Figured out a hack for accidentally printing a unprintable/desktop layout in Filemaker. All the objects get hidden from print. At least this way I'm not wasting a couple of sheets of paper, just warming it up. Nothing to see here, just stick it back in the paper tray.

Buy a used office #copymachine on the 2nd hand market for maybe 300€. Add 100-150€ to rent a truck to get it to your home.

Those https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multifunction_Printer offer awesome features, reliability, stability, proper document loader, A3 size scanning and printing, color, ... and are very easy to maintain with astonishing cheap supply. A fresh load of toner lasts for 50.000 pages or so. Basically endlessly for a typical household.
Make sure to disconnect it from power supply when not needed as it is consuming too much IMO. I do it via Shelly Plug S + HomeAssistant integration.

Wow, thanks for the advice on the laser printers, folks! I've used Epson forever but for color inkjet printers. I knew HP was a bit shady and had no experience with Canon. I'd figured Brother would be a backbencher and had no idea they'd be so highly recommended! I can't remember when I've had that much unanimity on a tech question. XD

If the Feds wanted to trace the serial number of my printer back to me there's literally no records that would tie me to my printer. All those printer dots do is waste yellow toner. #Privacy

Hey, what inexpensive laser printer would folks recommend? I'm done with inkjet.
Don't need color. Don't really need the scanner either, usually scanning something with my phone is enough.
If I get into more photo scanning (which I might eventually) I'll do a separate scanner, not a multifunction.
I'm in the US, I'd prefer not to buy from Amazon (but not a dealbreaker).

My venerable DCP8065DN has been so dependable that it took me literal days to remember, yes, it has consumable parts and that might be why the prints look weird.
I now vaguely recall replacing the toner 12 years ago.
The onboard diagnostic estimates that the drum has 64% left.

Today I managed to get a current MacBook to print on a 10 year old HP printer. Why the fuss? HP’s “Easy Install” can not find the driver. Last week the same app had no trouble but I guess we’re used to unexplained failing in the realm of laserprinters. The “Easy Admin” then did manage to find the right driver. There must be parallel streams at HP, doing things, not doing others, separate and uncoordinated. #hp #laserprinter #grumble

If I buy a Brother Laser Printer that uses the 'Brother eco pro subscription' setup, then can I still use third party toner with it ?
Or is the service just some stealth DRM bullshit ?

It pains me to say but our old laser printer has finally reached the end of its life, it’s over 15yrs old and has become unreliable, had to use a nanopi to host a cups server as it’s not even supported on Mac etc. 15yrs feels like a fair lifetime.
Which brand of printer should we look at? I don’t want any of those stupid ink subscriptions?
