  1. TL;DR: I printed a small mount for using Continuity Camera with an Apple Studio Display. Because of course the best camera for the display is the phone already in your pocket, and of course mounting it neatly still needs another part.

This one is less repair and more “why is the expensive setup still slightly awkward?”. Very much on brand for Mac accessories.

    The problem

Continuity Camera is genuinely useful. The iPhone camera is usually much better than the webcam in a display, and macOS makes the software side surprisingly painless.

The physical side is the annoying bit. The phone needs to sit in the right place, not slide around, not look too ridiculous, and preferably not require buying yet another little Apple-adjacent accessory.

    The print

    Local file: ContinuityCameraMountStudioDisplay.3mf.

Printed on the Prusa Core One in PETG: 0.20 mm layer height, 0.4 mm nozzle, 15% infill, two perimeters, support material enabled.

PETG makes sense for something clipped to a display: a bit less brittle than PLA and less likely to get sad if the office gets warm.

    Result

Draft note to self: add which iPhone this was for, whether it works with a case, and whether the mount marks or grips the Studio Display cleanly.

If it works well, this is a good MacConsultant-style print: small, specific, and cheaper than turning a simple mounting problem into another shopping exercise.

Questions before publishing: which iPhone model/case? Does it hold the phone securely? Any photo of it on the Studio Display?

  2. “Import from iPhone or iPad” doesn’t work when any view contains a SwiftUI Toggle

This is a public reposting of FB14893699, in case it’s helpful to anyone else or especially in case someone else has seen this too and knows how to work around it.

If any view in the [active] window contains a Toggle - even one that’s disabled or hidden - then Continuity Camera (re. ImportFromDevicesCommands and importableFromServices) doesn’t work; all the submenu items under “Import from iPhone or iPad” are disabled.

I don’t know if this is truly specific to Toggle, that’s [...]

  3. PSA: If you install Microsoft Teams (at least on an Apple Silicon Mac) it tries to install an audio driver that prevents you from using your Continuity Camera (i.e., an iPhone or iPad) as a microphone. Make sure that you uncheck the Teams Audio driver in the installation…

  4. While we deal with major power outages in our area I'm working at wife’s office. Despite that…

    - I was able to plug into an open USB-C dock with display, mouse & keyboard and change the modifier keys in System Settings to work like an Apple keyboard.

    - The display had no webcam but I taped my phone to the monitor and was able to take Zoom calls because of #ContinuityCamera

    - And above all else, my work uses cloud-friendly apps and architecture. No VPN bullshit here. "It just works™”

  5. Just found some stick-on Magsafe rings on Amazon and designed a quick holder in preparation for AppleTV/Facetime Continuity camera thing. I tried mocking up something like this years ago by putting an iPad in front of the TV and setting it to Airplay to the TV, but it was pretty clunky.

Looking forward to this iteration. My only doubt is about the audio with the mic on the iPhone across the room.

  7. I love my Opal C1 camera, but I have it mounted as a #webcam, front & centre above my main display. #ContinuityCamera with the #iPhone is a nice addition, mounted off to the side, good for more informal occasional video. I wouldn't get a second camera for this role, let alone one as good as my iPhone, so this is a great extra capability to have.

  9. I must say, I’m pretty impressed with the Continuity Camera feature on #Ventura. Just FaceTimed with my mum by hanging my wallet case over the front of my monitor. So nice to not have to buy a separate webcam for my new office setup. #Apple's “It just works" slogan is sometimes a big fat lie, but in this case, it's absolutely true.

Too bad Mum didn't have her glasses on, so she didn’t notice the nice crisp picture. 🤣

  11. Has anyone discovered ways to interact with the new macOS Continuity Camera feature over existing CLI command or any undocumented APIs that could be used to select the telephoto lens instead of the default wide angle one?

Boosts appreciated if you have some kind Mac dev folks as followers.

I'd love to recommend folks skip the entire fancy webcam or even DSLR route in my remote comms guide (olivierlacan.com/posts/high-fi) but sadly CC only uses the wide angle lens.

  13. CW: iPhone "continuity camera" in Google Meet (and other browser-based apps / PWAs)

TIL that if you want apps like Google Meet to recognize your iPhone as a possible video source on your Mac (what Apple calls "continuity camera"), the phone has to be in what people have been calling – I kid you not – the "magic pose":

landscape, screen off, locked, motionless (not handheld), and unobstructed camera

This is apparently due to privacy concerns with unintended camera selection(?) (though I have no idea why this would necessarily be a more serious problem on the browser than anywhere else in the OS).

  15. Also if you use #ContinuityCamera, absolutely do not bother with Center Stage. It switches to using the wide angle camera for that and looks approximately as good (marginally better, at best) than the camera in the #StudioDisplay.

  17. Anyone on macOS Ventura getting Continuity camera notifications after waking up your machine? Every time I open the lid on my machine, I get an error about audio being disconnected.

  19. @samdeane yup, had it 3 times now. Seems like quite a big bug for the first stable release. However, #continuityCamera feature makes up for it 🫶🏻
