  1. Musically COMPLETELY unrelated: Today the magic Magic Tuber Stringband relesed their new album "Heavy Water" on Thrill Jockey. The trio has not just one, but two #banjo players and here a third one as a guest, who is delegated to do tape loops on the album.

I love them, you will do so as well!

  6. Happy #Banjofriday to all!

A month ago I visited a glorious open air #Karaoke event in Cologne which will happen again tomorrow (May 23 2026, see link). One of the songs someone selected is a singalong classic that is extremely popular in German speaking countries. I felt inspired to adapt it for #clawhammer #banjo and here's the recording of the first time I managed to play through it without too many errors. (Still learning to play ...)

  23. Most banjos today have rims where the walls are drilled and have bracket shoes to hold the L-brackets that tension the skin, as you can see in this image of my cheap mini #banjo.

  28. Recently I became fascinated by a construction method for #Banjo rims that goes back to mid 19th century and is now known as the Ashborn rim.

It was named after instruments constructed by James Ashborn. His banjos were very modern and have an elegant design that somehow reminds me of furniture from the following "mid century", the 20th century.

The FRETS.COM Museum shows many details of an Ashborn banjo from 1852 - including the distinctive rim flange.

    > "When you want genuine music—music that will come right home to you like a bad quarter, suffuse your system like strychnine whisky, [...] ramify your whole constitution like the measles, and break out on your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose,—when you want all this, just smash your piano, and invoke the glory-beaming #banjo!"
