C’est sans égal ! J’ai une admiration sans limite pour ce projet et cette œuvre. Le livre est réédité ! c’est 120€, c’est pas rien mais ça mérite. Avant cette réédition, on ne le trouvait pas, d’occase en bon état, à moins de 300€ – parce que personne ne se sépare de son ex., ce trésor !

Jean Renoir, Richard Avedon

Dans le numéro 9 d’Egoïste, paru en 1985, Richard Avedon a raconté à Nicole Wisniak sa rencontre avec Jean Renoir, alors installé à Beverly Hills, pour faire ce portrait. Voici son récit.

Renoir vivait à Beverly Hills, et j’ai été le voir. (…) Il était très malade à ce moment-là et il marchait avec difficulté, à l’aide d’un déambulateur. Il y avait quelque chose de très émouvant dans son visage, comme dans sa vie, son œuvre et ses convictions. Il était une des dernières personnes qui m’impressionnaient vraiment.

Quand la séance de travail fut terminée (…), Renoir me dit : « Voulez-vous vous joindre à nous ? » Je m’assis donc devant la table et quelques amis arrivèrent avec de la vodka et un gâteau du dimanche, et Renoir s’assit. (…) Il m’arriva alors ce qui m’arrive très souvent : je fus soudain pétrifié, je ne pouvais plus penser ni parler. Je ne me sentais pas à ma place. Je pensais : que pourrai-je dire qui enrichisse en quoi que ce soit ce qui se passe autour de cette table ? D’ailleurs, rien de particulier ne se passait ! Je trouvais que je réussissais assez bien à camoufler ce que je ressentais, et je savais que je n’étais nullement obligé de parler. Je pouvais, en toute tranquillité, rester silencieux. Mais, intérieurement, j’étais paralysé. Je souriais, essayant de faire croire que j’étais parfaitement à mon aise, tout en pensant : quel droit ai-je d’être assis à cette table ? Je suis venu pour faire une photographie, je devrais m’en aller ; je ne suis pas un ami des Renoir et c’est dimanche.

Renoir se leva pour aller aux toilettes et j’en profitais pour prendre congé de tout le monde. Mais, alors que je m’approchais de la porte, il sortit de sa chambre avec son déambulateur, me barrant la route. Je lui tendis la main en disant : « Monsieur Renoir, merci beaucoup de m’avoir permis de vous photographier. » Alors il me regarda droit dans les yeux et je n’oublierai jamais ses paroles : « Ce n’est pas ce qu’on dit qui compte ; ce sont les sentiments qui s’échangent au-dessus de la table. » Mon visage se figea.

Je marchai jusqu’à ma voiture et me mis à pleurer.

Note : ce récit était dispo sur une page de blog, qui n’existe plus. Je suis aller chercher l’archive dans les archives du net. C’est pour ça que j’ai voulu restituer ce texte. Il existe aussi un article de Libé, mais avec un récit incomplet.
