  5. This holiday-shortened week will be condensed further by my travel to Barcelona for MWC starting Friday afternoon. This will be my tenth in-person edition of the trade show formerly known as Mobile World Congress, but this trip will bring one first-time ingredient for me: I’m moderating a panel on information-security issues at the MWC setup of a new nonprofit tech-policy publication called Compiler.

2/13/2024: State of the Net conference features continued crosstalk about net neutrality, Light Reading

I’ve been meaning to write something about how often critics of the Federal Communications Commission’s move to revive net-neutrality regulations completely ignore the digital-privacy rationale advanced by FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel. And then one of my editors at this telecom trade pub said they could use some help covering this tech-policy event that I’ve attended on and off since 2006.

2/13/2024: GOP FCC Commissioner: Investigate Apple for Blocking Beeper Mini From iMessage, PCMag

I started writing about FCC commissioner Brendan Carr’s critique at State of the Net of Apple’s App Store stewardship, realized I wasn’t clear about what he meant in a couple of places, and e-mailed a query to his press contact. I thought I might get the usual on-background reply from staff, but instead Carr called me back a few hours later.

I had a day trip to Philadelphia Tuesday for Comcast’s Converge event and filed my recap of it the next afternoon after I’d had finished excavating the buried-lede aspect of the company’s presentation: In the few markets where it’s upgraded its cable network to deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds, Comcast’s service plans don’t have a data cap or equipment fees.

I was quicker than usual to write this, mainly because I’d already planned on taking off most of Friday to go skiing before I got an advance copy of this news from Google PR.

  9. Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has called for an investigation into Apple’s actions concerning the shutdown of Beeper Mini. Last December, Beeper announced an app that enabled iMessage functionality on Android devices, but Apple subsequently shut it down, leading Beeper to abandon the project.

Speaking at the State of the Net Conference, Carr expressed his concerns about Apple potentially violating FCC rules, particularly Part 14, which outlines requirements for advanced communications services. This section emphasizes accessibility for people with disabilities and prohibits network features that impede accessibility or usability.

Today, I called for the @FCC to investigate whether Apple violated our Part 14 rules by blocking Beeper Mini – an app that enabled interoperability between iOS & Android messaging.

    — Brendan Carr (@BrendanCarrFCC) February 12, 2024

Carr argued that Apple’s inclusion of green bubble SMS messages, which are distinct from iMessage’s blue bubbles, could create difficulties for individuals with low vision or visual impairments. He suggested that Apple’s practices, including the use of different colored bubbles, contribute to a broader set of practices that hinder competition within the industry.

While Carr’s remarks highlight potential violations, the FCC has yet to officially comment on the matter or confirm whether an investigation into Apple is underway. It remains unclear if Carr’s statements represent the official stance of the FCC or are made in his individual capacity.

This latest development adds to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Apple Beeper controversy. Previously, a bipartisan group of senators urged the Department of Justice to investigate whether Apple’s actions violated antitrust laws, underscoring the significance of the issue within regulatory circles.

  11. RIP Beeper Mini: iMessage on Android is now truly done

The last time Beeper Mini update was just before Christmas, the app was dead for all but the most committed users. The convoluted workaround involved an old jailbroken iPhone (permanently connected to Wi-Fi). Beeper has now “disabled the ability for users to start new iMessage connections from Beeper Cloud at this time.”

  19. The whole #beepermini matter could be resolved if iPhone owners in America used Telegram and WhatsApp.

The UX is the same across devices and they have *more features* than iMessage.

The excuse is often “I don’t want another app.” But you have 100 apps now. Why not 101? 🤦🏻‍♂️😔

  20. I just dropped my teenage son off at an activity and we had this conversation:

“How did you hear about this?”

    "We have a group chat.”

"How many people are on it?”

    "About 30.”

“Is it a blue bubble or green bubble chat?”

"It's blue. We don't let any Samsungs on it.”

I am partially to blame since I used to be 100% iMessage. 😞 But Apple has intentionally encouraged this bias.

I have since embraced Telegram and WhatsApp.

  23. Beeper is done fighting with Apple over iMessage for Android

This month cross-platform messaging app Beeper launched a new app called Beeper Mini that allowed Android users to tap into Apple’s iMessage service without a Mac or iOS device. It took Apple only a few days to roll out an update that stopped the app from working, prompting Beeper to roll out several new updates of its own in an attempt to keep Beeper Mini […]

  36. #BeeperMini is back, and they made some valid points and arguments. For one, I didn't know that you couldn't change the default chat app on an iPhone. Not only that, I did not know that, if you add an Android user to an existing encrypted chat app, iMessage will convert the entire group to an unencrypted SMS group.
