I always forget to do this BUT it’s #bandcampfriday - I am currently working on some new tracks after a few years off, but I would be delighted for you to check out some of my older work in the meantime. My most recent LP is from 2022 and it was very transitional, no pun intended. For today I’ve chosen to share my 2017 album, which was in a lot of ways the culmination of my previous 10 years of making music.

Artist: Slothrust (Leah, they/them, vocals/guitar)
Why?
Slothrust just released an EP, "Dystopian Cemetery," that is leading up to a new album that will be out September 18th. It's moody and angry indie rock with lyrics that give voice to the upsetting world we live in that is twisting us up.Where to start?
I've found myself returning to the title track, "Dystopian Cemetary," a lot. It speaks to me about what it means to refuse to stop living in a world that is dying.
"00101001" is a song about an infectious oppression between people that has a bridge sung in binary that then breaks...sung by a non-binary person.

Artist: Joe Stevens (he/him) and Coyote Grace
Why?
Because I'm in a melancholic, heartfelt, country mood, I'm listening to Mr. Joe Stevens and his band Coyote Grace today. Absolutely great country guitar skills and a voice that is melodic and soulful, it's that perfect folksy sound for lonely hearts and a melancholy world.Where to start?
"A Guy Named Joe" is a truly beautiful trans song about Joe's own experience of becoming homeless and having his world fall apart in transition, but waking up finally as the guy he truly is...a guy named Joe.
https://youtu.be/qzvCs7_xn6cThe song "Daughterson" is also a big ol' trans mood, with fiery fight to it.
https://youtu.be/4tpDV-ptJi0I really love pointing people to this live album too, because there are multiple queer country artists on it and great soulful country.

Artist: Rodeo Boys (Tiff Haney, lead vocals, they/them)
Why?
The Rodeo Boys sound like midwest Emo with a bit of country drawl and twang mixed in, and lyrics that frequently remind me of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. They describe their sound as "queer rock", and it hits me in the feels as a queer millennial who grew up in the midwest listening to the same kinds of radio stations as they all did.Where to start?
"All American Man" is a great intro to their sound. I remember watching them perform it on stage and finding myself feeling like a teen fangirl making heart eyes at Tiff, the lead singer.https://youtu.be/fCfs9HZ4Q_4?si=WxJ2wBweVmMuZuDU
I would be remiss to not mention they put on clown face for the "Feel the Same" music video...what can I say, I got a thing for clowns...
https://youtu.be/OoSHSWT8SeM?si=D1b7W4qgxPt1QurK
Lastly, one of my favorites of theirs is "Cowgirl in the Dark," which was inspired by Pamela Anderson, and not only the ways she was adored but also the ways she was mistreated by our society.

#TransMusicMonday ...on Wednesday
Artist: Ezra Furman
(2/2)
When I developed a temporary needle phobia and mental block to doing my HRT injection, the song "Lousy Connection" was how I broke through and took care of myself. There's a line "your world of blue lipstick and synringes," which was my "1, 2, 3, go" for completing my shot.
https://youtu.be/fvfI6Q5WFT0For anyone else who has experienced fluidity in their gender identity or expression, or just experiences ongoing shifts in their personality and sense of self in different ways, the song "Wobbly" captures the beauty and delight in such an experience. A celebration of feeling "wobbly" that makes me dance every time I listen to it.

#TransMusicMonday ...on a Wednesday (because ADHD/Depression, yay!)
(1/2)
Artist: Ezra Furman (Liz/Ezra, she/they)
Why?
When people ask me who my favorite musical artist is, I blather about not really having favorites per se and then inevitably admit it's probably Ezra Furman anyway. Liz, which is the name she goes by personally now, makes music that comes out of a punk ethos and edge, but fuses elements of everything from doo-wop to gospel to form her unique musical voice. They first connected with me as being one of the few other people I could find who was to some degree fluid in gender identity and expression, but was rooted in an unapologetic femininity with teeth. Since then, her music never stopped growing, exploring, and becoming ever more precious and close to my heart as a fellow trans woman.
I even had the privilege to meet her after a concert last year, and she is adorable and sweet as all get-out! I recognized an anxiety and neurodivergence that I know all too well, and I probably was a bit much with my fangirling (sorry if you ever read this Liz, as I know me and a bunch of my friends loving on you after a show may have been a bit much). Anywho, she's got a sincere heart that shines through in all her music.
Where to start?
A line from her song "Book of Our Names" is literally tattooed on my arm. Taking on an almost hymnal melody and tone, the song dreams of a time when all trans people are free and known, were we are "None of us ashes, all of us flames." These words circle a candle glowing with trans pride color flames on my arm, grounding me in the world I want for us.
https://ezrafurman.bandcamp.com/album/book-of-our-namesTheir song "Grand Mal" introduces some new uses of sampling and other electronic music elements, but the reason I love sharing the music video for it because you can see the beauty of her sheer euphoria and joy in becoming fully herself and embodying herself. The video is an ode to transfeminine joy in its visuals, and makes me smile whenever I watch it.

Artist: Zand (they/them)
Why?
Zand describes their music as "Ugly Pop," bringing agressive elements of industrial, hyperpop, hip-hop, and electronic while still being danceable with hooks and great beats. Thing is, if you hear a Zand song, you know it's a Zand song the moment it hits your ears in my experience, bringing something distinct and delicious through their voice and the texture of their beats and sounds.
Where to start?
There's a decent chance you already have! Zand created the opening theme to season 2 of Arcane (the animated series), "Cocktail Molotov." It is catchy upbeat, and a damn fine workout song.
https://youtu.be/CvgR2TFIHSc?si=uOZY_nAcgj-GmFQXAnother song I love is "Slut Money," which talks unapologetically about sex work, the fucked up way sex workers get treated, and the power of owning one's sex. Plus, there are not enough songs about supporting sex workers.
https://youtu.be/Wz7ZGaTgjwQ?si=iGbK8U0u3pRZ1h4bMy favorite song, and a bit of a personal empowerment anthem when I need it, is "DTF" - a celebration of one's own sexiness and the power we take in our pleasure. This is best encapsulated by the great line, "I'm not down to fuck, I'm just down to fuck me."

Artist: Mykki Blanco (they/them)
Song: I'm in a Mood
https://youtu.be/4ZgN5DXuWIk?si=naEatxNOfVl5PcZpWhy?
"I'm in a Mood" is the song I turn to when I too am in a damn mood and need to deal with my feels. Mykki brings that moody, brooding hip hop that really defines their self-titled 2016 album, "Mykki." Despite expressing being in a funk and ready to be mouthy and confront people on their shit, it helps me access a zen and calm through these feelings, and I find myself somewhere better by the end of the song. It also reassures us and supports us in being with our anger and facing a world that wants to use us as queer people while judging us all the same.In addition to what this song does, Mykki Blanco is a rap and hip-hop artist that deserves way more attention than they get. They are Black, trans, fluid in gender expression, and out about being HIV-positive. And while their style develops and experiments album to album, they always seem to connect with something deeply human and spiritual, while being unapologetically powerful.

That's right, I'm bringing it back!
For those that don't know, I started Trans Music Monday on my personal account several years ago with the purpose of helping people find out about all the brilliant trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse musical artists out there in the world. Others, like @VestigialLung have contributed to the hashtag regularly, and I hope many others will continue to promote their own music and the music of other trans artists on Mondays under #TransMusicMonday.
