Bob has one of the tunes of his new album on YouTube. It's an old Lee Hammons tune called "Johnny Booger" which in German translates to "Peter Popel". 🤭

I just learned this deceptively simple, but in fact a bit crooked little tune myself with help of Bob's tab and now I see that he's using a different fingering. 🧐

Not a big deal as you need only one finger anyway to get that booger. 😂

Thank you for travelling with #Banjo today. And for cycling. The #BanjoFriday is on the road in #France. Attached to the saddle is a cheap chinese #minibanjo. Does it sound good? No way. Do I care? Not at all. It's nice to get some #clawhammer exercise on tour. The minibanjo is robust and cheap enough so I don't have to worry about damage.
Only its neck is too narrow for my hands.

A month ago I visited a glorious open air #Karaoke event in Cologne which will happen again tomorrow (May 23 2026, see link). One of the songs someone selected is a singalong classic that is extremely popular in German speaking countries. I felt inspired to adapt it for #clawhammer #banjo and here's the recording of the first time I managed to play through it without too many errors. (Still learning to play ...)

At 2:14 the tempo "picks up" and she switches to a different playing style: #Clawhammer. In clawhammer most strings are hit from above using the fingernail of the index or middle finger. (Nora uses her M-finger).

It's very nice to see this change to "downpicking" in the video.
This is not just a gimmick or to show off her mastery of different #banjo playing styles - it's musically motivated!

Jsou písničky, které se obvykle líbí. Mají něco. Nevím co. Něco. Jedna z nich je Knocking on Heaven's Door. A je jedno, která verze. Já mám rád tu od Petra Kalandry.

Snažím se tu skladbu vymyslet na svou #openback pětku, ale furt to není ono. A včera na mě vykouklo video od BanjoSkills a hle, je to tady! Přišlo mi to tak jednoduché a esenciální, už to skoro umím. A čím víc to hraju, tím mi to přijde jednodušší a míň zajímavé. Máte to také tak? S čímkoli? Že když se to něco naučíte, místo abyste si připadali jako king, říkáte si spíš: A to je všechno?

It's #BanjoFriday again. This week's banjoist is Rob Stenson, a "modern", higly virtuosic #clawhammer player who employs some unusual playing techniques.

In 2023 he released the "Gold Mountain EP" on YouTube and Bandcamp, produced by #Vulfmon/Jack Stratton.

The EP was recorded directly into a handheld recorder on the sidewalk of a road in Los Angeles - as a comment on Bandcamp says: "#Banjo in its natural habitat"

- I had dinner with a friend from graduate school whom I had not seen for a number of years. She asked what I was reading, so I showed her my copy of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "Americanah". It turns out she is reading it at the moment too! We're both enjoying it a lot.

- I was in a hurry so I stopped at Taco Cabana for lunch and ordered the steak taco combo. I was pleasantly surprised by both the tacos and the inclusion of chips and queso.

- I bought some Clawhammer peppermints partly because I wanted some mints and partly because I liked the design on the tin. I was pleased to see after my purchase that they are made in Canada. If you are in the USA, don't buy them from Amazon, because they are horribly overpriced there.

My incredible girlfriend started playing #banjo earlier this year, and she got good at it rather quickly!

She plays #clawhammer style, which is the more traditional sound of the #Appalachian region. It sounds gentler and more melodic than bluegrass.

@boninska Mám tu jednu #banjo verzi Gentle on My Mind hranou Mikem Iversonem stylem #clawhammer. Je to výrazně malebnější a hebčí, než s prstýnky. Ostatně Mika Iversona považuji za svého učitele, snažím se jeho aranže kopírovat a učím se podle něj, jak to jenom jde.

Poctivě se jí učím na své pětistrunné #banjo, hraju ji pomocí #clawhammer stylu. Blbě, ale zase ne tak moc. Ta písnička má pro mne neuvěřitelnej drajv, škoda, že ji nedokážu nafrázovat v originále. Zpívám tedy verzi od Michala Tučného, Toulavej song. Ten překlad je v pohodě.

So, I'd love to hear how you all did on your Pandemic Projects®... do you find yourself sticking with them?

For myself, at the start of the great quarantine I decided to learn to play #clawhammer style #banjo.

It took a good year of daily practice to get anything remotely pleasant sounding out of the banjo I bought, but these days I'm making some pretty lovely music on it, and I'm fairly obsessed.

I also learned to make real Belgian Liege Waffles. YUMMMM... so good.
