  27. Our monthly community game night went off without a hitch tonight. Our attendance was lower than normal because we have a lot of people who work in education who were working at various graduation ceremonies or were parents of kids who were graduating this evening.

Still, we had two new people attend and it sounded like they had a good time and will probably return.

I played the card game Collect!, Deep Sea Adventure, and Art Robbery. All were really fun.

  32. Starting a thread about some memorable moments in my favourite video game, Faeria. Only the initial posts will be long, because I'll first explain what it is, as it's quite unlike other card games you've probably experienced.

Faeria is a digital 1v1 strategy card game with a twist: the battlefield isn't fixed. Each turn, instead of just playing cards, you also build the "living" board by placing land tiles (Forests, Mountains, Lakes, Deserts and neutral hexes - a mechanic remotely similar to Magic: The Gathering) that expand your territory and unlock the cards in your hand.

The goal is to destroy your opponent's Orb on the far side of the board, which starts with 20 points of health. To do that, you summon creatures onto the living board, move them across the map, and fight through whatever your opponent has built in the way. Creatures can only be placed on lands that match their colour. So if you want to play a powerful forest creature, you first need to have grown enough forest tiles.

Besides the tiles (and cards and turn count), another important resource is the titular Faeria. Think of it as "energy" required to play cards. Each player gets 3 per turn and can harvest up to 4 per turn with creatures from Faeria Wells, which are resource nodes placed around the map. Gathering an additional 4 per turn is quite a challenge, though, as collection logistics are one of the core strategic decisions.

Each turn, you also get one action from the Power Wheel: you can place land (either one coloured tile or two neutral Prairie tiles), gain 1 extra Faeria, or draw an extra card. You must use it, but choosing wisely between those options is itself a strategic decision every single turn.

All this makes every game a spatial puzzle as much as a card game. Do you rush toward their Orb? Spread wide for late game combat? Contest the Faeria Wells to out-economy them?

It's fast (most games are ~10 minutes), beautiful, and full of moments where a clever land placement or perfectly timed card completely flips the game.

I've been playing for a while and have collected some moments - close-call wins, brutal losses, and the occasional "ayy lmao" - that I want to share here. Each post will have a screenshot and some context.

No Faeria knowledge needed to follow along - I'll explain in the ALT text what's happening each time (in an accessible way, as usual).

  39. So we won our first game of Eternal Decks by Hiroken from Tricktakers Games with amazing art by MUJUNSHA. We played 2-player, which feels harder than it would be at 3 or 4 players. We'll probably play stage A once more, before trying our hands at stage B. 😀👍 #boardgames #CardGames #cooperative
