  1. In case you want to re-watch the lovely opening titles of #btconf Düsseldorf 2026, created by @brendandawes (blog post coming!), you can do this in our YouTube channel: youtu.be/zGd6_t_Fqtk

  2. While I am on the road for #acs26 and doing post-event stuff for #btconf in parallel, I also started working on the videos. 🤪 Here is the first one with Kimya Gandhi and “The Act of Pressing a Key: The Journey of a Letterform on to Your Screen” youtu.be/jSBoXCsCyNI

  3. @btconf It’s really a challenge these days – especially with the community’s fragmentation… I’d say YouTube is where also the younger people are very active(ly watching). And they also use LinkedIn. Bluesky – is there a friends of #btconf starter pack? – and Mastodon for the (older? sorry!) more tech-savvy audience. And maybe something like Discord or reddit as well? But that would probably only work with a lot of engagement in various servers/channels… 🤔

  4. Nearly 60% of people who come to #btconf come by recommendation. That is wonderful! On the other hand I ask myself how and if I should get more visibility on any platform that addresses new attendees also. And which one these are?!

  5. While my social battery is still recharging from #btconf (it was amazing) I got inspired by watching the #2mr livestream to improve on my little Mastodon plugin for @getkirby. Version 2.0 is no longer just for showing replies but also boosts, favourites, and posting directly from the Panel:

  6. Updated the #btconf shop and added the latest numbers of past event t-shirts. All money goes into scholarship tickets. beyondtellerrand.com/shop

This is my (for now) last #btconf post, promise — or at least that’s the plan.

I just want to say a few more words about @marcthiele.

As a visitor of the #BeyondTellerrand, it becomes pretty obvious very quickly: you don’t do something like this to make money. Marc’s on a mission. With a surprising level of selflessness, he brings people together and gets them talking.

  8. "web joy" — the joy you experience when visiting a website with joyful content and/or have a joyful experience (as a user) on a website, or the joy of creating such a website.

During the beyond tellerand conference this past week, someone mentioned “responsive web design” and having just completed IndieWebCamp Düsseldorf, the thought popped in my head that joyful web design should be a named thing, since many of us spent the weekend at IndieWebCamp doing just that.

I mentioned it to @jamesg.blog at a break between talks, we discussed it a bit and agreed that joy is a good motivator, and as creatives we both like creating things that are joyful to experience, and ideally joyful to create.

James blogged it before I got around to it: https://jamesg.blog/2026/05/01/joyful-web-design

That and a zoom chat today was inspiration to name that specific joyful experience “web joy”.

It’s a nod to “moon joy”, a mere weeks old phrase many have heard and been inspired by, coined by Mission Control science officer Angela Garcia, and transmitted (spoken) by CAPCOM on shift, Jacki Mahaffey, in reply to the Artemis II astronauts on mission (as noted in a NASA AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/nasa/comments/1stjt7m/comment/ohw9g9l/). You can hear the “Copy, moon joy.” expression in context at the start of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHUvedAssyE

Much thanks to James for his encouragement to blog “web joy”.

  11. Attended this years #BTConf in Düsseldorf again and was so occupied listening to the talks, catching up with friends while also making new connections, that I forgot to post 😄 best conference and totally recommend it, as always.

    See you next year @beyondtellerrand!

  13. My small contribution to this year’s @btconf. During each talk, I collect photos and quotes, and the presentation is shown afterward. The design is driven by random values. In the background, there’s a pool of textures, graphics, svg masks, and fonts, with their styling controlled simply via php rand(). As simple as it is effective.

  18. #btconf talks recap of day 1: isellsoap.net/articles/btconf-
The hardest part was writing it on my phone while on the train home, instead of on a laptop. I know what I will bring with me next year. 😉 Day 2 recap following soon…

  20. Exhausted for today. Fueled with inspiration and curiosity for the weeks to come. Thanks to everyone who made #btconf a success (as always)! 😍

  21. Had to leave #btconf a bit earlier because of, well, life happening.

Thanks to @marcthiele for making @btconf this gem that it is and looking forward to meeting all these lovely people I've met in the last days again soon. I'm full of inspirations and ideas right now that I have to process first, somehow.

  22. What a journey – 8-year-old Matthias (aka Powerman⚡️) loved every bit of it! @Signalnoise showing at #btconf how early influences, side projects, and persistent curiosity ultimately shaped his bold, colorful creative identity. 💜

  24. Loved the practical, hands-on talk by @bramus at #btconf on the View Transitions API. #CSS and JS working together to make the web feel even more native and improve UX – that’s web design engineering at work. 👏☺️

  29. Great #indieweb sessions at #btconf #Berlin!

Yesterday, Sacha Judd (@sachajudd.com) reminded us to “teach someone …. something about building for the web”, and to “take back control of your feeds, your attention, and … go exploring again”. She encouraged us to “build healthy online neighborhoods”. That’s a great metaphor and very complementary to rebuilding your own home(page) on the web with perhaps a digital garden as well!

Today, Ana Rodrigues (@anarodrigu.es @ohhelloana.blog) connected the dots from Sacha’s reminders to encouraging everyone to join burgeoning healthy online neighborhoods like:
    * 32-Bit Cafe (@32bit.cafe and see their Discord & Discourse)
    * IndieWeb Community (@indieweb.org and see @chat.indieweb.org for Discord, IRC, Slack)

Both are filled with online neighbors helping and teaching each other how to make what people want to express on and for their personal sites!

Know of other healthy online neighborhoods? Let me know and I’ll add them to the IndieWeb communities page!

Want to connect your online home with online neighbors?

  30. Had great first two talks at the #beyondtellerrand

Especially the talk from Thorsten Jonas was quite good. Although in talked about sustainable web at #neoscon we could not mention it too often. #btconf

  31. It is happpening. The #indiewebcamp kicks off the #btconf Berlin week. For many years the #IWC is an important part of the whole experience. Happy building to @tantek.com, @jkphl and the 25 people at the event!

  32. Check our next #btconf Berlin talk: Our design decisions shape more than just products. They shape society. Thorsten Jonas explores how everyday choices can influence the future and how we can use them to drive positive impact.

  33. Painting With The Web - Matthias Ott @BeyondTellerrandConf Düsseldorf 2025

This talk and its overarching topic – what essentially is true "web design"? – is very dear to me.

We have to embrace the dance with the uncertainties"
    - Matthias Ott (paraphrased)

    youtu.be

I find myself caring less and less about the latest hot framework or ux design trend, but thinking more than ever about the foundations of well-crafted web sites: Leaness, performance, accessibility. Discoverability, URL-design, future-friendliness. Interoperability. Designing and building meaningful and helpful stuff that lasts.
