Bright and early this morning I popped onto @BBC5Live's Wake Up to Money programme to chat to @seanfarrington about Anthropic's new AI model Claude Fable 5, which launched last night 🎙️
Is it safe to use, since it's technically a Mythos-class AI model, and there have been lots of cybersecurity concerns?
Also, this is kind of a full-circle milestone moment for me, as over 3 years, from 2017 to 2020, I would be on early shifts with @bbcbusiness transcribing interviews with guests for the BBC Business Live Blog (until the blog was retired), and now I've appeared on the show. The relationship between, on the one hand, conspiracy theorists and these kinds of militia groups and, on the other hand, "the government," including when it's headed by Trump, is a little bit complicated. Still, this passage is a decent summary of the whole thing:
Although national media attention has moved on from the hurricane, VOP [Veterans on Patrol] appears to have adopted the belief that it was a military attack on domestic targets into their belief systems, and this may have intensified their anti-government posture, with Donald Trump and Republicans being portrayed as complicit in the events.
The day after Trump was re-elected, the main account posted that “the US Military is currently poisoning the skies of Western North Carolina after it has already destroyed this area with Weather Weapon Helene”.
The account claimed that “American children are dying from fentanyl pouring across the border, bioweapons jabbed in their arms, and the poisons being absorbed that come straight from the US military”, with the referenced “bioweapon” being the Covid-19 vaccine.
The account has repeatedly pointed to Trump’s role in producing the Covid-19 vaccine as a reason that he cannot be trusted.

And still today not much (threat-wise) has changed, though synthetic biology has been full steam ahead. The threats we imagine always take much longer to manifest than we expect, and more likely, never manifest at all. Such is the nature of "anticipatory" scientific & technical #intelligence.
