  1. Alongside the Fedora 44 release, I’m happy to announce that we have sealed bootable container images ready for testing for the Fedora Atomic Desktops!

Sealed bootable container images include all the components needed to create a fully verified boot chain, from the firmware to the operating system composefs image. This relies on Secure Boot on UEFI systems.

More details at fedoramagazine.org/sealed-atom and github.com/travier/fedora-atom

  2. Fedora Linux 44 Beta is out and all the Atomic Desktops variants are ready for testing: fedoramagazine.org/announcing-

We have two important removals for this cycle:
    - Dropping FUSE2 libraries and thus support for AppImages that require them.
    - Dropping old polkit pkla rules support

Latest GNOME, KDE Plasma and Budgie releases are also ready.

  3. Fedora's elections are now open until Wednesday, 7th January!

I'm applying for a seat at FESCo [1] as I want to represent the interests of users, developers and maintainers of what we call Atomic, Bootable Container, Image Based or Immutable variants of Fedora (CoreOS, Atomic Desktops, IoT, bootc, etc.).

  8. How to choose the perfect #Linux #Distro for you

This guide may be a bit different from what you know. Linux offers a ton of choice, and there are some factors you might want to think of, rather than using #DistroWatch or #DistroChooser for a half-baked recommendation.

Dont hesitate to try them out! But for a longer investment, make a good decision!

  9. @[email protected] @[email protected]

Amazing! The #Fedora #COPR is one way to try it, even on #AtomicDesktops like #uBlue

Some things that come to my mind:
    - adjustable size
    - padding to left/right so it doesnt take up all the screen
    - nice show/hide functionality with a button, swiping, dynamically
    - functional keys (Ctrl, Alt, Super, Arrows, Fn keys, ...)

  10. I restored Discover to my Bazzite install using a Systemd-Sysext. Essentially a sub disk image that is loaded during boot of the immutable system, that way you dont have to layer all the plasma components this would usually require!

Neat! No shade to the devs

If people want instructions I guess I can write something up over the weekend

  11. I don't understand the excitement for the new frontend created for and .

It doesn't seem to do anything better than and looks extremely out of place on .

    I'm kind of confused

  12. What would it take for the Atomic Desktops to be the default option in Fedora?

I tried to answer that question in my talk at this year's Flock to Fedora conference.

  14. The wonderful folks from the french speaking Fedora community have just published an interview with yours truly where we talk about Fedora, Atomic Desktops, CoreOS and KDE.

It's in french and you can find it on linuxfr.org: linuxfr.org/news/20-ans-de-fed

  15. I've completely reworked how I build the sysexts for Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS and other image based Fedora systems.

We now have a pretty website listing them: extensions.fcos.fr

This is still an unofficial/experimental project but it has been working well for me for a while now.

Next step: writing a manager for all those sysexts to make installing/removing and updating them easier.

  16. I will be presenting at Flock to Fedora in Prague this June about the Fedora Atomic Desktops, the future plans and what would be needed before we can make them the default option.

If anyone is interested in sharing an hotel room with me to save on travel cost, feel free to reach out privately. I'll book the hotel soon.

  17. The Fedora 42 Atomic Desktops are out! You can find all the details in the Fedora magazine article: fedoramagazine.org/whats-new-f

We also have experimental bootable container images for Fedora Asahi Remix.

  18. I'll be at FOSDEM this weekend! I'll be giving a talk with Allison on composefs and how it fits well for image based systems: fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event

Feel free to reach out if you want to meet and chat about Fedora CoreOS, Atomic Desktops, sysexts, KDE or Flatpaks. I'll likely hang around the image-based, container or Rust dev rooms.

  19. Fedora 41 Beta has been released! 🎉
    fedoramagazine.org/announcing-

TL,DR: Hold on a bit before using bootupd on the Atomic Desktops and IoT.

We still have one major bug that will break systems upgrading from Fedora 40. The fix should land hopefully in tomorrow's update.

This only impacts updated systems and does not impact fresh Fedora 41 installations.

More details about bootupd support in: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes

  20. Manual action needed to resolve boot failure for Fedora Atomic Desktops and Fedora IoT.

Since the 39.20240617.0 and 40.20240617.0 updates for Atomic Desktops and the 40.20240617.0 update for IoT, systems with Secure Boot enabled may fail to boot if they have been installed before Fedora Linux 40.

  22. Just in time for the weekend, I've completed the initial work to create Live installation ISOs for Fedora Atomic Desktops!

This is using the Live ISO support in Kiwi.

  23. We're making progress on Fedora Atomic Desktops support for Fedora Asahi Remix!

Initial experimental images and instructions coming soon!

  24. Due to a bug in rpm-ostree, the '/etc/[g]shadow[-]' files in Fedora CoreOS, Fedora IoT and Fedora Atomic Desktops have the world-readable bit set.

To fix impacted systems immediately, run the following command as root:
    $ chmod --verbose 0000 /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow /etc/shadow- /etc/gshadow-

For more details, notably the full list of affected versions, see: github.com/coreos/rpm-ostree/s

  25. So I recently ran across this post and thread by @vwbusguy, and I would like to try to address some of the questions/misconceptions/etc that come up in the thread.

If you have questions, please, ask. What we do with isn't *identical* to what does with their , but many of the concepts for the end user are going to be similar/the same.

  26. Fedora 39 has been released! 🎉

I gave a talk with @me at the Fedora 39 release party about what's new and what's next for Fedora Atomic Desktops (Silverblue, Kinoite, Sericea and Onyx) and wrote the summary in this blog post: tim.siosm.fr/blog/2023/11/22/f
