  1. @ShutterRatata great photo.#Robins (#Erithacus #rubecula, #Muscicapidae) are endearing to us, partly due to their short #flightdistance. Combined with their attractive #appearance, they evoke positive associations in us. Therefore, they e.g. play a role in #culturaltraditions (Christian legends). They have twice been #BirdoftheYear in Germany. In 1963, robins were the first animal, in which the presence of a #magneticsense (#orientation via Earth's #magneticfield) was proven. Text: S.F.Wirth

  5. The Australian Bird of the Year 2025 has been announced!

Congratulations to the Tawny Frogmouth! A beautiful bird and a well deserved winner.

There aren't many coins featuring the bird, one in fact - and it came out just this year - the 5c piece in the Aussie Bubs set from the Royal Australian Mint features a cartoonish representation of the bird. Pictured is the coin - courtesy en.numista.com/464491

And the bird, from the Guardian article where you can learn more about the contest and this year's short-listed birds: theguardian.com/environment/li

  7. Storm Petrels CAUSE storms and then fly THROUGH waves like cannon balls at a million miles an hour.

Why isn’t it bird of the year every year?

  8. CW: Controversial Bird Of The Year take

Remembering that time in 2021 the pekapeka tou-roa (long-tailed bat) won #BirdOfTheYear 🦇

Precedent has been set, mammals can do it. I hope to live to see the Tutumairekurai or popoto (Māui dolphin) win Bird of the Year. 🐬

  9. My cartoon in today's @sundaystartimes @thepostnz thepost.co.nz/nz-news/35010907

It's #BirdOfTheYear again and the alarm is sounding. The German climate diplomat said there's no room for new oil or gas exploration. Yet we know old Luxo has said he will allow new permits on his campaign trail...

  10. Very special bird today!

It's the endangered Swift Parrot ! (also Bird of the Year).

In fact, it's THREE endangered Swift Parrots.

I can also confirm, when they take flight, they are indeed swift. (someone over the road spooked all the birds and these guys were gone in a flash - it wasn't me that spooked them, I was lying on the wet ground).
