If you’ve been to beyond tellerrand before, you’ll know about the lovely Audio-Sketch-Notes that wonderful project where Tobi Lessnow sits on stage with his funky setup, records the speakers, and remixes his tracks live using speech samples from the talk that just happened. Tobi started this in 2013 for beyond tellerrand and it is part of it. A bit unusual, a bit unexpected and it adds to the overall energy that exists in the room.
The Tellerrandomizer is, in Sascha’s own words, the ”visual counterpart to that”.
During each talk, photos are taken and quotes are captured. Everything is then assembled in Kirby together with information about the speaker and the session. Afterwards, the result is shown as a presentation that is deliberately chaotic, visually loud, and full of personality.

  2. (1/4)
This is my (for now) last #btconf post, promise — or at least that’s the plan.

I just want to say a few more words about @marcthiele.

As a visitor of the #BeyondTellerrand, it becomes pretty obvious very quickly: you don’t do something like this to make money. Marc’s on a mission. With a surprising level of selflessness, he brings people together and gets them talking.

  3. "web joy" — the joy you experience when visiting a website with joyful content and/or have a joyful experience (as a user) on a website, or the joy of creating such a website.

During the beyond tellerand conference this past week, someone mentioned “responsive web design” and having just completed IndieWebCamp Düsseldorf, the thought popped in my head that joyful web design should be a named thing, since many of us spent the weekend at IndieWebCamp doing just that.

I mentioned it to @jamesg.blog at a break between talks, we discussed it a bit and agreed that joy is a good motivator, and as creatives we both like creating things that are joyful to experience, and ideally joyful to create.

James blogged it before I got around to it: https://jamesg.blog/2026/05/01/joyful-web-design

That and a zoom chat today was inspiration to name that specific joyful experience “web joy”.

It’s a nod to “moon joy”, a mere weeks old phrase many have heard and been inspired by, coined by Mission Control science officer Angela Garcia, and transmitted (spoken) by CAPCOM on shift, Jacki Mahaffey, in reply to the Artemis II astronauts on mission (as noted in a NASA AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/nasa/comments/1stjt7m/comment/ohw9g9l/). You can hear the “Copy, moon joy.” expression in context at the start of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHUvedAssyE

Much thanks to James for his encouragement to blog “web joy”.

  4. My small contribution to this year’s @btconf. During each talk, I collect photos and quotes, and the presentation is shown afterward. The design is driven by random values. In the background, there’s a pool of textures, graphics, svg masks, and fonts, with their styling controlled simply via php rand(). As simple as it is effective.

  10. Had great first two talks at the #beyondtellerrand

Especially the talk from Thorsten Jonas was quite good. Although in talked about sustainable web at #neoscon we could not mention it too often. #btconf

  11. Finally survived the Berlin traffic and arrived at the venue. Checked in and had the first coffee 🙃

The TYPO3 GmbH is also here so maybe I really meet old fellows :) #beyondtellerrand

  12. Next stop Berlin. Really looking forward to the upcoming #beyondtellerrand 🥳

  13. Painting With The Web - Matthias Ott @BeyondTellerrandConf Düsseldorf 2025

This talk and its overarching topic – what essentially is true "web design"? – is very dear to me.

We have to embrace the dance with the uncertainties"
    - Matthias Ott (paraphrased)

    youtu.be

I find myself caring less and less about the latest hot framework or ux design trend, but thinking more than ever about the foundations of well-crafted web sites: Leaness, performance, accessibility. Discoverability, URL-design, future-friendliness. Interoperability. Designing and building meaningful and helpful stuff that lasts.

  14. Everyday things that make you uncomfortable? Wait, shouldn't they be usable and make us feel comfortable. Well, surely Katerina Kamprani wants exactly this: make us think! But not only this, since her objects are going to put a smile on your face. Go and see yourself. beyondtellerrand.com/blog/spea

  15. Hints and Suggestions: The Design of Web Design - Miriam Suzanne @ beyond tellerrand Berlin 2024

The web is fundamentally different from other platforms, built around a radical political vision for resilience, adaptability, and user control. With that vision under threat, the Cascade takes on an almost absurd task – styling unknown content, with unknown collaborators, on an infinite and unknowable canvas, across browsers, languages, writing modes, and device interfaces.
This is a dive into the origins of the web, and CSS in particular – the design constraints, the range of strange proposals, and how we got where we are. By the end, we have a better understanding of the cascade, and see the ‘CSS is Awesome’ meme in a new light.
