Sprouts Film Festival: Aquatic Short Stories
Framer Framed, Friday, August 21 at 08:00 PM GMT+2
On Friday 21 August, Framer Framed invites Sprouts Film Festival for a special evening of short films reflecting on the exhibition Wild Waters: Dams and Deltas After Modernity. Film screenings and conversations explore our relationship with water, aquatic histories and speculative fiction.Since 2022, the interdisciplinary Sprouts Film Festival has focused on fictional ecocinema and socially critical debut films. In a world increasingly marked by climate extremes and inhumane conflicts, it can be tempting to look away. Instead, Sprouts sees cinema as a space for peaceful protest. The festival’s film selection reflects its belief that the power of imagination can inspire change and push us to rethink our relationship with the more-than-human world. Sprouts aims to provoke curiosity, inform, inspire resistance and nurture emerging talents.
The first part of the programme consists of screenings of short films Beneath Which Rivers Flow and Last Night I Dreamed It Was Raining Fish. Following the second screening, moderator and artistic director of Sprouts Thomas Streekstra will be joined (online) by director Shraddha Khanna for a Q&A.
The second part consists of screenings of the short films Acid City and Wild Summon. This will be followed by a conversation between moderator Thomas Streekstra and interdisciplinary artist and artistic researcher Erik Peters. Their work The World’s Green is Rotting Lime, is an ecopoetic audiovisual installation that speculates on future ecologies emerging from plastic pollution. The work follows the discovery of a new parasitic flower morphospecies that has evolved to adapt to the infiltrating amounts of microplastics found in the earth’s layers.

FCA Book Club - Making Death and Life in Palestine: Social Reproduction in Settler Colonialism
NieuwLand, Sunday, September 27 at 06:00 PM GMT+2
In this collection of essays leading feminists come together to talk about social reproduction theory in relation to Palestine.
If the daily renewal of human life is essential to function in this capitalist world of ours, what happens and what does it mean for a person living under it, when the ambition of a settler coloniser power is to eradicate life, and undermine social reproduction in as many ways as possible?
Here, by examining historical and specific manifestations of Israel’s attacks on social reproduction in Palestine, as well as Palestinian life affirming resistance to these, the theory of social reproduction is reshaped and refined, capitalism and its inherent violence is critiqued, and we encounter another base of understanding aimed towards solidarity.🍉 Free Palestine 🍉
*The undisputable foundation of this discussion is the right of the Palestinian people to live in their homeland as free and equal citizens. It is not up for dispute that there is an ongoing genocide.
The text is 192 pages.
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able - a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends. To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website https://nieuwland.cc
We will be meeting upstairs which is not wheelchair accessible. If you have access needs regarding the event please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these.
The text is available as an (e)book on the website of its publisher, Pluto Press https://www.plutobooks.com/product/making-death-and-life-in-palestine/
The beautiful Het Fort van Sjakoo in Amsterdam is able to order the book for you. It’s good to place an order with them sooner rather than later, as the wholesaler is out of stock (but expecting to be restocked soon). Mention that the book is for a bookclub and you may be offered a discount https://sjakoo.nl/product/making-death-and-life-in-palestine/
In Utrecht the awesome Savannah Bay has said they can order the book and you can do this online, and it should take 1 - 2 weeks for the book to arrive ( but again could be longer depending on the wholesaler) https://www.savannahbay.nl/If you want to attend the session but find it difficult to get hold of the book we will try to help so reach out to us.
You can find ways to contact us at thefeministclub.nl, where you can also see our code of conduct. We aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher, please give the code of conduct a look to find out what behaviours we hope for in our sessions.
If there are topics or questions you would like to discuss please bring these with you. We lead a pretty structure-free discussion so rely on those attending to direct where we go.
We are looking forward to seeing and discussing with you!

Opening: Moving Love (Rescheduled)
Framer Framed, Sunday, July 19 at 06:00 PM GMT+2
On 19 July 2026 from 18:00 to 20:00, Framer Framed hosts the opening celebration of Moving Love, a film project and presentation by Impact Makers in collaboration with LIMBO and Skill School, for and by queer refugees. The film project and presentation aims to widen the focus of queer stories, which often centre on fear and precarity, by sharing accounts of hope in which love supersedes fear of consequence. In the making of Moving Love, Impact Makers brought together fifteen queer refugees from around the world for a series of workshops designed to familiarise participants with various aspects of film-making. Film functions as an effective means to convey dozens of messages, which can otherwise be difficult to encapsulate in words. Following the film-making workshops, ten participants created a short cinematic two-piece: ten unique, authentic works that range from powerful political statements to intimate love letters, each exploring identity and the strength to keep going.
By facilitating the creation of their own pieces, Impact Makers sought to place control over the creative process in the hands of participants, allowing them to reclaim the agency that they have so often been denied. Around the world, queer rights are increasingly under pressure with the rise of fascism. In 61 countries, being gay is still criminalised, and in 7, it is punishable by death. To counter a climate of fear and hostility, Moving Love fulfils a call for stories rooted in hope, connection and love.
The opening features a live performance by Samaa. Sign up here.

Marxisme School
NieuwLand, Sunday, July 19 at 12:00 PM GMT+2
In 1908, Alexandra Kollontai wrote about the main question that the women’s movement in Russia was facing: How do they ensure that women in Russia also benefit from the struggles of building a new political system? Even though the women’s movement has made a lot of strides since then, we see not just perpetuated inequality but continued violence toward women. Is it possible for woman to be truly free in this capitalist system? How do we work to improve the lives of people socialized as women and other oppressed genders, while acknowledging the need to pull out this broken system from the roots. Come to our study session to discuss the position of women in Dutch society and how the struggle for women is intimately linked with the struggle to change the whole system. IS movie night: "Harlan County, USA"
NieuwLand, Tuesday, July 28 at 07:30 PM GMT+2
What does class struggle look like in real life?
In 1973, Kentucky coal miners organized for union rights against the company that controlled their lives. The workers faced strikebreakers and armed intimidation on picket lines. But they also found extraordinary solidarity. Harlan County, U.S.A. reveals capitalism’s true face and what class struggle can win.
Every right workers have today was fought for. This film shows the fight.

Family Embodiment Practice: Book Kin, Home Arrival
Framer Framed, Saturday, July 11 at 03:30 PM GMT+2
On 11 July 2026, social artist Sun Chang hosts a ritual homecoming for Family Embodiment Practice, a queer-migrant art pedagogy shaped through six years of community research. Rooted in embodied practice, collective learning and more-than-human kinship, this ritual invites participants to explore how family can be felt, remembered and reimagined beyond the inherited forms. Through art, somatic practice, reading and imagination, the ritual asks how people connect with their bodies, ancestors, materials, places and each other.Family Embodiment Practice was developed through five monthly research rituals with 36 participants at Framer Framed between September 2025 and January 2026.
Drawing from queer and migrant perspectives, it shares lived communal wisdom and questions the frameworks that divide people into borders, classifications and racialised identities no one chooses. This afternoon, the space where the research rituals were held becomes a site of practice again. The Book Kin – Family Embodiment Practice: A Queer-Migrant Art Pedagogy for Becoming Kins – arrives home for the first time. And the Ritual Kin – a giant synthetic fabric that held the communal space of the research rituals – returns to Framer Framed.
Participants are invited into this practice of shared knowledge through a brief introduction of the research journey, movement, collective reading and sharing circle. Participants will breathe, move, draw, read, and listen together. Everyone who has ever longed to define family on their own terms, and everyone who did not know they were longing until now is warmly invited. Together, participants can explore ways to loosen inherited ideas of what family is supposed to be.
Come with whoever, human or more-than-human, you consider family. Please bring a mat if you wish to lie down during the ritual. Register here.
This event is in English. Admission is free.
The space is accessible for those using wheelchairs, strollers, or other mobility aids, with a lift available for those who cannot use the stairs. The ritual is held on a floor setting with cushions, but chairs are available if required.
Family Embodiment Practice is researched and designed by Sun Chang. Its research ritual, Family Embodiment Programme is developed in collaboration with Framer Framed. The ritual space holds co-creations made by 36 participants from the queer and migrant community: belit, Dani, Darya, Denden, Echo, Eddie, Effy, Emma, Enaam, Gaia, Hân, Isa, Jaadu, Jack, Jinxiao, Jiwon, Jiyoung, Jules, Kirti, Les Lie, Linus, Margo, Min, Minhong, Nardelly, Neo, Nikki, Nona, Qianyu, Ran, Sharon, Sonja, Sophia Wang Xue, Sophia Simensky, Sterre, and Sun.

Fundraising Voku for the Abbas Family in Gaza
NieuwLand, Friday, June 19 at 07:00 PM GMT+2
Leading to our upcoming 7.0. issue Between Bodies & Homes, we Soapbox, in collaboration with the radical leftist student collective tahyafalasteen_, are delighted to invite you to join us for a vegan fundraising community dinner in support of the Abbas family in Gaza. This event is a call for reflection on the contemporary mass dispossession of housings and “homes,” conditioned by all sorts of hegemony. With Gaza as our locus of attention, we stand in solidarity with the people under mass displacement and the grassroots movements in creating new forms of “homes.” The dinner will be followed by a screening of the film Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War (1971), where filmmakers Wakamatsu Koji and Adachi Masao follow the Japanese Red Army and the Palestine Liberation Front in Lebanon during their training. “Declaration of World War,” echoes Leila Khaled’s articulation that “all our struggles are one single struggle.” On that premise, Masao and Koji’s documentation examines how ‘home’ can be and become a space produced by shared ideologies of anti-colonial resistance. All profit from the dinner will be directed to the Abbas family, in order to help them evacuate to safety and cover urgent medical care for Sara, one of the family members who was injured in an airstrike. You can find more information about them at abbas_evacuateThe screening will be starting at 20.00. NieuwLand is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not. The nearest public spaces with larger toilets are Wereld Museum Amsterdam (open Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 17) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7)https://offbeat.amsterdam/event/fundraising-voku-for-the-abbas-family-in-gaza

Book Presentation: Open Archief 4.0 – A History that Never Arrived
Framer Framed, Sunday, June 21 at 03:00 PM GMT+2
Join on 21 June 2026 for the final publication launch of the Open Archief residency project with researcher Wassila Abboud, who’s joined by contributor Françoise Vergès.Developed through Open Archief 4.0, Abboud’s publication, A History that Never Arrived – Mediations on the Liminalities of Mahdi Amel, engages with the archive of Lebanese Marxist philosopher Mahdi Amel, exploring how revolutionary histories continue to shape political realities in the present.
Drawing on her research, Françoise Vergès reflects on the histories of communism and internationalist movements across the Global South during the 40’s to 80’s, tracing unexpected connections between anti-colonial struggles that emerged across different geographies. She also addresses how colonial techniques of governance, surveillance and social control were tested and developed in places such as her home of Réunion, and were later used within the French metropole, revealing the circulation of colonial power.
The conversation explores questions central to both Abboud and Verges’ work: how revolutionary and decolonial movements experience defeat and setback; how state repression, liberal integration and anti-communism shaped the trajectories of anti-colonial struggles; and what forms of domination continue to saturate our contemporary life. Vergès draws on her own familial history growing up in Réunion and Algeria, within a communist social context. Both Abboud and Verges think through what these unfinished struggles can teach us about the present.

Wassila Abboud devoted herself to transcribing, translating and reactivating the rare twenty-minute recording of the 1987 lecture Culture and Revolution الثقافة والثورة by the Lebanese Marxist philosopher Mahdi Amel. As part of the Open Archief residency project, Abboud uses this archival material, not as a reflection of a period in history but instead of a political condition (‘of permanent revolution’) that remains unresolved.Open Archief is made possible by the support of its founding members Beeld & Geluid and Nieuwe Instituut, as well as the ongoing support of the International Institute of Social History and Framer Framed. FCA Book Club - You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat
NieuwLand, Sunday, July 12 at 04:30 PM GMT+2
Our next read and discussion will be Zaina Arafat’s You Exist Too Much, first published in 2021.
From blurb:
Told in vignettes that flash between the US and the Middle East, Zaina Arafat’s powerful debut novel traces her protagonist’s progress from blushing teen to creative and confused adulthood. In Brooklyn, she moves into an apartment with her first serious girlfriend and tries to content herself with their comfortable relationship. Soon, her longings, so deeply hidden during her teenage years, explode out into reckless romantic encounters and obsessions with other people, which results in her seeking unconventional help to face her past traumas and current demons.
We'll meet on Sunday 12th July at 16:30, upstairs in NieuwLand. Unfortunately, upstairs is not wheelchair accessible. If you have access needs regarding the event please get in touch and we can see what is possible.
There will be a donation ‘jar’ for contributing to NieuwLand (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of these places, which exist as alternatives to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods. To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc).
The beautiful Het Fort van Sjakoo in Amsterdam has a copy listed as being in stock and is usually open to be contacted if you want to order something they do not have https://sjakoo.nl/product/you-exist-too-much-paperback/ In Utrecht, there’s the lovely Savannah Bay and their webshop. If you want to attend the session but are finding it difficult to get hold of the book, reach out and we will try to help - often people within our community have suggestions that help us avoid giving more pennies to giant companies.
Like the FCA more generally we aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher please read our code of conduct to find out what behaviours we hope for from you, and hold ourselves to in our sessions http://www.thefeministclub.nl/coc
We don’t have a fixed structure to our meetings and everybody who comes is encouraged to participate however they wish. If there are topics or questions you would like to discuss please bring those with you! We are looking forward to seeing you!

Book Launch and Workshop: Radical Quilting by Dyke March Amsterdam
Framer Framed, Thursday, June 4 at 06:00 PM GMT+2
Join us on 4 June 2026 for the launch of the book Radical Quilting, a collection of pieces on fiber arts, community work and activism, written by members of the Dyke March Amsterdam group together with other writers from the community. The evening includes a talk with some of the authors and a workshop in which participants collaboratively create a memory map of Amsterdam with needle and thread. In preparation for the Dyke March 2026, a group of volunteers – the ‘DIY Dykes’ – quilted a banner to carry during the march. For a couple of months, the group met once a week, working on their 30x30cm panel, using a decorative technique of their choice.
With so many people quilting, crocheting, knitting and sewing radically, why is it that fiber arts are still often tied to traditional gender roles? In the publication Radical Quilting, the authors show how to do fiber arts outside of heteronormativity and at different intersections. The quilting is radical: the 2024 Dyke March banner is a token of their dedication to the community and mutual aid in spite of gentrification, and above all, an example of their subversion of gendered expectations in fiber arts.
Sign up here. Feel free to bring your fiber work in progress along!
In the same space where the event takes place, Framer Framed is currently hosting the Threads of our Dutch Slavery Past project. Before the event, and every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, participants are welcome to join the creation of a tapestry bringing together stories, perspectives and histories. Sign up here to work on this project.

Book Fair: Notes to Other Futures
Framer Framed, Saturday, May 23 at 11:00 AM GMT+2
To celebrate the more-than-fifteen-year history of Framer Framed, and the launch of our new anniversary publication, we’re hosting a book fair!We view publishing as a means of sharing resources, thinking collectively and focusing on the accessibility of ideas as well as the final product. So for this book fair, we’re also hosting many collectives, artists, activists and independent publishers who contribute to a rich culture of subversive publishing and engage with urgent topics at the intersection of research, politics, art and culture.
Everyone is welcome; admission is free.
We invite friends, local residents, authors, designers, translators, artists, collectives, activists, and independent publishers to discover new books and connect with peers. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Framer Framed we take the opportunity to present a new publication: Notes to Other Futures: Fifteen Years of Framer Framed. This anthology explores the ongoing development of alternative practices at Framer Framed and the continuous engagement in radical pedagogy, community organising and collaborative exhibition-making – re-examining history from a multiplicity of perspectives.
In the last fifteen years, long-standing norms such as the autonomy of art, the neutrality of exhibition spaces, and the hegemony of Western art history have been increasingly questioned. This has been sparked by protest movements, shifts in academic discourse, and the amplified voices of communities long excluded from cultural institutions. In response, artistic and curatorial approaches have emerged that foreground relationality and re-examine history from a multiplicity of perspectives.
Notes to Other Futures (2026) reflects a commitment to work towards possible futures: ones imagined collectively, embedded in solidarity and open to transformation. It explores the ways of working, remembering, and acting that shape the continuous learning and becoming of a cultural organisation firmly rooted in society.
In the spirit of this approach, we’ve invited old friends, long-time collaborators, admired peers and future friends to share their own books and publishing practices. Throughout the day, you can visit the stands of each publisher, enjoy food and drinks provided by The Migrant Kitchen & Het Rode Keukentje, and join for the book presentation and anniversary party.
There will also be the chance to update your old T-shirts, jackets or bags with a screen-printing session! Drop off your choice of textile before 14:00 and choose one of four Framer Framed related designs. It is also possible to buy a plain tote bag to print. The printing is free, but donations are welcome.
This presentation is also a moment to thank all our collaborators and visitors for their support over the years. We hope to welcome you to Framer Framed again – or for the very first time – on Saturday 23 May 2026, 11:00-20:00.

Workshop: Breath & Breeze – by HumDrumPress
Framer Framed, Saturday, May 23 at 02:00 PM GMT+2
During the Framer Framed Book Fair, HumDrumPress hosts an Open Book, a public event which authors share, in a performative yet accessible manner, the knowledge they have gathered on their publication. Participants are then able to access, interact, add to, comment and critique, and feel invited into the collaborative publication process. For this Open Book, artist Mirjam Linschooten and researcher Skye Maule-O’Brien share their upcoming publication, Breath & Breeze: Tongueless Whispers of the Wind. This project looks at the wind, wind technology, and the Dutch colonial footprint in Barbados and Curaçao. Visitors of the book fair are invited to critically question the historical and cultural significance of wind in the Netherlands and the Caribbean. What can the wind expose about historical power relations and ongoing colonial structures?
Places are limited so please register for the Open Book here.
AboutMirjam Linschooten is a Dutch visual artist based in Amsterdam. Her multidisciplinary practice spans publication, film, installation, photography, collage, and writing. Often working collaboratively, she explores the visible and hidden legacies of colonial histories. By questioning how memory and history are shaped, her work offers alternative viewpoints, counter-narratives, and space for critical reflection. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including CBK Zuidoost (Amsterdam), Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (Leiden), De Appel (Amsterdam), Stroom Den Haag, Cemeti Institute for Art and Society (Yogyakarta), and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). She holds an MA from the Dutch Art Institute and a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
Skye Maule-O’Brien is an educator and artistic researcher working between Montreal, Barbados, and Rotterdam. Her collaborative practice combines theory, narrative, and sensory methods using the framework of intimate pedagogy; a theory and method she developed that centers intimacy and vulnerability in transformative knowledge production. She holds a PhD in Education from York University (Toronto) with an exchange at the University of the West Indies (Barbados), a Master’s in Educational Studies and a BFA in Art History with a minor in Adult Education from Concordia University (Montreal). She is a principal lecturer in the Theory Programme at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
HumDrum Press is a publishing project that experiments towards publishing as a commons. With homes in Rotterdam and Berlin, HumDrum produces collaboration-focused publications, hosts public gathering, and maintains a based publishing model.

Dyke March Book Club
NieuwLand, Sunday, June 7 at 04:00 PM GMT+2
In June the Dyke March Book Club will be reading All About Love by bell hooks!
The meeting will take place on Sunday 7 June, 16-18hr at NieuwLand (Pieter Nieuwlandstraat 93, 1093 XN Amsterdam). 🔗 Sign up here.
“All About Love offers radical new ways to think about love by showing its interconnectedness in our private and public lives. In eleven concise chapters, hooks explains how our everyday notions of what it means to give and receive love often fail us, and how these ideals are established in early childhood. She offers a rethinking of self-love (without narcissism) that will bring peace and compassion to our personal and professional lives, and asserts the place of love to end struggles between individuals, in communities, and among societies. Moving from the cultural to the intimate, hooks notes the ties between love and loss and challenges the prevailing notion that romantic love is the most important love of all.”
