404 Media: Study Finds A Third of New Websites are AI-Generated. “Researchers working with data from the Internet Archive have discovered that a third of websites created since 2022 are AI-generated. The team of researchers—which includes people from Stanford, the Imperial College London, and the Internet Archive—published their findings online in a paper titled ‘The Impact of AI-Generated […]

In about 30 years, it’ll be released—featuring an Indiana Jones fully reconstructed from 40 terabytes of archival footage.
The plot is peak recursion: an AI generates code for Harrison Ford's digital twin to battle a rogue algorithm in virtual pixelated jungles. Pure digital cyberpunk wrapped in a "cassette futurism" and Cold War aesthetic:
"Soviet scientists in a secret bunker under Magadan accidentally awakened an ancient Sumerian algorithm trapped within copper circuits. This proto-AI doesn't just want to conquer the world, it wants to rewrite history by purging everything chaotic and illogical... namely, the USSR."In the end, Indiana defeats the virus by simply pulling the plug. A digital silence falls over the world, while the 2056 audience pays for their tickets in crypto-yuan, fully aware that the film itself was created by the very AI the hero was fighting on screen.

I commute every day by #bicycle and I decided to buy a new #bike.
In the past I would have gone online and read some #reviews and comparisons and made a choice. Now that is nearly impossible, because so many of the "reviews" are #AI #LLM #slop summaries of, I dunno, forum posts about a completely different bike or something.
Instead I have e-mailed a list of my requirements to my #local #bikeshop and asked them what's available. Should have done that first.

Creators sammeln will.
Hier die Ankündigung im Video: https://youtu.be/GVO1Ng5bwMI?t=499

L'effrayante théorie de l'internet mort par Try

In the end I am dawning my bowler cap, sticking a cigar in my mouth and saying "I have a plan"... (old ass #Norwegians will get it).
#deadinternettheory is one thing, #artificalinteligence is another, and the #databrokerage problem - hoo boy.
It's time we start thinking inside the box, by creating a storm inside of a bottle, a hermetically sealed environment for people who don't want to be influenced by outsiders.
Until we meet again...

#DeadInternetTheory ?
How about #DynamicallyGeneratedInternetTheory ?What is the Dynamically Generated Internet Theory?
It's the idea that the the internet is not even dead and filled with bots anymore. No no, it's much worst. It's the idea that the internet renders right before your eyes.
Your search results didn't exist before you typed your search term. It's a mirage of websites pretending to already have been there. It's the internet equivalent of Last Thursdayism, but it's real and the time is measured in seconds or less. The internet you're seeing was created as you typed. The websites are being spawned into existence as you scroll your search results lower.
Think about the oddly specific articles that match your google search to the word. What are the chances someone even bothered to pre-generate an article like this? You click "more like this" on pinterest? Instead of making a request to the database of real works we will generate the results, complete with their authors and their portfolio.
You see some weird comment and try to check if it comes from a real person. Sure enough, the account was created 10 years ago and has a family, friends, likes, shares and everything an account should have. But it was all created when the website was loading. it will be wiped out of the existence at the next data migration or not, if you try to return to it before it gets wiped. You can talk to it, it will answer.
If a website beeps on the internet and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? No. It's only there when someone is looking at it.

“Dead Internet theory” comes to life with new AI-powered social media app
The theory says that most social Internet activity today is artificial and designed to #manipulate humans for #engagement.
#ai #deadinternettheory #socialmedia -
The internet, once a vibrant hub of human interaction and creativity, has become a shadow of its former self, largely due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its pervasive influence. This transformation has sparked a debate over the very essence of our digital lives, with some proposing that the internet is essentially “dead.” This theory, known as the “Dead Internet Theory,” posits that AI-powered bots have taken over, steering culture and content towards nefarious ends.
The theory gained traction from a 2021 thread on the Agora Roads Macintosh Cfa forum, which suggested that the internet died around 2016. It claimed that the US government was using AI to gaslight the global population. While the more outlandish claims remain speculative, the core idea resonates with many: the internet feels empty, devoid of genuine human interaction. Indeed, reports indicate that bots now account for over half of all web traffic, with malicious bots making up a significant portion.
The proliferation of AI-generated content has exacerbated this issue. AI now assists in writing a substantial portion of code on platforms like GitHub and generates a significant amount of content on social media. For instance, before Elon Musk’s takeover, an estimated 11-13% of Twitter accounts were bots, responsible for a disproportionate amount of content. YouTube engineers even coined the term “the inversion” to describe the point at which fake views would surpass real ones.
This AI takeover extends beyond social media. AI-generated poetry, films, podcasts, and news articles are now commonplace. The release of generative AI models like ChatGPT has only accelerated this trend, creating a deluge of synthetic media that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-created content. This has led to a scenario where the internet is flooded with lifeless digital content, making it challenging for genuine human creativity to thrive.
The implications of this shift are profound. The internet, once a tool for connecting people and fostering creativity, has become a battleground of bots and AI-generated content. This has not only diminished the quality of online interactions but also poses a significant epistemological threat. The sheer volume of AI-generated content makes it difficult for users to discern truth from falsehood, leading to a decline in trust in media and institutions.
This phenomenon is not limited to social media. AI-generated content can manipulate public opinion, disrupt financial markets, and even create non-consensual pornography. The Europol Innovation Lab has highlighted the potential for AI to be used in disinformation campaigns, influencing politics and elections, and contributing to fraud.
Efforts to regulate the creation and use of generative AI are lagging behind its rapid adoption. There is an urgent need for international cooperation and new privacy laws to address these challenges. The technology to identify bots and deep fakes must keep pace with their creation to preserve the integrity of the internet.
The internet’s transformation due to AI is reminiscent of the profound changes brought about by the advent of nuclear weapons. Both technologies have reshaped the world, tested without public consent, and concentrated power in the hands of a few. Just as nuclear weapons rendered certain previous technologies obsolete, generative AI threatens to obliterate genuine human interaction online.
In conclusion, while the internet may not be “dead” in the literal sense, it has undeniably changed for the worse. The rise of generative AI has poisoned the well of online content, making it less fun, creative, and connecting. Large-scale government regulation, though heavy-handed, may be necessary to combat the economic incentives driving this trend. As we stand on the precipice of this new digital age, it is crucial to heed these warnings and work towards preserving the essence of the internet that once brought us together.
