A previously unknown Renoir painting sells for €1.8 million at auction.
The work by French impressionist painter Auguste Renoir of his toddler son Jean sold for €1.8 million at a Paris auction on Tuesday.
The oil painting, ‘L’enfant et ses jouets - Gabrielle et le fils de l’artiste, Jean', had never been exhibited or sold before.
It belonged to Jean’s godmother, Jeanne Baudot, who passed the painting on to her inheritors.

Auguste Renoir, was a leading #French painter in the development of the #Impressionist style.
Renoir’s #paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated color, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid settings.
All subjects in this painting were known to the artist (apparently!) and the female playing with the dog would become Renoir’s wife.
I recall writing an analysis essay on this painting for a secondary school art exam. Just as millions throughout our world are captivated by this painting, I was too as a teenager.
It’s a gorgeous piece and it’s presently on display in ‘The Phillips Collection’ in Washington, D.C.
