#android #FOSS folks, is there a gap in the automated #DataExport / #backup space?

I use #OpenTracks to track fitness activities (it's not quite the Google Fit replacement I was hoping it would be: See https://github.com/OpenTracksApp/OpenTracks/issues/1587) and #OsmAndMaps, and I use Nextcloud. However, backing up my cycling/walking/running tracks from OpenTracks and my bookmarks from OsmAnd to Nextcloud requires manual action.

If this is indeed a gap, I was thinking of putting up an open source recurring automated data export protocol for public comment.

1. Any data producing app (like OpenTracks) can include a small library that implements the protocol, allowing users to define the automated recurring data export frequency, how many old backups to keep etc.
2. Any data backup app (like Nextcloud) can include a different library that broadcasts an intent at a regular frequency that all protocol-compliant data producing apps can handle. When the broadcast is received, data producers can generate/hand over the file(s) to be backed up by the data backup app.

I'm tempted to build a #WebDAV-compliant open source app as well (as an example of a protocol-compliant data backup app) but that might be a grand undertaking.

You CAN export your data from platforms like Facebook. The missing part is the new social network implementing an importer that can parse that data and start rebuilding your network at your new digs.

Something the PixelFed folks around here are doing right is not ignoring that opportunity and building tools to bring your Instagram content over to their platform.

I guess it's because there's no kind of licensing option where users first have to agree that anything they post can be archived and republished at a later time by the Discord guild's founder. I guess an interim solution could be to have a bot automatically repost content tagged with a specific react emote, or anything pinned, to a private archive channel which would then be included in a periodic data export of the bot owner's account. Of course this still involves unnecessary gatekeeping, as the bot would need to be run by the guild's founder.

I remember being frustrated about this with the demise of #GooglePlus too; while it's nice to have an export of my own posts and comments, it also is incomplete; what made some of those posts actually valuable was the input from others, the discussions, the agreements and counterpoints.

I suspect this part of #DataLiberation is something that needs work across all platforms, including here on #Mastodon and in the extended #Fediverse. Allowing users to attach a license (likely a #CreativeCommons one) to their posts, so #DataExport options can also automatically include replies, or other relevant content contributed by community members on a third party platform, without potentially violating #DataPrivacy regulations such as the #GDPR.

(Which makes me wonder what the current state is of #TimBernersLee's #SOLID (https://solidproject.org/) project...)

You may have heard about the fact that you can't move your posts when you switch mastodon instances. In some (rare) cases you might even lose your posts and media altogether (https://cryptodon.lol/@lefteris/109371629076644756).

So please, please export your mastodon content on a weekly basis (choose "Preferences > Import and export > Data export").
