  4. Sota alkaa aina infrastruktuurin rakentamisesta

Keskustelu sodasta keskittyy yleensä johtajiin, kriiseihin ja ideologioihin. Harvemmin puhutaan infrastruktuurista, joka tekee sodista mahdollisia. Mutta onneksi on antropologi David Vine ja hänen kirjansa, kuten The United States of War.

  12. "Shameful" and scary to boot. Avoid flying into or out of Regan National Airport if you can!

Buried in the 3,000-page National Defense Authorization Act (NDDA) is a provision to open up military flight access in Washington DC's airspace with fewer tracking requirements. Specifically, the bill grants US Army helicopters nearly free rein in the airspace of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy blasted the provision "It's a safety whitewash," "If it sounds like I'm mad, I am mad. This is shameful."

This will roll back safety improvements that were recommended by the agency after the collision of a military Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, killing 67 people. npr.org/2025/12/10/nx-s1-56400 #NTSB #DCA #Safety #AirlineSafety #USArmy #NDAA #AviationSafety #Aircraft #WhiteWash

  13. Thankful for uneventful Thanksgiving travel

Another year of Thanksgiving travel is in the books, and this year’s edition of it somehow happened without any flight cancellations, interruptions or even delays. That feels like even more of a miracle than the phrase “no delays” might suggest, because 2025 has been such a snakebit year for air travel.

It started with the horrifying news of an almost 16-year streak of zero fatal crashes among U.S. airlines ending a few miles from my house, went on to feature months of meltdown-level disruptions among flights in and out of Newark that by summer had sent EWR to the bottom of my list of United hub airports, and then it left already-stressed air-traffic control employees working for more than a month without pay courtesy of the government shutdown.

But after all that, Wednesday’s JetBlue flight from National Airport to Boston arrived at the gate at BOS six minutes early, after which Saturday’s United nonstop from Boston to Dulles reached its gate exactly on time. Service was great on each flight, the WiFi worked fine, and even the planes were above average: a four-year-old Airbus A220 on the flight up, a renewed Boeing 737 with screens at every seat on the way home.

The experience feels even more like winning a lottery ticket considering some of the miserable Thanksgiving travel experiences I’ve had in the past. I’m thinking about when coming home for the holiday meant a long drive interrupted by Breezewood, Penn.; the subsequent years when a theoretically short drive to a suburb of Philadelphia could become a three-hour slog; most of all, the decade and change when the Thanksgiving journey either involved taking Amtrak and then two NJ Transit trains or spending four-plus hours on I-95 and the Jersey Turnpike that could easily stretch past six hours on the roads.

(It’s kind of crazy that I have hosted Thanksgiving dinner in my own abode only twice since leaving for college: Everybody visited us in 2019 for a change, and then the pandemic put a family reunion out of the question the next year.)

Now that my mother and my brother and his family all live in the same town just north of Boston, I just have to deal with spending money, not time. But as expensive as Thanksgiving flights can be, they beat the absurdity of driving 450 miles and change on the busiest travel weekend of the year. Bonus: The flights, even if I chance a connection, are so short that I can bring a container of frozen pumpkin puree in my carry-on luggage and not worry about that pie ingredient melting before I’ve reached family.

I’m thankful for having this part of holiday travel easier than it used to be. And I’m thankful, as ever, for everybody connected with the travel industry who worked this holiday so that the rest of us could travel for it.

  16. Every Thanksgiving, I make sure I wake up in time to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Not for the floats. Not for the lip syncing celebrity “performers”. I watch for the marching bands.

This comes as a shock to you, I know, that Kevin is so into marching bands that he would watch a televised holiday parade just for them. I especially enjoyed this year’s parade as groups like Fishers High School from Fishers, Indiana and Stoneman Douglas High School from Parkland, Florida, really outdid themselves.

Of course, my favorite marching units are the drum and bugle corps who show up now and again. As a long time performer and fan of the activity, I get literal chills when I see a drum corps coming into the frame in front of Macy’s, with enough sound output to drown out any of the TV presenters (sorry, Willard Scott, but that many G bugles blasting out Auld Lang Syne is going to make you invisible from an audio standpoint).

Speaking of G bugles, it’s appropriate that the first example I found of a drum corps in the Macy’s parade is a long time DCA and all-age staple, the New York Skyliners. This video is actually an audio only recording of the corps performing in their home concrete canyons, but it’s also fun to hear the voices of Lorne Greene and Betty White, who hosted the broadcast for NBC that year (1963? 1968? Both?). The audio isn’t the best quality, but that adds to the nostalgic feel of the recording.

The New York Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps performing in the 1963/1968 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades (audio only)

The next group of videos I found were from when DCI and the various regional drum corps organizations, such as DCE, DCM, and others, formed what was known as the Macy’s All Star Drum and Bugle Corps. These groups were made up of performers from various drum corps from all levels of the junior and all-age activity. The fun part of these groups is seeing all the different uniforms of the represented corps, as well as the humongous sound these corps put out (again, apologies to Willard Scott).

It wasn’t until the 2000s that I found the next example of Macy’s drum corps fun. This time, it’s the Cadets (pour some out), coming off their 2005 DCI world championship, performing one of their classics, Swing, Swing, Swing from the movie 1941, first performed by the Cadets during their 1995 show, An American Quintet

The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps performing in the 2005 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The most recent drum corps performance in the Macy’s parade was a big one. Coming off their 75th anniversary in 2013, the Madison Scouts put together an Anniversary Corps the following year for the parade. The corps was made up of members from the 2014 competitive corps (in white) as well as alumni from throughout their history (in green and red). The Scouts were also granted the honor to lead in Santa Claus to finish the parade, doing so with a rousing holiday mashup of Pharrell WilliamsHappy and Angels We Have Heard On High.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of two parades which are on my bucket list to perform in, the other being the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. If I could do those parades in a drum corps, it would be the best thing ever.
