  1. @ShutterRatata great photo.#Robins (#Erithacus #rubecula, #Muscicapidae) are endearing to us, partly due to their short #flightdistance. Combined with their attractive #appearance, they evoke positive associations in us. Therefore, they e.g. play a role in #culturaltraditions (Christian legends). They have twice been #BirdoftheYear in Germany. In 1963, robins were the first animal, in which the presence of a #magneticsense (#orientation via Earth's #magneticfield) was proven. Text: S.F.Wirth

  3. @mybirdpins but where’s Australia’s favourite, the Tawny Frogmouth, as voted in last year’s #Birdlife and Guardian #BirdOfTheYear poll? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I scored 6/6 (100%) on the Common Birds of Australia (6) quiz at Bird Brainer! birdbrainer.app/

  5. The Australian Bird of the Year 2025 has been announced!

Congratulations to the Tawny Frogmouth! A beautiful bird and a well deserved winner.

There aren't many coins featuring the bird, one in fact - and it came out just this year - the 5c piece in the Aussie Bubs set from the Royal Australian Mint features a cartoonish representation of the bird. Pictured is the coin - courtesy en.numista.com/464491

  7. 6 hours left, Australia!! Vote Baudin's, because we need to shame the WA govt into protecting them from extinction. Protect Kwoolyilaak 💖

  9. @mybirdcards Galah and I voted for it today in the Australian #BirdOfTheYear poll. I also have them in the tree next door.

  10. Aw yeah, Southern Emu-Wren going strong in the Bird of the Year comp! Can you believe they want to build a rocket launch pad on some of the few remaining scraps of its habitat on the Eyre Peninsula? Madness.

  12. #BirdOfTheYear I can’t believe the Crested Pigeon is still there when loveable larrikin the Sulphur crested Cockatoo and the beautiful Rosellas are out ☹️

  13. Voting is open for the Australian #BirdOfTheYear. I'm taking it on a day-by-day basis, as we have too many great birds to pick only one.

Today I went with the whip-bird - these elusive yet ever-present little things can be commonly heard on forest fringes. Did you know the call is actually a two-parter? The male does the long query, and the female does the two-beat response! Love that for them.

Despit hearing them everywhere, I've only gotten to see one once - in the coastal heathland of the Royal NP.

  16. The Southern Emu-Wren made it to the second round of Bird of the Year and so it got my vote again! I was very tempted by the majestic Bin Chicken, though...

  20. Congratulations to the Kārearea for winning the 2025 New Zealand #BirdoftheYear competition!

  21. Shortlisting for Bird of the Year is *hard*. So many floofy friends and fun campaigns, and always the nagging suspicion I have been glamoured by the charismatic ones. #boty #BirdOfTheYear

  26. My cartoon in today's @sundaystartimes @thepostnz thepost.co.nz/nz-news/35010907

It's #BirdOfTheYear again and the alarm is sounding. The German climate diplomat said there's no room for new oil or gas exploration. Yet we know old Luxo has said he will allow new permits on his campaign trail...

  27. Very special bird today!

It's the endangered Swift Parrot ! (also Bird of the Year).

In fact, it's THREE endangered Swift Parrots.

I can also confirm, when they take flight, they are indeed swift. (someone over the road spooked all the birds and these guys were gone in a flash - it wasn't me that spooked them, I was lying on the wet ground).
