled adventures across South Wales.
