Grackles are one of the earliest migrants to arrive, which means that there are tons of great Grackle photos with rain and wild weather. If this is a face that only a mother could love, I guess I am a mother now 😁 Grackles can undergo some of the more dramatic molts, with individuals sometimes losing their entire head feathers. This gives them a completely different appearance, and while I kind of pity them, I also deeply love these weirdly beautiful creatures.

Molting season is here, and many birds are shedding part of their feathers in various spots to grow new ones. They do this now because their skin gets exposed, and warm weather makes being partially naked a lot easier. I always love this part of the year because nobody molts in the same way and the textures and colors are pretty cool to see. Yes, those awkward holes are their ears!

#Babybird season has officially begun. Very early today, the #Grackles brought their first youngster to the pond to explore the water while they were looking for snacks. Sorry for the water stain on the lens but you get a bonus Oriole singing in the back.

With my setups, I don't get all the surprise visitors. Sometimes there are boring stretches but in those, there may be hidden gems like awesome portraits of the regulars. It is fun to identify different bird individuals. This year, there are several Grackles with white spots, but there is also one with missing head feathers, one with a weird eye that shall henceforth be known as Kermit, and all kinds of different shades. Long live Grack diversity!⁠

A nice big group of Gracks came over today, and it looks like the females are starting to arrive as well. They are a bit more slender and less vibrant. Grackles can appear in many shades, depending on the light, but usually, the ones I see here are mostly blue and green. Memories on social media can be helpful to see migration patterns and keep track of things. On Feb 21 last year, a Grackle showed up at the yard. It was a special one, one of the #CountGrackula family, marked by a while spot on the right side of the head. Well, guess who came by yesterday? Birds are remarkable. Welcome back! While I don’t like freezing, I believe that nature needs the four seasons to properly thrive, so I am very happy about the frosty temperatures we are currently getting. Traffic has been ramping up and the heated baths are working. There is one lone Grackle left. I am sure it will make it even if it stays all winter but this is a first.
