🎉 Ah, the joy of securing your Brother printer with a Let's Encrypt certificate—because clearly, what every home printer truly needs is a fortress of cryptographic protection 🙄! Next up: teaching your toaster to use multi-factor authentication. 🍞🔐

Spent the morning, wasted time, on #BrotherPrinter software and firmware.
Consumer and small business IT, hardware and software, need to have a government backed, government enforced, guarrantee of #FitForPurpose.
The garbage that Brother plates up is a #BushmansBreakfast.

2/?
And then there are the #BrotherPrinter instructions.
Like, "When the driver install dialog box says to restart your computer, do NOT restart your computer...."And the looooooong "Submitting settings ... Please wait." Followed after 5 minutes with "Failed to connect".
And then instructions on how to manually connect the printer that is already manually connected.Next I try "Enter IP address". 🤮

Pro tip: If you have a Brother laser printer and it's not working on Linux over a network to print but scanning works, you may need to switch it from IPP over the IPP protocol to IPP over the DNSSD protocol.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a label printer for use from Linux? I'd like to connect with USB from my desktop Linux PC. Ideally, I'd prefer to not install any proprietary drivers and use all free software. Also, I think it'd be convenient to have it work independently from a computer, so having an included keyboard would be nice, I imagine.
I have a new small parts organizer that I hope to store a collection of resistors and capacitors, op-amps and other small electronics prototyping parts of different values. I would like to print labels for each drawer.
I'm looking at this one: https://www.brother-usa.com/products/ptd610bt
Anyone have any experience with this label printer from Brother with Linux or standalone?

Unexpected Project - replace batteries on printer toner cartridges?
Looks like Brother has gone over to the dark side and started blocking 3rd party cartridges. Sometime in the past, my B&W laser printer (MFC-L2710DW) did an automated update. Yesterday I powered down and moved the printer. Powering up generated the No Toner message. Internet sleuthing revealed that 1) Brother pushed the blocking update, 2) it's checked on a powerdown/up cycle, and 3) 3rd party cartridges have batteries (who knew?).
Current plan: swap batteries for new ones (LR 521 - arriving tomorrow). If that doesn't work, another fix is to buy a new cartridge, remove the tiny 'authentic' PCB from it, and insert that into the old ones. Use up all the toner from them, then use up the 'genuine.'

Printer help please:
If I buy a Brother Laser Printer that uses the 'Brother eco pro subscription' setup, then can I still use third party toner with it ?
Or is the service just some stealth DRM bullshit ?
