  1. Dutch government is planning to pay climate lawsuit penalties using the so called 'climate fund'.

It's an interesting finding by investigative journalists firstly since the climate fund is meant for investments to actually achieve the climate goals. Secondly since the government publicly denies it could face penalties for not achieving the goals, but government employees are actually fearing and preparing for them.

  2. Very cute pictures accompanied by a sad story: hedgehog rescue centers are overflowing this year in the Netherlands, and hedgehogs are weaker than other years. Not surprising: this year was a very bad year for insects, the main dish for hedgehogs.

Over the last 50 years the Dutch hedgehog population has decreased by 80%, just like the insect population. Putting more endemic species in your garden can help them.

And now the #eu learns that if you don't want to be dependent on party A, and achieve that by becoming fully dependent on party B instead... you succeed in your mission, but you somehow don't improve your overall situation.

  4. 1 in 5 European bee species threatened with extinction, according to new International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) report. Likewise butterflies are not doing great with 15% of European species threatening to go extinct.

Main reason: habitat loss due to intensive farming and pesticides.

Researchers warn that if the number of bees and butterflies go down even further, it might impact food production.

  5. The Netherlands lowers their goal of using less raw materials. The original idea was to use 50% less resources in 2030 compared to 2016. Now the plan is to use 15% less resources... in 2035.

Still the government thinks to be able to reach a full circular economy by 2050. The PBL, a government organization analyzing governmental plans, does not agree, especially since the plans lack concrete actions.

  6. Mix of 37 pesticides detected on Dutch island in nature reserve that is 7km from the shore. Up to 3/4 of the detected pesticides is coming from agriculture and has traveled to the island through evaporation or as droplets.

The finding is worrisome since cocktails of pesticides are linked to the disappearance of species, and this proves that pesticides cannot be contained to the area where they are applied.

  7. To those non-Americans thinking we can continue trade and political relations with the USA without getting caught in the shitstorm that is American politics right now:

The #usa is threatening with sanctions to UN members that will back the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) its plans to reduce ocean shipping's greenhouse gas emissions.

If we cut our losses and cut ties with the USA, we could be sovereign states again... just saying ;)

  8. Climate change makes fires in nature 40 times more likely in Spain and Portugal. One of the causes are intense heatwaves. Without climate change those would happen every 2500 years, with the current warming they happen every 13 years.

  9. There is a trend of lawlessness in the Netherlands where good laws are created, but the organizations enforcing them lack funds, manpower and the will to be effective... on purpose.

The story below is one of many: a piece of forest is illegally cleared and the enforcing organizations are condoning it, even when citizens ask for enforcement. Similarly many companies dump toxic waste with expired permits, polluting the environment.

  10. Every year at least 28.000 people die from deforestation. The actual numbers are probably higher since the study does not account for deaths due to the CO2 released by deforestation.

After China, Europe is the main driver for global trade that causes deforestation. In Europe, Dutch consumption is especially bad, causing more than 3 times the European average of deforestation in the past 12 years.

  12. Last year the global energy need rose with 2.2%, nearly double the rate as the average of the past 10 years of 1.3%. Reason? airconditioning!

Even the Netherlands are picking up with the trend having record airconditioning sales for this year and 2.2 million households owning one. We have a staggering amount of 2-8 days above 30C° every year.

Isolating the house, and adding sun protection outside also help relieve heat stress.

  13. Already looking forward to the Hollywood blockbuster coming out in 2 or 3 years about 'the guy' predicting the AI crash.

Unfortunately it will be an expensive one costing millions their job, house, pension and more. It also will have set us back years in climate action. Why? Because society including our leaders went all-in on this one, because they've mistaken a plausible sentence/image generator for the solution to everything.

  14. The #eu has a 'new' strategy to spend less money on climate change goals. The new 'competitiveness fund', part of the long term budget for 2028-2034, is meant for both industry and sustainability goals. However... it is not clearly specified how much should go to sustainability, leaving the door open to spend most of it on industry targets.

Let's see how prioritizing short term gains over having a planet to live on works out...

  15. The Netherlands have nearly halved their sea wind energy target for 2040. Instead of the planned 50GW they will now aim for 30GW. Now the Netherlands have 4.7GW of sea wind energy deployed.

The minister says it does not want to pay for investments that are not used, since the demand for renewable energy is low. Opponents, including the industry, think this will stop investments to convert to green energy.

  16. The European Union has presented its new accounting measures in the battle against climate change. Instead of actually having to reduce the last 3% of the emissions, member states may pay countries outside of the EU to do so in their name.

At the same time Emmanuel Macron wants to take the time to discuss the emission goals for 2040 in order to make them pliable for the competitive power of the #eu.

  17. Shell and BP want out if agreements with the Dutch government to make their operations more green.

Shell thinks the plans were not worked out enough. It also quotes increased costs, a bad market situation and delays on expanding the electrical infrastructure.

BP has emitted more instead of less CO2.

To reach the climate goals for 2030, industry needed to reduce 17Mtonnes of CO2. The agreements with Shell and BP accounted for 5.1Mtonnes.

A climate lawyer from Urgenda: "The fossil industry is cornered, fears that it cannot sell it's oil anymore, and is activating it's war fund to break down climate policies. These companies are grasping every last straw in order for them to earn as much money as possible in an, in practice, dying industry."

  19. Dutch parliament in favor of abandoning national CO2 tax for companies, but it will probably be the next government to decide on its future.

The change would bring the Netherlands even further from reaching its climate goals. Current 'ambitions' are already 16-24 mega tons behind on the goal. Abandoning the CO2 tax would set the target a few extra mega tons behind.

  20. So America bombed Iran, a country that did not pose an imminent threat to them. The orange potato immediately 'sort of' demanded peace. Unless those 6 bombs killed everyone in Iran, I think that's very unlikely. So there must be an escalation step to punish Iran for not accepting peace.

What will it be? More bombing? Setting an example? I'm getting a little sweaty knowing that this 'mastermind' has executive power over the nuclear arsenal.

  21. In the Netherlands the financial damage due to air #pollution was 50% higher in 2022 than in 2015, totaling to 4.5% (€43bn) of the gross domestic product.

Damages range from damage to buildings, to ecological impact and early deaths (8000/year!). Causes include things like #climatechange and particle matter pollution.

Biggest cause of damage is animal husbandry (€8.5bn), especially cows.
Second highest cause of damage is road traffic (€6.7bn).

  22. EU weakens goals for use of recycled plastic in new cars: in 10 years 25% of their plastic needs to be from recycled materials, as opposed to achieving that goal already in 6 years.

Interesting step to take when plastic recycle companies are already slowly going bankrupt due to not being able to compete with the old way of doing business. Luckily all other green policies are going great. /s

  23. A lot of countries seem to argue that an increase in military spending is the way to avoid a new world war (you know, the one ending all wars... this time since it will end us).

But maybe, just maybe, a bigger threat to world peace is the international community not capable of holding countries accountable for breaking international laws.

  24. CW: Profanity, climate change

"If we fuck with the ocean, the ocean will fuck with us"

Did you know? More than 75% of the plastic pollution in the ocean is caused by fishing? And 9% is from car tires?

    I didn't.

Also microplastics cause plankton to absorb less CO2.

As for protecting the ocean, we are far from the "30 by 30" goal. We only actually protect 3% of the ocean now, and in 5 years will have to protect 30%.

  25. In the Netherlands the amount of people worrying about #climatechange has never been so low since 2019.

    About young adults:
"They know it can have disastrous consequences, but they find it 'abstract' with 'still little tangible impact on their direct environment'..."

Their worries are instead focused on daily life and global conflicts.

At the same time more people are aware how their behavior impacts the climate, but don't know how to act.
