Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #dataliberation, aggregated by home.social.

  1. It's crazy — Facebook joined the Data Transfer Project in July 2018, and the best they can do is have you download your Twitter backup and then upload following.js to Threads to match usernames. www.threads.net/settings/fol... #NewThreads #DataLiberation

  3. Interested in #DigitalPreservation and #archiving? The @muckrock team is looking for volunteers for their #DataLiberation project.

"Since 2022, the Data Liberation Project — a volunteer effort led by data journalist Jeremy Singer-Vine — has used [Freedom of Information Act] laws and web scraping to make a wide range of government data sets public and usable.

Their efforts have helped newsrooms and the public keep an eye on [Transportation Security Administration] complaints, explore data on over 58,000 boating accidents and examine an expansive collection of hazardous material transportation reports."

  5. How to Import Instagram Posts into WordPress: Because I couldn't find any good tutorials when I was working on this, I wrote one! How I liberated my Instagram posts and imported them into my WordPress blog using Apify, ChatGPT, and WP All Import. buff.ly/4gx6H7X

  6. I recently bought a Kobo Libra 2 ereader to replace my beloved (and dead) Kindle Paperwhite.
After a rough start (wouldn't connect to the WiFi, website is a bit shit) its turning out to be a lovely device.
Now... are there any #dataLiberation tools I should know about. I want access to my stats damn it!

  7. First interesting finding of my #DataLiberation journey, is that the native #WordPress export has no general way to hook into the exported data per post.

You can filter almost every particular piece of data, that gets exported, but a simple do_action is missing in the age-old export_wp() function.

Has in 20 years nobody needed to add additional xml markup to the exported file?

  8. Data Liberation Chat

Automattic‘s @jordesign will host a #WordPress Hallway Hangout next Wednesday. This Zoom call will focus on the Data Liberation project: Migrating third-party platforms to WordPress, interoperability with page builders, and more.

  9. @boogah Agree! Four great posts around #WordPress‘ importers and exporters and maybe a very good place to start into the WordPress #DataLiberation

  10. @textfiles the "categorized as: uncategorized" at the end made me chuckle. 😅

#Discord already allows you to export your own data: support.discord.com/hc/en-us/a
But it looks like it will only contain your own messages: support.discord.com/hc/en-us/a
(Though I have yet to request my own archive...)
I guess it's because there's no kind of licensing option where users first have to agree that anything they post can be archived and republished at a later time by the Discord guild's founder. I guess an interim solution could be to have a bot automatically repost content tagged with a specific react emote, or anything pinned, to a private archive channel which would then be included in a periodic data export of the bot owner's account. Of course this still involves unnecessary gatekeeping, as the bot would need to be run by the guild's founder.

I remember being frustrated about this with the demise of #GooglePlus too; while it's nice to have an export of my own posts and comments, it also is incomplete; what made some of those posts actually valuable was the input from others, the discussions, the agreements and counterpoints.

I suspect this part of #DataLiberation is something that needs work across all platforms, including here on #Mastodon and in the extended #Fediverse. Allowing users to attach a license (likely a #CreativeCommons one) to their posts, so #DataExport options can also automatically include replies, or other relevant content contributed by community members on a third party platform, without potentially violating #DataPrivacy regulations such as the #GDPR.

(Which makes me wonder what the current state is of #TimBernersLee's #SOLID (solidproject.org/) project...)

  11. I'm interested in getting at the data on my #kindle
Not the DRMd books, but when and how much I read. I'm 99% sure my old paperwhite is recording this stuff and squirting it home when it come out of airline mode (where it lives).
Google isn't finding much, anybody here doing any #dataLiberation?

  12. Pff... that #Netflix #DataTakeout request is taking even more time than my #GooglePlus #DataLiberation request took during the worst of its time...

    No progress indication either.

Also, it can take up to 30 days? What are they doing? Sending a bunch of rats through a hex maze, looking for the cheese? Manually polishing every byte?

  13. Okay, so I got a rudimentary first version of #TootPortal working, which is yet another #ScratchYourOwnItches #PetProject.

It allows me to create a directory structure with simple #markdown files in it, which will be converted into #HTML, where each list item that refers to a toot URL (for now only Mastodon style URLs with numeric IDs are supported), gets expanded to the bare minimum content of that status, along with (optionally) any replies to it.

  14. The more I look at this old #GooglePlus #GoogleDataTakeout archive, the more I spot bugs/issues I missed during the #GooglePlusExodus period.
Of course nothing can be done about it anymore now, but it might be a warning for #DataLiberation of data from other #Google services.

Take for instance this #JSON file from my #GPlus Stream #GoogleTakeout archive: gist.github.com/FiXato/6edb8af
And compare it to the related archived post on #WayBackMachine: web.archive.org/web/2019030804

  15. So... by popular request Google added the ability to export posts made to public Google+ Communities you are a moderator or owner of.

However, apparently they decided that Comments should not be included in this archive.

Because, you know, interaction in a community is not important/relevant? 🤔 🤷‍♂️
