It is possible to fall into a huge #rabbithole when researching historical #banjo players from the 19th century. One of the most productive ones was Frank Buchanan Converse, sometimes called the "father of the banjo", which of course he was not. But he wrote many books and methods for playing the banjo, that are still relevant and fascinating today on #BanjoFriday

C’è una giornata in cui, in ogni angolo del pianeta, si sente riecheggiare una chitarra steel, si balla una line dance improvvisata e qualcuno si convince che i cowboy boots possano stare bene anche sotto un tailleur cittadino. È il 17 settembre, data che ogni anno ci regala

International Country Music Day

la festa internazionale dedicata alla musica country; agli amanti della musica country in tutto il mondo.

📅 Perché proprio il 17 settembre?

Il 17 settembre del 1923, nasceva Hank Williams, leggenda assoluta del country e voce che ha tracciato le strade polverose del genere. La sua musica ha reso immortali le storie di vita quotidiana, di amori travagliati e di sogni americani, tanto che oggi è celebrato come simbolo di questa ricorrenza. Quindi la data serve sia come memoria del suo contributo al genere, sia come occasione per celebrare l’intera storia della country music che – come genere – ha radici che affondano nei primi decenni del Novecento negli Stati Uniti.

📜 Da quando si celebra?

Qui le fonti un po’ si contraddicono (e un po’ bisogna prendere con le pinze), perché non ci sono documenti ufficiali universali che attestano la prima volta con certezza:

• Alcune fonti dicono che la giornata è stata istituita nel 2003 come un modo per “riunire musicisti e fan del country” a livello globale.
• Altre fonti più dubbie riportano che sia “dagli anni ’50” o “istituita negli anni ’50”, ma queste affermazioni non sembrano avere riscontri attendibili.
• Quindi il dato più credibile e ripetuto è 2003, anche se non è chiaro chi precisamente “ha deciso” questa data: non c’è un ente internazionale conosciuto (tipo UNESCO) che lo promuova ufficialmente.

🎶 Che cos’è esattamente

Il Country Music Day è una festa non ufficiale ma amatissima dagli appassionati. Non lo troverete segnato sul calendario accanto a Natale o Ferragosto, ma è entrato a pieno titolo tra quelle giornate che servono per condividere passioni comuni. L’idea comunque è nata con l’obiettivo di unire fan e musicisti in un’unica, grande celebrazione globale.

🌍 Dove si festeggia

Naturalmente la patria è l’America, dove il country è nato e continua a vivere tra Nashville, Texas e le infinite praterie del Midwest. Ma oggi la ricorrenza ha valicato oceani e confini: viene celebrata in Canada, Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Regno Unito e in diversi paesi europei. Persino in Italia non mancano radio, locali e piccoli festival che ogni anno organizzano serate a tema: cappelli da cowboy, balli di gruppo e tanto entusiasmo. E un grande “Grazie” a internet, Spotify, YouTube ecc., che si unisce alla festa…

🎤 Curiosità in salsa country

• Hank Williams, come dicevamo, è la “ragione” simbolica della data. Ha avuto un impatto enorme: molti lo considerano uno dei fondatori del “suono country” come lo conosciamo oggi.
• La musica country non è solo americana: esistono scene locali anche in Germania, Scandinavia e perfino in Giappone, dove i fan ballano il two-step con una disciplina invidiabile.
• In Australia, durante il Country Music Day, alcuni pub organizzano gare di ballo e premi per il miglior cappello da cowboy.
• In Italia circola l’idea che il country sia solo “musica da film western”: eppure, sempre più scuole di ballo propongono serate country che attirano centinaia di appassionati.
• La parte divertente? Non serve una fattoria per sentirsi country: bastano jeans, chitarra e la voglia di raccontare storie con tre accordi e tanta anima.

😄 Un pizzico di ironia / “country mood”

Immaginate: c’è un tizio in Italia che decide oggi, di mettere i cowboy boots, una camicia a quadri, accendere Spotify e ascoltare tre ore di Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash e qualche artista country italiano (sì, esistono!). Nel frattempo il vicino lo guarda, pensa “Ma che giorno è?”, e lui risponde “È International Country Music Day, vecchio!” – e magari il vicino scuote la testa ma poi canta “Ring of Fire” con lui.

E poi: è curioso come la musica country, con le sue storie di vita dura, amore perso, animali da fattoria e corpi che si lamentano per il lavoro sotto il sole, finisca con essere un genere tanto amato anche da chi non ha mai visto un trattore dal vivo. Ah, la magia delle corde, delle parole semplici e del cuore.

🤠 Un finale da rodeo

Il bello dell’International Country Music Day è che non importa se vivi a Nashville o a Milano: oggi è l’occasione per sentirti parte di un grande concerto globale. È la giornata che ci ricorda che, tra un banjo e un paio di stivali, non celebriamo solo un genere musicale, ma un modo di raccontare la vita.

Oggi 17 settembre, più degl’altri giorni, si ascolta country, si onorano gli artisti del genere, si balla, magari si impara a suonare la chitarra, il banjo, la steel guitar… o si va ad un concerto. È una celebrazione del genere country, del suo spirito narrativo, delle sue radici.

E allora alziamo il volume, battiamo le mani a tempo e facciamoci trascinare: perché, in fondo, il country ci insegna che ogni storia – anche la più semplice – merita la sua canzone. 🎶
